Hi - from the data of this attractive project I understood that the widest smapling rate by now is (2x) 960 kHz. Would a much wider range (say, 2 x 10 MHz, or so) possible with the USB 3.0 version?

No, it is impossible.
This device is used 100Mb core LAN9115 and USB3 to LAN converter in the same modification.
So maximum speed connection can not be excess of 100Mb
Table of required connections speed for one receiver.
48k - 4.5 Mb
192k - 11.3 Mb
240k - 13.6 Mb
480k - 24.9 Mb
960k - 47.5 Mb
As you can see, 2x960k nearest to theoretical limit of speed. This will work with LAN or USB connection if you will have enough powerful computer.
But for WiFi connection with LAN/WiFi version, maximum speed will be only 70 Mb. It can possible to use only 1x640k or 2 x 384k sample-rate maximum.
Why are there USB or WiFi/Lan versions of this device ?
1 - it is convenient
2 - it is increase the interferences from LAN connection. If you have planned to use simple antennas like Long Wire - you need to think about that. See included pic. Was used PA0RDT Mini Whip antenna near to tranceiver.
