SCHEART will be offering Ham (Amateur) Radio classes in JUNE. This is for Technician, General and Extra. All classes will be running from June 14th to 18th from 6pm to 9pm. Some classes will not take the whole week, but will finish when all the material is covered. These classes run concurrently. You can only choose one of the classes.

Due to the Corona virus, we’re presenting the classes by video conference using Zoom videoconferencing (http://zoom.us ) If you didn’t have the time to attend in person before, now is your chance. Email me at midlandsve@.... I’ll forward your email to your instructor and they will send you an invitation to the video conference.

If you’ve never used videoconferencing before, Here’s a couple of tips:

Use a headset or headphones. Any headphones that plug into your computer will do. Even the wired ones that came with your cell phone, if it’s using the 1/8” plug. This eliminates feedback when you un mute your microphone.
Mute your microphone when not speaking to the instructor. Otherwise the class will hear any background noise from your computer.
Find the text/ chat function and use it.
New hams will have to start out with the Technician course.

Testing will be offered on JUNE 19th at 08:30 am  SCETV headquarters, 1041 George Rogers Blvd in Columbia.  We’ll take care of the administrative work first and start the testing at when the admin work is done. Bring a photo ID, an original and copy of any Ham Radio license, your FRN and $10.00 cash. If a child is testing and has no photo I.D., bring a copy of a birth certificate.

SC is having a state wide communications exercise that includes HAM radio on Saturday morning, APR 24, starting about 0900. The SCHEART statewide repeaters will be linked across the state during this exercise.

AIKEN County ARES Hams will be supporting Aiken County Emergency Management in this exercise by deploying the county EM communications trailer to the empty parking lot on the corner of Laurens and Park in downtown Aiken that morning.

Hams will be demonstrating to county personnel such technologies as APRS, which is real time situational awareness of mobile personnel that will be deployed in Hitchcock Woods. Also new state of the art DRONE technology will be operating near the trailer with the DRONE over Hitchcock Woods.

The county EM trailer includes 2 A/C units, 10kw generator, 2 Kenwood 480 HF Transceivers, 2 Kenwood Dual Band FM/APRS Transceivers, 1 ICOM 2820 DSTAR transceiver, DMR repeater, 256kb Satellite Uplink, 2 WiFi networks, WINLINK PACTOR HF system, VHF Packet, and much more.

All HAMs and non-HAMs are invited to visit and take a look at the support that HAMS provide to Aiken County.
