    Xmt Audio file

      * Add ability to transmit an audio file using new
        macro tag: <AUDIO:path-filename>
        - macro editor opens an OS select file dialog
          when the tag is selected from the pick list
        - suggested use:
            <MODEM:NULL><TX>
            <AUDIO:path-filename-1>
            <AUDIO:path-filename-2>
            <RX><@MODEM:BPSK31>
          or modem type of choice
      * Audio file must be wav format, either mono or stereo
        any sample rate
      * Returning to Rx stops current and any pending audio
        playback.  Post Tx macro tags are then executed.
        T/R button or Escape key will abort the playback.
      * Please use responsibly - know and understand your
        license limitations for transmitting audio files,
        especially music and/or copyrighted material.

Example used for testing 08.12: (transmitted into a dummy load)

<MODEM:NULL>

Kim,

Below are examples of the text sent at 65, 75, 85 and 95 with one Fldigi instance on 1500 Hz and 4 other instances opened at the other waterfall frequencies. The one at 65 Hz didn't show too much on the waterfall because it was lower than the audio bandwidth. Interesting experiment.

Note: Exercising the "alerts" test button could cause fldigi to either lock up or crash.  This was observed on Pi3 / Pi4 with Buster OS, and on my Think Center M90 desktop.  The alerts code was expecting to use the default system audio output device.  It was also expecting that device to support a sample rate of 8000 samples / sec.  Many newer computers have sound card hardware that only support 32000, 44100, 48000 sps.

If you test the changes to the alerts code please report both failure and success.  Include information on OS and sound card h/w.

The sound card set up tab includes the alerts device selector:

Re: Fldigi in the Clarke Belt

Kim,

That is really cool being able to receive the Fldigi modes through the satellites. I haven't been successful with the satellites, I think they're cube sats that send the PSK31 mode. Maybe I'm not in the footprint of the satellites.

On another note I haven't had success with the hidden message on the Shortwave Radiogram Show. I guess because the signal is down at 65 Hz on the waterfall below the audio bandwidth. I'll have to try moving it up with the VFO. Good stuff to experiment with, thanks.

MP3 Files and FLDigi

Dave

A quote from https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/05/16/mp3_dies_nobody_noticed/

==========================================================================================================

MP3 'died' and nobody noticed: Key patents expire on golden oldie tech

And Fraunhofer won't renew 'em

Key patents held on the MP3 audio format expired last month – and it's taken three weeks for anyone to notice.

And the Fraunhofer Institute has declined to renew the intellectual property it owns on the MPEG Audio Layer III technology – as well as terminating its licensing programme. So yup, now you can use MP3 encoding in your products almost patent free – others who worked to develop the format still hold some of the patents – and, of course, your MP3s that used to work will still work in the future.

==========================================================================================================

So legally, the mp3 codec could be added to fldigi.  But there are better public domain audio compression codecs, notably ogg which provides a better quality audio / compression than mp3.

I will consider your request.

If it's possible, I want to transmit an mp3 audio file. I know FLDigi will do .WAV files but can't figure out how to do mp3...

Al,

I'm still a little confused.

Do you wish to transmit an MP3 file, such as a song, to someone
so that they can play the mp3 file and listen to the song?

Or, do you wish to create an audio stream of the FLDigi output and
then play that stream back and have FLDigi transmit it?

FLDigi can PLay back WAV files.  MP3 can be converted to WAV for
playback.

But playing back a file and having FLDigi transmit it is more difficult.

In the past I have used AudioPaint program to create large text in the waterfall.
The program generates a Wav.  The only way I could send it was to have a
program play it back and route the audio to the SignalLink.  The VOX on the
Signallink would then key the radio.  I haven't found a direct way to do it directly
within FLDigi.  Note - this was done on a repeater, so bandwidth was not a problem.
I was checking in to a local Digital Education Net.
Following is example of what would be received:

I agree.  It would be great to have a Macro command that would xmit a WAV or MP3 of FLDigi audio.
That way you could pre-record bulletins and send then out.  I know that this can be
done just using a text file.  But it might open up some other uses.

Re: RFi help and Raspberry Pi

Kilgore

Here is an opportunity to use a Raspberry Pi as a headless computer.   That is, no monitor or keyboard attached.  Use your existing computer to control the RPi.  Already having a Signallink connected to your radio already is a definite advantage.

You will need a RPi (3B or 3B+), a  power supply and a 32 Gbyte microSD card.   Probably a case also.

If you Google "Raspberry Pi Headless" you will get many hits.  Here's one that is pretty good:
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/raspberry-pi-headless-setup-how-to,6028.html

I suggest you find someone in your local community that is familiar with the RPi to help you set it up.
