Apparently there was often an extra Dg added to a train between Lake Grassmere and Picton, I thought Spring Creek too initially - how about Wharanui?

Sorry - I was thinking of the recent John Bates photo added by John Agnew not long ago - it was the station south of Dashwood Pass I was thinking of where such a thing might occur

There is only one Palmerston and that is in Otago. You are correct as to the location. Well done. Original attached. The rails on the left went to the goods shed at the south end of the yard west side of the main before it was relocated to its present position about 1980.
