AndFlmsg Introductory presentation pdf file posted

Ole Helgerson KI7MBR

Greetings,

I posted a pdf of a 24 slide introductory presentation on AndFlmsg that I gave to two audiences this November 2020.

The file name; 2020.NOV.AndFlmsgPresentation.KI7MBR.

The central goal was to demonstrate that AndFlmsg+android phone+HT radio = low cost, easy to use, data logger and transmitter for emcomm use.

The thoughts reflect my own perspective and may not reflect the practice or policy of any amateur radio organizations that I am currently a member of.

It is hoped that sharing this presentation provides a starting point toward achieving timely and accurate field data acquisition and forwarding to the end user.

Please feel free to adapt or use as you wish. Please credit using "....as adapted from KI7MBR 2020..." or something similar.

Kind thanks to John VK2ETA for recently adding SMS ability to AndFlmsg and to Dave W1HJK and team for the FLDigi suite.

Feedback welcome.  73, KI7MBR Ole Helgerson

Receive audio not resuming after transmit -- fldigi 4.1.16

Mark Hunn - KI7SI

I'm installing fldigi on computer that's new to my shack and am getting an error where the program does not resume receiving audio after transmitting. I'm running fldgi 4.1.16 under Windows 10 on a Microsoft Surface Pro 3. The radio is an ICOM IC-7300 and I'm using its internal soundcard over USB with port audio and the appropriate devices selected. On initial boot of the program everything appears normal with signals appearing in the waterfall. On the first attempt to transmit, the waterfall shifts to monitoring the outgoing signal as expected, but when the program attempts to return to receive, the waterfall freezes and nothing is decoded. Subsequent attempts to transmit succeed, but the program will not successfully return to receive. Here's what the event log is showing:

I'm not having any difficulty with Winlink Express and VARA HF, so I don't believe this is a hardware issue on my end, and VARA shifting between transmit and receive leads me to believe that it's not a strictly Windows issue.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Mark

edit;.... further useful perspective on FlDigi and AndFlmsg...

Re: AndFlmsg

Ole Helgerson KI7MBR

Hi Craig,

Thanks.  All good points here.  I gave my talk also to a second audienc via Zoome; Yakima County ARES at their November meeting last night.  Also have been in contact today with one of the folks who helps with the PDX NET-Net.  The main point I wanted to impart was that by installing AndFlmsg into an Android phone (or other device), one literally has, in hand, a powerful and flexible, data logging and transmission device for emergency use that is relatively low cost and which is easy to use.

There was one request to post the slides here.  I am ok with that if the file size (~3700 kb, *.pdf) does not exceed any size limits.   My talk is introductory in nature, touching briefly on; voice and digital, Winlink and Fldigi, how AndFlmsg+phone+radio can interface with other systems, options for connecting phone and radio, some results from three Androids and Linux laptop working with three radios, a brief primer on filling and sending an ics form via radio, gmail and SMS, where to find the *.apk and info, and ending with conclusions, recommendations and thoughts on emcomm use.  24 slides total.

I'd offer that if possible to do so, posting your presentation could provide further useful perspective on AndFlmsg, especially with any examples of actual field use and data routing.  And integrating an an iphone into the mix.  Who'd a thought....

Alpha version of AndFlmsg - Contestia modes and slow THOR and DominoEx modes

John (vk2eta)

Hello,

Here is an Alpha version of AndFlmsg with the following changes:

1. Added Contestia modes and RSIDs. Sending of Flmsg messages is blocked in these modes since the character set is too constrained.

2. The free text entry field in the terminal screen survives the change of screens. So if you swipe to the modem screen and back, the text typed in is now preserved. Also when the Send Text key is pressed, the text entered is cleared.

3. Added all the DominoEx and Thor modes that were missing, plus their RSIDs (eg THOR5 and others).

4. So changes to the size of the waterfall (still work in progress).

Please test and report.

Re: AndFlmsg

Craig Lundborg

Ole,
I have tried to keep things very simple so both the Ares and EYEWARN  participants in an exercise get used to using either a tablet or phone with the HT... usually we are using the ICS 213 or the general message with a pic, as we want the members getting used to the standard forms.
In training, they pick up quickly which mode is best to send either simplex or if they are under a time constraint for a repeater that could time out.
During an exercise I have put the Mobile unit on in the truck, laid the Amazon Fire on the floor under it and check back every hour or so while being busy on the Portable EOC radios.
We even had our one iphone participant actually recording the message from his HT and turn around  and relay it into the HT to get the message across County!
Our neighbor in Curry County participates and I have sent a msg on my HF base unit with a tablet and Brookings was able to receive on the regular FLDIGI Suite and pass message on to anywhere.
We run two Nets... ARES and EYEWARN ( www.CoosCountyEYEWARN.com ) both usually have an VHF net control that can receive AndFlmsg ... the wonderful advantage is it only takes about 15minutes to show a participant how to save, resend by email, or print a message.
I also find this format introduces the hams to digital, is less intimidating, with no cost... after they are comfortable, they look into the other formats available.

Hi Craig,

Greetings to Coos County from Skamania county.

A couple of questions if I could re windshield reports.  Do you use standard ICS forms, your own custom forms?

What does the data flow look like from the observer with HT+Android to presumably EOC?

Are you using audio connection between phone and HT? Easy Digi or other interface?

Mode?

Thanks in advance,  Ole, KI7MBR Carson  WA

Hi John,

Gave presentation on AndFlmsg at today's Radio Amateurs of the Gorge meeting via Zoom.  It went well, 24 slides in about 15~20 minutes. A couple of questions on downloading the *.apk etc.  It was all pretty basic, e.g. reflecting the skill level of the presenter.  A central idea I wanted to impart was that with AndFlmsg, an Android phone becomes a data logger and transmitter with transponder capabilities.  It speaks a lot of languages and fits in a coat pocket. Happy to forward the pdf if interested.  73, KI7MBR  Ole

Agreed. Somebody had to first discover to discover the "glitch" and let Dave know. This time it was me.

Very true. However, until I open a third party app and discover the incompatibility, it doesn't really matter when I installed the OS upgrade. David, has done a wonderful job this afternoon getting things straightened out.

You can disable automatic MacOS updates so that you can update on your schedule.  See the attached screenshot of System Preferences.

0930 today was our countywide Fall SET. The entire family of Fldigi programs opened as great white blobs of non-functionality.
Obviously, things did not go well on this end.
Looking forward to fix in Fldigi "The Next Generation". Anyone have an idea of a release date?
