Although they might be seen anywhere west of Formby the dense population is in the pine woods either side of the NT access road at the end of Victoria Road - i.e. the northern access. There are so many and they are so bold that they become a real pest in local gardens (so many in fact that the NT quietly culls the population from time to time to moderate numbers!). Never been there at any time of year without seeing quite a few of them. They are a protected species so the NT would need a licence to cull. Hope they have one or else big trouble.

We saw 2, from a very great distance. We even went back and had tea, then just before dusk we ventured out again (no they didn't come and close the gates) we sat quietly in the same spot for over an hour, the spot where they're usually so prolific. We never even got a hint of them.

It got really dark so we went over to the beach to enjoy the moonlight on the sea before leaving. Shame cos my friend has never seen a red squirrel and I've never been to formby and not seen them. usually getting to hand feed them too! Maybe they smelled Blackpool on me :) Never mind maybe next time. Fred
