Useless on the M4. The engine would only run if the car was pointing

Fred,

I bought my Dell July 06 and have used the adapter when away in the van. It
charges the battery OK and as far as I can tell the Dell runs alright.

I have an auto/air charger from Dell, who are ceasing making them from the
end of this year, and apart from it constantly causing problems, it uses
about the same amount of power as the inverter and 230v charger.
Weird I know, but it's there.

Fred,

I have a Dell laptop and use a Kensington Universal 120W Power Adapter.

I think it was Andy who pointed me in that direction rather than using the

Definitely a B 2 B.
Sorry yes, it is a negative lead, direct to the battery same as the positive lead. Should this also be earthed to the chassis?
The fuses were 50 amp and I've changed them now for 80 amps.

Obviously the fitter tested the system and proved to you that it was
charging correctly?
I plugged in the sterling battery to battery charger and lo and behold, it did not work. I disconnected it aagin and checked the alternator to find...13.2 volts!
Just one point. Have you definitely go a B to B charger or an
Alternator to battery charger?
It is brand new so something must be breaking it. Thinking back, there was a small spark when I connected the last lead to the charger, which is the earth lead.
Do you mean an "earth" lead or the negative lead?

Thinking back further, when I rewired it a couple of months ago I blew 2 fuses because of this sparking when connecting back up.
Sparks are quite possible when connecting an item with DC bus
capacitors. What capacity are the fuses that you are discussing.

Could that sparking be breaking the alternator? Why would the sparking be happening? The mains charger, which is connected through a distro box to the same system works fine. It's only the battery to battery which doesn't work. Perhaps this is why Peugeot blamed the charger? It can't be the charger though as I used it successfully for almost 2 years until the old one broke.
I would be suprised if the B to B would take out the alternator,
considering that you have the start battery in between.

I am emailing Sterling tomorrow but in the meanwhile does anyone have any thoughts?

Fred

Fred,

Wouldn't it be more energy efficient to use a 12V laptop power supply
(Maplins/Action Replay) to take the power up to the 19/20-ish volts
for your laptop rather than use an invertor?

Steve.

Jenny,

The LEZ website has a clickable map:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/roadusers/lez/areaofoperation/

and if you dig deeper there's a page with about 270 more detailed
downloadable maps (pdfs):

The location check says that Sandown Park is not in the zone.

Finally in spring and winter, if we were somewhere deserted, away from houses we would run our ultra quiet honda 1000w lpg converted generator from about 6pm to 9pm. Unfortunately the generator is an inverter jobbie and because the sine curve of the ac power is squared off, although we are on230v power; when the jenny runs it Barely trickles any surplus charge into our starved leisure batteries.
With a proper charger you could charge them easily.

We can only afford to drive on average 30 miles a day, or about one hour of engine running and we usually charge the laptop whilst we do this which also seems to deny the leisure batteries of more than a tiny trickle of surplus charge from the engine.
Can anyone offer any suggestions for solutions please?
1 Get a better mains charger
2 Drive more than 30 miles a day
3 Do not use so much power.
4 Get your charging system checked by a proper autoelectrician,
preferably one with marine experience as many autoelectricians know
little about leisure battery charging.

You can only get out about 75% of what you put in, and you are putting
VERY little in!
