This means holding the radio microphone to the computer speaker and an external USB computer microphone to the radio speaker.

We learned about this from the ARRL's Public Service Guide, which has a great chapter on NBEMS.

Hope this works for you! Good luck!

Is flmsg auto-open still working on MacOS?

wsanders@...

Edited

It seems the auto open feature of flmsg isn't working anymore on my Macs. I am running 64 bit versions of fldigi 4.1.16 and flmsg 4.0.14 on High Sierra. Neither flmsg nor a browser opens when a message is received. In addition, even when I have started flmsg along with fldigi, the "Rcvd Msgs" window doesn't pop up, although I can open it from the "Utilities" tab and see messages, but only ones that have been received since flmsg started. If I go to $HOME/.nbems/ICS/messages all the received messages are there.

Any ideas? This is my "NBEMS interface" configuration dialog:

The description of the NBEMS config items seems to be missing from the current (4.1.17) online user manual, so I'm not if this is set up correctly, except the same config file used to work in previous fldigi/flmsg/MacOS versions.

Any help is appreciated....

UPDATE: I see a new version is available. Installed 4.0.17, no change in behavior.

I wondered the same a while back and did a little preliminary research.  Both the FRS and GMRS pages on the FCC website say they can be utilized for limited data but I never searched for clarification.  I know FRS/GMRS radios like the Garmin Rino can send things like GPS position, name, and texts so it may be allowable to send other information using AndFlmsg.

Results: With the UV5X3 VOX setting reduced from "9" to "4, " Tx and Rx worked a treat.  A note; although the cable was happy with the Nokia 3.1 (low dollar) phone, it did not seem to work with the Samsung tablet.

Hello Dave,

No, a TNC-X can only do AFSK 1200bps packet which is usually intended for VHF/UHF FM.   If you want to use Fldigi, you'll need to use a sound device and some way to key up your radio (don't use VOX on your radio).  I would recommend a dedicated sound device to leave your computer's main sound device available for system notifications, etc.  There are lots of options here from home brew setups to more fancy setups like using a Signalink, Timewave Navigator, MicroHAM, etc.

There are a LOT of videos and materials out there to get you started with digital modes.  Just use your favorite search engine.

Ps.  What are you looking to do with Fldigi on your IC-229A FM mobile radio?

Are you close to Philly?
There are clubs around Phila and great teachers in the area.

We have a "Five County Digital Training Net" that meets every Tuesday evening 7-9 pm on one of the 2m FM (analog) repeaters. Folks from Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties gather to practice FLDIGI traffic. We help rookies get started.

Write to me off-line: K3euibarry at gmail.com

I can help you set up a sound card for FLDIGI (not a Packet TNC)
Winlink Packet and Pactor with a TNC are very different unless you are using VARA and your computer's sound card.

You can get the Tx/RX sound into the MIC/SPEAKER ports on old rigs, or use the 6 pin MINI DIN data port found on most newer FM VHF radios.

Dave,

I did followed the procedure you outlined multiple times when install flmsg 4.0.17.01 from http://www.w1hkj.com/bigsur/.  It stills ends opening flmsg with a blank window as shown in my attachment.

I have discovered that with the blank flmsg window open that by mousing over the known button areas that the button outlines do pop up, without any text field.  Further by blindly selecting the various buttons I can Select a ICS Form, Open a ICS message, and AutoSend the message and all works as expected.

With the exception of not displaying text for the various button fields flmsg seems to be working.  Any additional guidance is appreciated.

I had the same problem switching from Catalina to Big Sur. When I looked at the date of the files I downloaded I saw that the FLMSG showed up as an earlier version, even tho I downloaded the current one with the Nov 23rd date it showed up as an Oct 2 version . ??  I ended up getting these instructions from W1HKJ.
1) Delete the binary in /Applications
2) Delete the downloaded dmg (Flmsg) and download it again.   http://www.w1hkj.com/bigsur/flmsg-4.0.17.01_x86_64_x86_64_bs.dmg
3) Install using the dmg file.

I have been unable to proceed because I am not sure how to find and delete the binary mentioned in step 1.  I just don't know enough about how the Macs and Fldigi files are set up.
