BBC News website: Rental e-scooters will become legal on roads in Great Britain from Saturday, in a bid to ease pressure on public transport amid the coronavirus crisis. The Department for Transport (DfT) said the first rentable e-scooters could be available next week, as it published guidance for e-scooter-for-hire firms. The vehicles are banned on pavements, will be limited to 15.5mph and it is recommended that riders wear helmets. Privately owned e-scooters remain illegal on roads. Under the new rules set out by the DfT, local authorities and devolved administrations in England, Scotland and Wales can allow or run e-scooter sharing schemes in their areas as part of 12-month trials. I don’t get why bikes can’t ride on pavements and through shopping places but scooters can’t.
I think European ones can go faster. By they sort these things out I’ll be too old to use one!! I’ll need three wheels 🤣

The EU regs on bikes are the same as U.K. Max speed 25 kph (15mph) except for Germany have a faster one but it has to have insurance and a licence. In UK bikes are NOT allowed on most pavements. But many people cheat just like road speed disabled scooters often cheat and go on the pavement. The main difference is not the speed or going on pavements but the fact that the escooters are far more dangerous than bikes. And it is fairly obvious that most riders of them seem to totally disregard the laws. I ride an electric bike but I wouldn’t go on a main road on one of those scooters.

I ordered one a couple of years back from a Singapore start-up
company. If I was looking to buy I'd go for similar specs. It had
suspension and broad fat tyres - good for coping with potholes etc.
My thinking at the time was although I couldn't use it in UK, it'd be
good for Europe where I "used" to spend a lot of time. It meant I
didn't need a bike rack on back of my wee camper - folds up small so
storing inside no problem.
Anyway it hasn't arrived - yet!

They are really making a meal out of this. Why can't they be just treated in the same way as electric bikes?
The present treatment of electric scooters in law is ignored by a lot of owners already.

But that is the problem, they don’t want to be treated as electric bikes, they are trying for the deal that electric bike owners wanted but didn’t get. The main problem with any bike is it’s size but you need that size to have all the bits that the law demands. Scooters have little braking ability, no pedals so there is little assist (and throttles are illegal on ebikes in Europe, but not in England), no bell or lights. Ebikes weigh about 25 kilos and all that weight is needed for safety. This despite that top bike riders exert far more power that an ordinary rider plus the 250 extra horse power from an ebike motor (hope my number is correct, memory problems). I no longer carry my 2 ebikes on my motorhome because I found that I was permanently overloaded.
And to answer Peter’s question, they are making a meal out of it because if they get what they are after then some people are going to make a lot of money out of it (until people start getting killed and their relatives start suing the government for legalising them).

What with skate boards - powered and unpowered - and some of the souped-up invalid carriages on our pavements, it will soon be safer to walk blindfold in the middle of the road.

By law bike's don't have to have a bell once they have been sold by the bike shop. Suppose that is why you said "should" Ernie? There keeps being suggestions that they are going to be come law on all bikes but can only see that if it was it would be largely ignored.
On topic at the moment, I think, as bikes and scooters can be an asset to us as motorhomers.

Twas me what started it! I recognised immediately that there would be issues and demands for change – and I support those. We do need alternatives to cars and buses and even full pedal power short term for all our health’s sake. I think the government recognise that too – with their hire scooters only initially, they can monitor and control that and perhaps even trial lower speed. The issue of how to police pavement ‘abuse’ needs to be addressed too. Maybe we can get these restrictions implemented by rational argument rather than nimbyism, we’ll see – but I hope so! Hope it wasn’t too much. Duncan did a crowdfunded LIVI for his layout. Got updates quite regularly then posts saying he had to vomit for tooling. Then tooling was going ahead and next thing administration!!! He was devastated. First time he lost money and didn’t have much to start with so it has taken ages to come to terms about it.
