Re: Battery chargers DOUBLE POSTS

timsinc Sinclair

Perhaps Peter S can help. I tried to look (as a non-administrator) at
the groups website to see if Kenny's posts doubled or trippled there,
but I was unable to search for postings by individuals - only by
topic. And then they didn't all seem there.

Have to say it does make it easier if when a topic changes - such as
battery chargers to solar panels - the subject line is changed to
reflect that. Such as here: DOUBLE POSTS clearly starts a new thread!

Sorry, Peter, if I'm treading on your toes/territory.

Re: Battery chargers

Richard

I totally agree with Ernie's comment that you should fuse at the battery end of both of the positive cables feeding the batteries. Also I agree with the cable sizes though if you want to go bigger check the cable terminal entry size on the controller which probably only allows for 4sq mm. There is certainly no need for "a cable like a hosepipe" <G> There will probably be only one -ve connection at the controller. This you will make off to the -ve connection on your Leisure batteries which have an existing connection through to the -ve connection on your start battery.
Hopefully you have bought a cable entry box as it gives the best guarantee of ensuring a waterproof cable connection through the roof. You will be getting 5m of cable to make the connection from the panel to the controller. These are terminated at one end with MC4 connectors to allow connection to the matching connectors on the short tails from the panel. It is not a good idea to have the cables "floating around" on the roof before passing through it. I laid some "Quality" double sided tape on the roof between the panel and the roof entry. I carefully laid the two cables together on the tape then through the box glands. Believe it or not this is still in perfect condition after 5 years. Do NOT connect the MC4 connectors to the panel tails until you have finished all connections at the controller as the panel is obviously "Live" unless you have it covered.
If you have any further queries or concerns just say.
Best regards
Richard

Assuming a 200W panel; Minimum 2.0 sq.mm. 25A, or 3.0 sq.mm. 33A, Kenny. Plus connect the positive via a 25A fuse at the battery end or next to the van’s fuse/distribution box. That will prevent the battery discharging and causing a fire in the event of cable being damaged.

You've had all the technical specs, Kenny, from the knowledgable here,
so here is an ignorant layman's view!

Cables (that came with the kit) from solar panels to controller sort
of look like domestic lighting circuit wires, but the cable from
controller to two leisure batteries is almost the thickness of a
hosepipe! A heavy brute to neatly route around van.

Won't add HTH as it probably doesn't!

That "One Poster" was me Richard, that is how I signed the post so why
not use it.
Your comment is nonsense! I said that the System controller would put
the Leisure and Start batteries in parallel and that is what it does!
Long wires fuses and connectors make no difference to the fact that the
battery banks are connected in parallel.

No, correction. About the size of headlamp main beam cable for non LED lights which should be a fair bit thicker than for the rear lights. I have also seen Erie’s posting and I reckon that he is being very optimistic saying that you could get 25 amps out of your setup even with an MPPT controller.

It looks like a first class piece of kit and I think that Alan is right. I would play save and get it from Alpha. They have a good range of traction batteries and they are an OK outfit to deal with.

Thinking back, my 100W panel with a basic controller cost me about £700 in the noughties. An MPPT controller improved its performance by over 25%.

I would be very concerned about buying any solar panel from ebay.
There are eBay sellers and eBay sellers, some it is very wise to beware of, however not all are dodgy and it is easy to see whether the seller is legit. Particularly in this case.

I would be very concerned about buying any solar panel from ebay.

If you are set on this product buy it from here:-

I've not joined in this discussion previously as there are a few
slightly wrong statements being made.

Note:

I had solar panels fitted in 2005 to my first motorhome. It supported
my 12 volt fridge and all other domestic requirements without
requiring mains charging even in UK winter.

My 2017 Hymer had a solar panel installed and it charges the pair of
domestic batteries (in parallel - both the same type and age) as well
as the starter battery. But the insulation of the Hymer is poor
compared to the first motorhome and has not been used in the winter
periods.
