Waterfall much narrower than the visible range of the spectrum box
Bill Hamel
Good evening. I am new to fldigi this may just be a newbie thing.
fldigi v4.1.00 Rig: Yaesu FT-991a OS: MAC OS X 10.13.6 Digi Mode: BPSK31 With the FT-991a mode set to DATA-LSB (or DATA-USB) the width of the waterfall goes from 700 to 1300, if I switch to LSB or USB the waterfall covers the entire spectrum area which my view currently sees from 0 to 2700. DATA-LSB or DATA-USB is the mode required for BPSK according to the Ft-991’s manual. Is this the expected operation ? It seems to me that I should be seeing the entire range of the spectrum that is in view or scrollable view. Any insight greatly appreciated. This is what I’m seeing. DATA-LSB MODE USB MODE Thank you in advance, Bill Hamel, K3TFM

What radio are you using? Do you have any notch filtering set up???

I have an older plain FT-991… your answer is in the menus. You can select the data mode bandwidth there. If I was at my radio I could assist further but I’m not… The manual is your friend.

Notch filter is OFF in the plain SSB modes (Non data) and is not an option when DATA-xSB is selected. What I don’t understand right now is that it started working … when I saw your email I went into the 991a and checked the notch filter and manually changed the modes verifying that the notch filter would change the waterfall which it did on USB and LSB but not to the extent you see below. So after I did this I took a break and shut everything down and when I fired everything back up is looked fine as I thought it should which had me scratching my head. What’s strange is that I’ve shut everything down and up again several times during the natural course of the days and it never got any better. Not sure what happened but I’m not complaining. Thanks again for the email, it may not have been the answer but it helped getting the problem resolved. I’m just hoping it doesn’t resurface because I’m not sure what corrected it. Thanks again -bh k3tfm .

I’ve read the manuals to no avail and thought that’s why I’d ask here for some help. Based on another response talking about notch filter I went and checked that which was off and isn’t an option in the 991’s digital DATA-xSB modes anyway. What has me scratching my head is that I was watching the fldigi waterfall and manually on the rig changed mode to USB and verified the waterfall changing, then hit the notch filter and saw it respond but not to the degree I was seeing in the Data mode. I then changed back for DATA-USB and notch filter isn’t an option in that mode and the waterfall still looked narrow. I shut everything down and when I came back later and fired everything back up it was working fine. I had power cycled everything naturally over the past few days which had no effect. It wasn’t until I went to the 991a and manually changed the modes that something changed. I will say that I’ve been changing the modes via the 991 and RIGCAT tags I use in the macros as well as within flrig. All I can think of is that somewhere in the CAT interaction something got dinged until I manually went to the rig and cycled through the modes … got me <shrug> … I’m not complaining bc it works now. Never the less, thanks for the input . If this pops up again I’ll try to figure out what combination actually corrected it and report it. Thanks again, -bh k3tfm

I don’t the run rig control. I use the front congtrols on the radio, FT-920. Anyway, sound's like you have it "fixed", even if you really don't understand "what" did it! Onward and upward!

without knowing the rig personally I would say data mode automatically adds filtering to cut out the outsides of the band. You can work in the waterfall in data mode or see the full spectrum in regular sideband mode. You should be able to transmit either way

Hi there,

The modem and sound card is internal to the FT-991A. Reading the manual they say that for data mode the rig must be in data mode. That said, I saw that I could transmit but I saw that on the receive side things like AFC weren’t working unless I went back into digital mode. Nor do I know if someone could decode bpsk31 that I’m xmiting in native xSB. Never the less, it is fixed now not sure what did it but my actions that lead up to it are in this thread … Thanks for the input, very much appreciated ! -bh k3tfm

Might the rig have DSP set differently (e.g., Width & Shift) for different modes?

Hi

This may not make much sense but maybe just entering and leaving the setup area and looking around, not even clicking anything and then saving again curred it. Just a thought. Marty kd8bj

Yep, I wish I was paying more attention to the series of events that fixed it, but it is working now. Thanks again, -bh k3tfm

The problem is that the Digital USB mode provides a narrow “sweet spot”. Bring up the “F” menu and find Shift and Width. Set Shift to 1200 (maximum) Set Width to 2400 That’s what works for me on my FT-991 (not A)
