Dear Sir

I plan to make an extension on web browsers for this.
Yes, it is for sighted persons, who want to have an overview of the webpage. Especially for persons with low vision who have tunnel vision.

If you could give me some insights.

Thanks and regards

NVDA is open source, you're very welcome to obtain the code and read through it for yourself. I'm not sure how much it will help; NVDA is written in Python and browser extensions are not.

Re: Can we reclass an unknown object?

As far as I can see we don't have the listbox as a controltype in NVDA.
Did you try to reclass (changing the role) it to a list and listitem?

I have a check list (a list box with check boxes on each list item) which is a custom control. Is there a way to tell NVDA to treat this like a list box? If not, any help on how I should tackle this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Alberto
Did you try the native method first?

obj.IAccessibleObject.accSelect

Check for the bitness as well, I think 32-bit should work as outlined before.
However, make sure to use the right LVITEM for 64-bit.

Cheers

In the meantime, you can view the 2018.4 API docs located on my website at:

Although it is not that recent, it is quite comparable to current API set we’ve got.

Hi,

Regarding API docs, that’s something I agree. At the moment, after introduction of abstract methods and some more recent commits in 2019.1 development cycle, it isn’t possible to build API docs from source code, something NV Access people were notified.

As for discussing this, I think this list would be fine.

Hi again,

I read the addons developer guide for 19.1.1 and the design/internals documents for NVDA itself. I know Python well enough to build things. However, the lack of an NVDA API reference guide gets new addon developers stuck. The developer guides are good enough to get people started with simple things, but once someone gets past that, there is no more guidance. We need to come up with something other than experimenting around with API calls because it is a large waste of time to a point. I would like to continue talking about this problem. Where should we continue?

Hi,

Typically, I and others recommend people to learn Python first, but since some did learn Python and are proficient at it, we usually recommend reading the NVDA development guide, and the add-on development guide for certain tasks not covered in the NVDA dev guide.

I do realize that this is the same answer you may have received on add-ons list, which demonstrates that we may need to think critically about the current state of API documentation and surrounding literature.

Is there an up-to-date API reference guide for addon developers? It is difficult knowing what to use and where if there isn’t a developer’s guide out there. The guide should have documentation and sample usage for all classes, methods, attributes, and properties in the NVDA API. It should also answer some difficult to understand concepts such as ‘does object.location tuple consider padding, margins, and content area in its size/dimensions?’ and ‘Does the location tuple in web objects consider the entire desktop and browser window, or only the viewport dimensions?’

Thanks for your time and effort.

thanks, I tried some time ago, but only today I found an explanation of parameters, starting from here:

Now I'm investigating about how to get STATE_SYSTEM_MULTISELECTABLE from accState, to provide multi-selection only when really available; I get a VARIANT structure, but I don't understand how to process it and DuckDuckGo does not help me for now, hmm.

Multiselection in Thunderbird message list

Alberto Buffolino

Hi all,
hopefully fixed multiselection support in sysListView32 yesterday, now I have problems with same functionality in Thunderbird message list.
Apparently (from my web searches), even if the list supports multiselection, there is no way to provide it programmatically, but it sounds me very strange. IAccessible accSelect is present, but it not seems to accept same parameters of the version for sysListView32, and I cannot find references, and selectRow determines unselection of all other rows...
For the moment, I have written this workaround (res is the item list):
***
if useMultipleSelection:
api.setNavigatorObject(res)
runSilently(commands.script_navigatorObject_moveFocus, res)
inputManager.emulateGesture(KeyboardInputGesture.fromName("space"))
else:
table = self.parent.IAccessibleTable2Object
resIndex = res.positionInfo["indexInGroup"]-1
table.selectRow(resIndex)
***
I not like it, but it works, even if unfortunately the emulation stops NVDA reading of list item, quite unconfortable.
Do you have suggestions? Maybe Jamie, or Marco Zehe, if subscribed to this list... yes, I know Thunderbird is not under Mozilla evermore, but, well...
Thanks in advance.
Alberto

fixed. Just for reference, accSelect is present and working, as specified here:
https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Tech/Accessibility/AT-APIs/MSAA/Interfaces#accSelect
but it not seems to accept xor of flagsSelect, so you surely can do:
nav.IAccessibleObject.accSelect(oleacc.SELFLAG_ADDSELECTION | oleacc.SELFLAG_TAKEFOCUS, 0)
but only focus flag is honored. So, split calls:
nav.IAccessibleObject.accSelect(oleacc.SELFLAG_ADDSELECTION, 0)
nav.IAccessibleObject.accSelect(oleacc.SELFLAG_TAKEFOCUS, 0)
Note: 0 is the constant IAccessibleChildID.

I have managed to get it to install by ignoring the errors and just pressing on, but it only works for a my portable install, and not the automatic as this crashed and I had to restart the computer.

Suggestion for the user guide from a user of spanish community

Noelia Ruiz

Hello:

First of all, thanks for your attention: this is my first post on this list.
I would like to bring up a suggestion from an NVDA's user, member of an NVDA's mailing list created by me for the spanish community.
This person, named Carlos Esteban, is suggesting to include practical examples (like activities) to explain use cases for object navigation, review cursor and Windows 10 OCR. He argues that many users coming from JAWS ask how the NVDA's cursor can be activated, and that the hierarchical object navigation could be better understood including a section in the user guide, with an example as following:
- Press Windows+m to move to desktop.
- Use object navigation commands...
He explains that the basic training module has this kind of examples, but some people can't purchase it.
Should we create an issue or PR for this, or do you prefer to store this on wikis or dedicated websites?
You can see the topic in Spanish at

https://nvdaes.groups.io/g/lista/topic/31886737#708

Thanks

Hi,

I Think it's a very good idea, because, in Portugal, there are lots of nvda's users who don't hunderstand this mechanisms

Thanks

Actually there are lots of people everywhere who do not get it. It took me a while to figure it out by imagining a number of layers of glass each painted with a different pattern, but looked at from the front you could not tell they were on separate bits of glass.

Yes and today's updates all went in without a problem. Its still a bit odd though to be constantly prodded by add on updates to threshold, when none of them will install of course.
Maybe there needs to be another bit in the manifest expected by threshold and if its missing then you won't get prompted.
I have possibly foolishly let all the current updates except those dealing with sound and synths be installed as per their last versions in any case.

The expected trashing of many current add ons when Python 3 version/sound changes comes out

Brian's Mail list account

Some incompatibilities are already noticed in the beta and alpha snaps, but most of them seem quite minor, but I see in the main issues list a continuous stream of changes being required to make the normal nvda core perform correctly. Having already been monitoring some of the add ons I use for their ability to work under the ever changing conditions, it looks like most, if not all add ons will break.
Should somebody not look at the contacts for the add ons and make a mail list of them and suggest that they do some testing ahead of time and fix them as otherwise there will be a problem when the new version comes out all at once, add ons will fail to run or be disabled or behave strangely if you modify the manifest as I have done.

It was just a thought, as although it is obvious a supported version of Python has to be used for nvda, I do not believe many will be very happy when the new version basically resets the clock to a time when we had no add ons.

Re: The expected trashing of many current add ons when Python 3 version/sound changes comes out

Michael Curran

By all means we will be notifying people. Especially synthDriver manufacturers. However, we are not yet ready to do that. Once Python 3 work has completed in Threshold, we will then start notifying people including providing pointers and guides to how to update add-ons. Add-on maintainers will get plenty of time (at least 2 months) to update their add-ons before Threshold is finally in an official release.
