I can remember getting up of a mornings
and finding ice on the inside of the single glazed windows.
Try RAF Weeton near Blackpool, winter of 1959 (I think). We would wake up to
find ice on our blankets. We slept with out clothes in bed with us, and got
dressed before emerging from under the blankets......including out greatcoats,
and in some cases, our boots.
I can't say we felt particularly hard done by.
