Date

Phoenix Dawn Exercise tomorrow

Carl Juvrud

Aiken County ARES will be participating in the Statewide Full Scale exercise tomorrow (Thursday) from 8:30AM to 1PM.

ARES operators will be at the Aiken County EOC,  manning the radio room.

We will hold a county net on the N2ZZ repeater 145.350- (156.7 tone) during the exercise.  We will be accepting simulated situation reports, starting and ending with "THIS IS AN EXERCISE". We will also be testing simplex operations on the output of the repeater.

This would give you the opportunity to test your VHF simplex range,  so please check in and participate if you are able.

Thanks & 73

International Space Station Resupply Mission to Carry New ARISS Ham Radio Gear

The scheduled March 7 (UTC) SpaceX CRS-20 mission to the International Space Station (ISS) will include the initial Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) Interoperable Radio System (IORS) flight unit, which is listed as a primary payload. The IORS is the foundation of the ARISS next-generation amateur radio system on the space station. Once at the space station, the IORS will be stowed for later installation.

The ARISS hardware team built four flight units, and the first will be installed in the ISS Columbus module. A second flight unit expected to be launched on a later 2020 cargo flight will be installed in the Russian Service Module. NASA contracts with SpaceX to handle ISS resupply missions.

The IORS represents the first major upgrade of on-station ARISS equipment. The package will include a higher-power radio, an enhanced voice repeater, and updated digital packet radio (APRS) and slow-scan television (SSTV) capabilities for both the US and Russian space station segments. The IORS consists of a custom-modified JVCKenwood TM-D710GA transceiver, an AMSAT-developed multi-voltage power supply, and interconnecting cables.

The ARISS hardware team remains busy on IORS development and final certification. While the initial unit has been certified for launch and stowage on ISS, the team is still deep into the final certification of the IORS for flight operations, and construction of a second flight unit is in progress.

ARISS will mark 20 years of continuous amateur radio operation on the space station in November.

You can subscribe to the RF Finder App.  It has many functions including distance from repeaters, direction, PL tone, Mode, etc.

BEST DAM RIDE 2020

Sunday April 19, 2020

Time to signup and guarantee your spot!

Almost time for the Best Dam Ride 2020 The date is Sunday April 19th. We (ARCA) need volunteers to man a 16 person communications network around the 100 mile Lake Thurmond course.

This is a lot of fun as the event is a Ride not a Race and therefore not intense. It is a charitable event sponsored by Chain Reaction Bicycle in Evans. This year the ride will support the Augusta Urban Ministries, SORBA CSRA Bike Group, and the Liam Caracci Foundation. The ARCA provides communications support at designated water stops, recovery vehicles for breakdowns, mobile support for sponsor vehicles, and a Network Control Station at the Start/Finish Area in the Lower Dam Recreation Area. You don't have to be an ARCA Club member to volunteer, just a licensed Amateur any class with mobile VHF (2M) equipment capability.

You will receive an event T-Shirt and there is a FREE BBQ in the picnic area after the ride for all participants and volunteers. For detailed information and display of course routes, go to the events tab on the w4dv.club website.

If you want to participate, just click the volunteer button, fill out the form, and submit. We will send you a complete information sheet and keep you informed of any changes as we get closer to the event.

This is our top event of the year and it fills up fast. So don't delay signing up!

I have attended two meetings since I arrived here in October. Great meetings! Very good, informative, useful programs!
At the end of our last meeting I met another new ham to the area, he was from So. Calif., Fullerton I believe. I believe his name may be Dave also, but I didn't get his call sign. I would like to get in contact with him and would like to receive his contact info!

Thanks!
