Are you just selecting the straight stitch from the Utility menu or have you tried the Piecing application? This uses stitches Q1 to Q3 and allows you to use them with the straight stitch plate which has an oval hole on the right to allow movement of the needle. I think it will be Q2 you want. Take a look at page 60 of the manual
