Dave, I tested the Flmsg alpha-test with another
ARES member and there are problems.

The 8PSK125F and 8PSK250F op-modes do not
decode, garbage send and receive. All others
work just fine. Tks.

Mike,

The problem with 8PSK modes not decoding was fixed with the latest release of Fldigi.  Download and install Fldigi 4.0.12.

I was and still am using Fldigi 4.0.12, Linux version.

And so was the other gentleman I was doing the
testing with, he was using the Windows version.
The 8PSK125F and 8PSK250F do not work.

Just so ya know, I keep Flidig and all it's companion
programs current. The Fldigi NBEMS Communication
Suite is awesome.

Mike,

flmsg does not decode any modem.  that is performed in fldigi.  so you need to state what version of fldigi and on what operating system.

Dave,

I complied the 4..0.4.5 Flmsg.

The calendar heading shows the correct year on both systems now. November 2017.

I have NOT tested anything else. If time permits tonight I'll run it through the checklist.

I will perform bench tests on 8PSK125F and 8PSK250F.

Download these two test wav files:

Then play them back using fldigi's "File/Audio/Playback" facility.  Signals are centered at 1000 Hz on the waterfall.  Both correctly decode on fldigi 4.0.12 and 4.0.13.1

Ok, Dave. I did a clean reboot and restart of fldigi.
Manually changed to the appropriate op-mode
before each test, centered on 1000Hz, turned off
fldigi squelch.

The first time neither decoded. I noticed that even
though I was set on 1000Hz, the signal was not.

So I changed my center freq to 995 to match the
8PSK125F and it decoded. I changed my center
freq for the 8PSK250F so it matched the signal
on 988 and it also decoded nicely.

These op-modes appear to be very demanding of
their frequency requirements. I last calibrated my
fldigi and soundcard about two-three months ago
using the fldigi on-board WWV utility.

So, where do we go from here? :-)

Same here, strange decode on 8PSK125F and 8PSK250F at first.
Although after playing with audio settings something appears to have corrected itself.
Downloaded your test files and here is what I am getting

The 8PSK modes are very susceptible to noise and it is not uncommon the decode noise at the beginning and ending of a transmission.

I will pass along your observations to the 8PSK developer.

Are you using HF SSB for the lower speed 8PSK modes or VHF FM?
If you are using VHF FM, is there any special reason you use 1000hz?

My group has been testing 8PSK since it was developed with John Phelps a few years back. We have found that 1500hz is about the best for 8PSK. We started near 1000hz since we used that for HF, but found that it was not nearly the best. John had noted similar in testing.

But of luck with your testing of 8PSK

Frank, I set my waterfall to 1000Hz because I
was following Dave's directions for testing the
8PSK125F and 8PSK250F data that he had
sent me. Here in the Seattle area, we only use
1500Hz on our digital net operations.

Our current 8PSK tests have been on our VHF
and UHF digital nets, but we have not yet made
plans for testing 8PSK on HF.

We are looking very closely at using 8PSK1000F
as our primary op-mode on the repeater nets, and
maybe relegating MT632KL as a fall-back mode.

Testing continues. <grin>

Frank, thanks for your info, I'll pass it on here.

Ok, Mike P,

Sounds good.
We abandoned MT63 very early on VHF using QPSK-500. We then adopted the first of the wider modes such as PSK1000RC2 and it worked out well. We use 1500 as a general setting for 8PSK modes. We use the 1000F and 1200F as standard now. We also found and reported to John that at the very highest speeds, particularly 1000F and 1200F, a setting of around 1700hz was optimal. 1700hz 1000F for repeater and 1700hz 1200F for simplex FM VHF.

Best of luck in your continued testing
