Brenda I think you thread through the whole the straw would go in ( but you should have removed it:) with the spool inside the cup, the lid on and the thread coming out the whole where the straw would be:)

A really great tip is to use a drinking cup with a screw on lid and a straw. Remove the straw and feed the thread through then place the spool in the cup and fasten down the lid. The tread draws through the hole beautifully and it helps to smooth the loops as the thread unwinds. Pick up the cups at the dollar store so they are inexpensive and best of all they are available in many sizes to accommodate many cone sizes.
