Software

David Fainitski

ODYSSEY TRX works with extended N2ADR/HiQSDR protocol and has native compatibility with QUISK SDR program from James Ahlstrom. Starting with version 3.7.3 the sound codec support was added, but control of Automatic Keying parameters is not available yet. You can use Odyssey Key Master program to manage these parameters.

QUISK-VNA also works with ODYSSEY in VNA mode.

Zeus-Radio SDR program supports ODYSSEY since version 2.8.5 b50. Starting with version 2.9 it is done via simple HiQSDR support and also implements all functions including Automatic Key control.

ODYSSEY TRX utilizes openHPSDR protocol since 1.2 version of firmware and is now supported by various SDR programs.

All transceiver functions work in latest versions of PowerSDR MRX PS, except transmitter predistortion and multi-receiver mode.

Starting with virmware version 1.3.0 two independed receivers are present. Can use with PowerSDR MRX and CuSDR.

Also, can starting two windows of Zeus-Radio or QUISK in any combinations.

Wide Band Scope is work starting 1.2.1 firmware version.

ODYSSEY is also supported by variety of receive-only programs through ExtIO.dll developed by I2PHD for Hermes board. List of supported programs include HDSDR, SDR Sharper, Studio 1 and other.

Firmware

David Fainitski

ODYSSEY TRX uses fully opened firmware freely distributed under the GNU license.  N2ADR source code used as a base and a few additional modules were added. Hardware protocol remains compatible with N2ADR/HiQSDR, but it was expanded to support new functionality such as support of onboard sound codec and support of keying control. Version 1.2.0 supports openHPSDR protocol and also includes wide band scope. Both protocols exist simultaneously in one device.

Version history:

1.0.0 – 11.08.15 - First base version

1.1.0 – 11.09.15 - Added automatic key and expanded protocol to support key control that work with Odyssey Key Master

1.1.1 – 03.10.15 - A few bugs fixed:

- Incorrect work of PTT in straight key mode

- Incorrect work of the Demo mode

1.1.2 – 22.10.15 - PTT control signal is now straight, not inverted; control connector pinout was also changed

1.2.0 – 26.10.15 - openHPSDR protocol is supported

1.2.1 – 28.10.15 - openHPSDR protocol bug fixes, SNDP support has been removed

1.2.2 – 19.11.15 – was added stereo output in Headphones

1.3.0 – 6.12.15 -  was added the second independed receiver

Maximum sampling rate

DK8OK@...

Hi - from the data of this attractive project I understood that the widest smapling rate by now is (2x) 960 kHz. Would a much wider range (say, 2 x 10 MHz, or so) possible with the USB 3.0 version?

Re: Maximum sampling rate

David Fainitski

Hello, Nils.

No, it is impossible.
This device is used 100Mb core LAN9115 and USB3 to LAN converter in the same modification.
So maximum speed connection can not be excess of 100Mb

Table of required connections speed for one receiver.
48k - 4.5 Mb
192k - 11.3 Mb
240k - 13.6 Mb
480k - 24.9 Mb
960k - 47.5 Mb

As you can see, 2x960k nearest to theoretical limit of speed. This will work with LAN or USB connection if you will have  enough powerful computer.
But for WiFi connection with LAN/WiFi version, maximum speed will be only 70 Mb. It can possible to use only 1x640k or 2 x 384k sample-rate maximum.

Why are there USB or WiFi/Lan versions of this device ?
1 - it is convenient
2 - it is increase the interferences from LAN connection. If you have planned to use simple antennas like Long Wire - you need to think about that. See included pic. Was used PA0RDT Mini Whip antenna near to tranceiver.

Hallo, ROlin - thank you very much for your fast mail and explanation. Though the concpet looks very intersting for me, I fear the 960 kHz are two small for my monitoring purposes. Very sorry to say so ...

Hey,

I just wanted to tell you that I love your project and I've written a blog post about it:

Odyssey TRX - open-source SDR DDC/DUC transceiver

I hope it becomes successful, as at some point I would like to build a home-base transceiver around it.

Good luck with the Kickstarter campaign !

Thank you, Razvan !

ML052 - active magnet loop antenna test and compare.

David Fainitski

ML052 it's an analog of ML200 antenna.

I have tested It and compare with  the famouse Miniwhip PA0RDT active antenna.

I can conclude that ML052 works much better then Miniwhip from VLF to 40m band.

From 40m and above they work approximately equally.

See the screens...  Keep in mind  that my conditions for radio receiving are very bad.

I have prepared the image for ultracheap 4-core OrangePI PC http://ru.aliexpress.com/item/Orange-Pi-PC-linux-and-android-mini-PC-Beyond-Raspberry-Pi-2/32448079125.html

Was installed:

QUISK 4.04

hiqsdr-server

dspserver

openvpn server

openwebrx server

Download the image from https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzuiSb2tJSbzNWlmSzlwY2tOR2s/view?usp=sharing

For using, write this image to 4, 8, 16 GB SD-card with Win32DiskImager (under Windows).

Install this SD-card into OrangePI PC and run. Password "orangepi".

After the first starting, execute in Terminal:

sudo fs_resize

restart

All needed links are locating  on Desktop.

Duble ckick on "QUISK" for Quisk starting. The config file is located in the /home/orangepi .quisk_conf.py

For starting the ghpsdr-alex server, run "hiqsdr-server" and "dspsrever".  Config files for setting located in /home/orangepi, these are hiqsdr.cfg and dspserver.conf. You can use client's programms in your home network, as glSDR under Android or QTRadio under Windows or Linux  http://napan.ca/ghpsdr3/index.php/QtRadio_on_Windows

Connect to the IP of your OrangePI in your home network. Run ifconfig in terminal for information.

If you want to share server via internet, you need have a "white external IP". To obtain it, you need to use the VPN service, example leaderip.com. Put the obtaned config files ca.crt, client.conf, pass.txt  into /etc/openvpn. Run the "VPN_Start" from desktop. Run the "Chromium Web Browser" and look your IP with www.ipcheck.info, you need to see your "white IP". After that, your server will be visible in the server-list and everybody can use It via internet with client's programm.

You can also setup the private netvork connection (VPN) directly trough you PC and OrangePI,without "white IP", but in this case only you be able to use transceiver via internet.

Openwebrx server is allow to use the RTL-SDR dongle. The config file is exist in the /home/orangepi/Downloads/openwebrx  config_webrx.py  For using this server don't need a client's programm, just run http://your_ip_address:8073  in any web browser. Many users can use server via internet if OrangePI working with the "white IP". Read more about the project here sdr.hu

Good luck !

pc the wifi dongle for minniPC is here http://ru.aliexpress.com/item/Mini-150mbps-usb-WiFi-wireless-network-card-RTL-8188CUS-2-4GHz-802-11n-g-b-Comfast/32259725686.html
