I'm not a quilter, and I'm not even capable of playing one on TV. Consulting with my resident expert of 49+ years I learned that monofilament is used when you don't want the quilting threads to show, such as quilts with widely varying colors that are impossible to match. It also serves to make the quilting the star of the show, when the stitches don't show. There is no problem having regular thread on the bottom with monofilament on top, or vice-versa.
