As one who wears knit wrist braces, using velcro "tabs" for most of it will make it infinitely easier to put on and take off with one hand. If the cast includes the base of your thumb, you could use stretchy material fashioned like a fingerless glove and use velcro tabs from the wrist down the rest of the cast. The trick might be figuring out the best placement for the tabs so your movements don't keep pulling them open. I've also seen people use a man's tube sock with finger and thumb holes at the toe as a cover.
