Windows 10 update by mistake!

Anne Parker

Just thought I would let people know I updated my Windows 8.1 laptop to Windows 10 by mistake last night!

I thought I was restarting for a normal update but the next thing I know Windows 10 is installing!

Anyway my USB drive and MBX Dongle were still attached so I left them.  Luckily I had upgraded MBX and the Dongle a couple of months ago so when the system came back MBX ran first time - infact most everything did except for my Bullguard firewall.  I'm also left with the issue that I hadn't deactivated EQ7 so it now thinks I have two installs active!  I elected to go through the options at installation so I could set my own default programs and privacy settings from the start rather than letting Microsoft set them.

The firewall just needed a laptop restart to finish reinstalling itself and all was ok.  Windows switches it's own firewall on, and it seems on Windows 10 it is ok to have both Windows and a 3rd Party firewall active.

One thing I have found is that 'System Restore' had been switched off, so you may want to check if yours is turned on if it is something you would use to roll back if you install new software etc.

You can't stop an update being installed but you can uninstall an update causing problems, though it will reinstall the next time microsoft does it's updates - this reinstall can be stopped using a small program downloaded from microsoft - though I've not yet had occasion to download and use it.  If people want further details I'm happy to provide them so send me an email.

Hi Paul, I too had this dilemma earlier this year. I have the 15000 but was it was just far too heavy for me to take to a quilting class. At the time the Atelier (Skyline in the US)5 came out so this is what I bought. I loved the machine but it lacked certain features such a automatic foot up/down and 9mm feet. Then in October Janome brought out the Atelier (Skyline)7 so after only a few months of using the 5 I traded up to the 7. I have never regretted this, even though I lost money on the trade up deal, the 7 is a far superior machine and is more like the 12000/15000 without the embroidery of course. I love it nearly as much as my 15000

I have the new Skyline 7. It's 9 mm, has the Flex Accufeed, has most of the sewing features and programs of the 12000 sewing mode, including a resume function and saving favorite stitch settings. Best of all is that all the attachments are interchangeable with the 12000, except for the bobbin case. It doesn't have a low bobbin sensor. The machine weighs 24 lbs versus 30 lbs for the 12000 (without embroidery unit). It's as if Janome stripped out all the embroidery functions and repackaged the rest into a slightly smaller body (19" versus 22.6").

By comparison, the 4120 QDC weighs only 14 lbs, is 15" wide, but is 7 mm, doesn't have any "save" memory, and has a smaller bed space than the Skyline. I had the 4120 for nearly a year and took it to two retreats and a couple of classes. It sewed beautiful stitches, was easy to transport, and was overall a very good machine. The problem was me. I felt cramped by the bed space and got frustrated with having to reset "my" stitch settings every time I turned the machine on. My dealer gave me full price trade-in toward the Skyline, and I haven't had one regret for the additional cost because I'm much more productive and it's an easy mental adjustment going from one machine to the other.

The Skyline's more solid weight and larger bed space than the 4120 QDC have made me realize just how spoiled I've become with my 12000. You need to decide what features you "must" have or really need and then go and do some test driving at your dealer's store.

Minutes ago there was a blog post that explains how to get back your Windows 7 games:
Get Windows 7 games for Windows 10

I have not tried this, don't know if it works and make no guarantees. It's free!

I completely agree with Jane. The app answers questions for me all the time and when I haven't tried something for awhile it provides a much needed refresher for me.

Windows 10

Good Morning Jim,

I updated to Windows 10, purchase the Parallels latest - I know you prefer VMWare Fusion, but I've got to much invested in this other and "sort of" understand it a bit.

My question is:  Where do I find the drives, search and worst of all, I've lost my Spider Solitaire Game?  What's happened to all that stuff?  I really hate it when Microsoft does this to us.  I don't think I'm stupid, but MS sure does a good job of giving me doubts.

Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

Cheryl - Saskatoon

PS:  My update is on my USB waiting to be installed on my 15000 when I get home.  I can't drag my files untilI figure out that question I asked above.

Wondering whatever happened to Windows 9, Jim says:

Updating to Windows 10 does not remove anything other than Windows components, so if Spider Solitaire was exclusive to Windows 7 it may be gone. The rest of the things you are looking for can be found in the File Explorer, formerly Windows Explorer. It's on the START menu, and there's also an icon for it on the bottom of the screen. It works pretty much like the old Windows Explorer, and there is a search box in the top right corner of the window.

Microsoft has never focused much on the user experience. Take, for example, the debacle of removing the START button from Windows 8. They are still living under the arrogance of market share, even as they start emulating Apple by giving away the latest version of the OS. Apple has the advantage because they make every part of every product. Windows up to now must be all things to all computers, which leads to compromises. The latest iteration of the Surface may change that, since Microsoft has full control, but they will still have to support Dell, HP, Asus, Acer and all the other manufacturers in the pipeline. The Balmer years after Bill Gates left were not good for the company, and now that he's gone they have a lot of catching up and cleaning up to do.

Re: embroidering on puffy/quilted item?

HEATHER COWAN

Joyce..... When embroidering lettering if the satin stitch is too wide the machine can not stitch it.  The machine treats it like a jump stitch.  If you can narrow the letter's satin stitch width  to less than 11 mm for some machine and 9mm for others it may stitch out. Just my experience ..... Might be something else.   Jim or Dianne might have a better explanation for why this happens.

Joan Welsh <jlwelsh22@...>

Hi Julia, Thank you for getting back to me. My Horizon Link is actually version 1.00. It has not been updated to 1.20, so do I need to update that first? I'm really afraid of messing something up...especially since it says the machine and Horizon Link ned to be updated. I have no idea how to update my machine. Also - the Jamone website says Horizon Link 1.20 is comapatible with windows 8.0 / 8.1 - it doesn't mention windows 10. I actually ordered a new laptop with more space than I will ever need, but it has windows 10. I currently have windows 7. I dispise windows 8 (my husband has that on his computer). I also have a silhouette cameo cutter, and the silhouette studio software but again, I know very little about it when it comes to the computer. Thank you again for all of your help! Joan

Hi Jim, Have been trying for the last 2 hours to update my 15000. Have unzipped update, dragged crouching files to my designs ( all seems ok there) but when I get to the system update step and select "E" drive and then click copy I get a message saying 'Verup.inf is not found. I have tried with 3 different usb sticks, in different ports and still same message coming up. Jim please what am I doing wrong?? Yes I know it must be user error......help!

Hoping to avoid attack from crouching files, Jim says:
My best guess is that you did not drag the MC15000V2.10 folder out of the zip file and onto the desktop before attempting the update. If you try to run the update tool from the window that opens when you double click the zip file, only the update tool gets extracted from the zip, NOT the rest of the files. This results in a missing file message. Try dragging the entire MC15000V2.10 folder to your desktop, open it and double click the update tool there.

Re: Janome 15000 New Update - doesn't Install

Donna Morton

Deleting files from a usb stick may not be good enough for the update.  Our Janome Canada tech recommends doing a full format (as opposed to the “quick” option) using windows before installing the update on the usb stick.  He also recommends using the smallest usb stick possible.  2 gigabytes is preferred.

The EMB folders etc. should not be on the stick so after formatting with widows in your computer, do not put the stick in the machine to see if it will read it.  That automatically puts the folders on the stick

Re: Janome 15000 New Update - doesn't Install

Cheryl Paul

Good Morning, Aren’t we a lot? Various levels of computer knowledge and we still have problems. I just downloaded Window 10 on my MacBook Pro, purchased the latest update for Parallels to run it and the machine says “Windows 7” on the info bar at the top - “Help” tells me that Windows 10 is installed and the face did change. NOW I CAN”T FIND “My Computer” or “Computer” to see where my drives are to eject USB’s properly or to select other drives. Why do these guys have to give little old ladies these headaches? It is beyond me, but I’ll figure it out. Cheryl - Saskatoon

Finding My Computer right where I left it, Jim says:
If Parallels is like VMware, the "flavor" of Windows is embedded in the virtual machine file. If you started with a Windows 7 VM, then updated it to 10 via Microsoft Update, the virtual machine file won't know that you did that. Thus it will continue to report Windows 7 as the installed operating system. There is probably a place in Parallels settings for the VM that you can change to update the installed OS.

As for "My Computer", well it seems to have departed. Try clicking the START button, or whatever its called these days, then "File Explorer". There you will find "This PC" which is the new "My Computer". You can also eject USB drives using the "Safe Removal" tool in the bottom right corner of the screen. If you can't find it click the ^ icon to reveal hidden options and you'll see it. The icon is a USB plug with a green check mark on it.

design stitches

Charlotte Fields

Does the 15000 have a stitch size limitation like the older machines? I feel the need to make a kevlar shirt and embark is blocking at a low stitch number for the largest hoop. Charlotte

Hoping that embark is worse than embite, Jim says:
My less-than-reliable memory suggests that the stitch limit is 200,000 stitches. Unsure of who or what embark is, I have no idea why it's blocking (?) at a low stitch number.

Joan: I have Windows 10 since July and no issues at all with Horizon Link for my 12000. I previously was on version 8.1.   I have a lot of different software packages for sewing/embroidery/cutter on my computer and they all work fine with Windows 10. Be sure you have the space requirement for installing it and all should be fine.

Good luck.

Not to be accused of a corruption scandal, I was able to re-download and find those missing files!!

Re: Janome 15000 New Update Installed

Yes it was a corruption error msg. I will do as you suggest and see what happens. My update to my machine seemed to go ok and I have the 2.1 showing on my screen. do you think my update is fine on my machine?
I will report back. Thanks so much for your patience:)
