To promote the hobby of amateur radio or how to be a Ham, the Anderson Radio Club (ARC), the Keowee-Toxaway Amateur Radio Club (KTARC), and the Upstate Carolina
Amateur Radio Society (UCARS) will hold a Get on the Air “free” event on May 11 (Saturday) from 1 pm to 3 pm at the Anderson County Main Library, 300 North McDuffie Street, Anderson, SC . Get on the Air is for non-Hams or Hams of all ages to discover the basics of amateur radio, radio operator licensing, and emergency communications.
Beginning at 1 pm, attendees are invited to view radio mode exhibits which include High (HF), Very High (VHF), and Ultra High (UHF) frequencies, Morse Code (CW), EchoLink, Satellite, Digital (D-Star and DMR), antennas, and QSL Cards. They will be demonstrated by ARC, KTARC and UCARS members. The next part of the Get on the Air program will be a presentation about how to be a Ham. It will include amateur radio basics, operator licensing, and emergency communications. At the end of the presentation there will be a drawing for a handheld VHF/UHF dual band radio followed by a visit inside Anderson Radio Club’s Communications Emergency trailer. There, radio operators will explain the radio equipment and typical emergency communications procedures.
