Roland,

Be aware that for L-band reception of these signals you need GAIN, and an omnidirectional antenna such as the magnetic mount patch would not be adequate. Even with a patch antenna:

https://www.rtl-sdr.com/outernet-patch-antenna-now-sold-seperately-other-products/

I've only seen carriers - likely at far too low an SNR to decode.

The omnidirectional antennas are unsuitable for your application, but they doesn't mean that they are "only good for the bin" for everyone.

MultiPSK V 4.39 - ALE 400 on Windows 10

Russ Tower

I have been  maintaining a daily ALE 400 keyboard to keyboard chat with my QSO partner for years with perfect performance. Today I find that if I initiate a call to him my system will only try once. No repetitive calls. If I do happen to connect to him on that one first try I can receive what he types to me but I can not transmit anything I type to him. It appears that some setting has changed in my configuration but nothing was changed intentionally. Any suggestions as to what may have happened here?

Re: VDL2 and Multipsk without direct SDR control

Paul Gulliver

I might be missing something, but isn't this the method described in the MultiPsk help file, in fact it's the only way of being able to receive all the VDL2 frequencies at the same time.
I use SDR Console with 4 receivers, each with a separate vac link to 4* Multipsk - I then use Display launcher to consolidate the separate outputs to one set of data.

http://planeplotter.pbworks.com/w/page/75894179/VDL%20mode%202#VDL2FAQs describes decoding VDL2 from the audio output of an analog radio, which made me realize it should be possible from the audio output from SDR# / your preferred SDR program.
It says two important things and describes how to do it :
1: Set a 25KHz bandwidth and USB. SDR# needs a config file edited to do this, see the link above.
2. Tune to 12.5KHz below the published VDL2 frequency. There may be some frequency fine tuning required to maximize the decodes ...
For me, it just worked.
Good luck !

Hi Patrick.
Any work you can do to get Multipsk to work with the Sdrplay would be appreciated.
And of course I would be happy to help with any testing.

No thanks. Just test the test version, if I can propose something (but it is a bit complex due to the multiple particular cases of Multipsk).

Yes there is now a rtl_tcp.exe for the sdrplay, it is on their website.
when I try to use it with Multipsk it stops at setting xtal to 80, then disconects
I can send you a RSP1 to help you .
It would be nice to get the sdrplay to work with multipsk, as there are lot of people them.

There is no need for Multipsk to have a direct connection to the SDR for VDL2 to work. This subject has exceeded the bounds of it's original title. I'll start a new one, with instructions.

Hi Patrick,

I certainly second Phillip's request.  The RSP series of radios work well,
and direct connection to MultiPSK would be great.

As always, thanks for your great software,

Hi Patrick,

Since the movement of AERO traffic to the Inmarsat 4-F1 satellite, MultiPSK shows "ASIAPAC (4-F1)" for station 50 but shows the old "POR (4-F1)" for stations 82 and 85. I believe that these should all read as ASIAPAC (4-F1) as the old Pacific Ocean Region no longer exists.

Hi Patrick,
The output from SDR# is set to the normal one I use when listening through speakers or headphones, which is [Windows Directsound] Primary Sound Driver. I can hear the VDL2 audio through my headphones. This is my Default Output, and the way I pass everything to Multipsk to decode ( so far ). I'll try to make a video and plop it on Youtube.
Kind regards,
Jem.
