Bonjour,

Merci.

Dear Ashish,

All code base are available at https://github.com/mosip

  1. ICAO quality check is expected at MDS and Bio SDK levels. Please refer to the specs here:
  2. L0 devices are available in the market and ANY devices with the specifications listed can get comply with Mosip with the development of a software layer, and a key management mechanism.  For L1 devices (primarily for Authentication use case), its a hardware-based approach where Mosip has mandated a Foundational Trust Module to safeguard the trust, usually based on a chip with specific crypto capabilities. A targetted effort is in progress for accelerating the availability of such devices, as these are mostly new types of devices and not readily available in the market. About 20 biometric/chip orgs are currently working with Mosip for L1 (based on an EoI published earlier) and they all are in various stages of readiness. We will shortly publish the organization information in our website, based on API validation results.
  3. Export packet functionality is not available currently. It will be made available in release 1.2.
Regards,
Sanjith Sundaram

MOSIP Newsletter #4

Srijoni Sen

Dear Subscriber,

We hope you are doing well. Through this newsletter, we are sharing our progress so far with you.

Platform Development

Since we released version 0.9 of the platform on open source, we have been working towards version 1 which will additionally contain the modules required for resident control of their ID usage, a module required by administrators or the platform and one for partner management. Independent testing of v0.91 has been completed, while we expect to release version 1.0 in February 2020.

MOU with the Government of the Philippines

IIIT-B and the Philippine Statistics Authority, Republic of the Philippines signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 28th August 2019, for the adoption of MOSIP in the implementation of PhilSys, a foundational national ID system for all citizens of the Philippines and qualified resident aliens.

In accordance with its mandate, IIIT-B will support the Philippine Statistics Authority over the next three years in the creation of an ID system that is inclusive, safe and empowering to individuals.  A pilot commenced in November and 500 residents have registered under PhilSys which uses MOSIP as the core.

MOSIP as a Digital Public Good

MOSIP was mentioned in the report of the United Nations Secretary General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation as an approach on digital ID that has learned from the successes and failures of early adopters in order to develop open source code as a resource for countries to adapt. MOSIP also had an opportunity to present its innovation that addresses the sustainable development goals at an event held in conjunction with the UN General Assembly 2019. The event was scheduled on september 27th, 2019 by the United Nations Capital Development Fund, as part of its efforts through FinLab to identify innovations that impact sustainable development goals through financial inclusion and digital financial services.

Events

In August, 2019 we conducted a two-day workshop for biometrics and devices companies which was in the nature of a technical deep-dive into the architecture of MOSIP and an opportunity to discuss the benefits of working with the platform. 18 companies attended the workshop and gave their thoughts and feedback on our work so far.

Open Source India (OSI) is an annual event by the team at Open Source For You magazine in partnership with India’s Open Source community and industry—to bring various stake-holders under one roof. MOSIP had a stall at OSI with an objective of talking to as many open source enthusiasts as possible about MOSIP.

MOSIP Discussions with Bill Gates

The MOSIP team, on 30th October 2019, had the pleasure of providing Bill Gates and the team at the Gates Foundation with an update on our progress to-date. The team sought his feedback on the future roadmap of MOSIP. During the discussions he provided important pointers for us to follow up. We would once again like to thank the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and our other funders (Omidyar Network & Tata Trusts) for supporting us in our mission to creating digital public goods for enabling foundational identity platforms globally.

We have a number of hiring calls for software developers open on our website - please take a look! We also have a number of events planned for early 2020, details to follow shortly. With many thanks for your support so far, and look forward to hearing from you.

Warm Regards,

MOSIP Team

MOSIP Codebase released on Github

Srijoni Sen

Dear All,

We're happy to share the general availability of the MOSIP Platform on Github from today.

MOSIP is being developed as a global digital public good, to form the core of digital identity systems. It is intended to assist Governments and other user organizations implement ‘Good ID’ in a way that is scalable, flexible, and helps avoid vendor lock-in

The key objectives of the platform are to -

  • provide the framework to create a fully functional identity system
  • provide the flexibility for a country to choose the features from the basic framework according to their requirements
  • maintain the privacy, security and confidentiality of an individual's data
  • provide a scalable and configurable solution to cater to a wide range of population (a few thousands to hundreds of millions)

To accomplish this, MOSIP provides the following basic features -

  • register a person’s identity information
  • process the information to establish uniqueness
  • generate a Unique Identity Number (UIN)
  • authenticate an individual's identity where required to provide access to services such as healthcare, education, social security etc.

MOSIP does all the above while incorporating privacy and security by design, and enabling features where the individual is in control of the usage of their personally identifiable information.

MOSIP provides only the core modules needed for an identity system. It intends to work with existing solutions for customisation and integration at a country or intergovernmental organisation level, creating specific solutions that vary according to a user’s requirements.

Professor Sadagopan, the Director of the Institute, said, about the release - “All of us at IIIT-B are very happy to be able to share the MOSIP Platform with the world. It has been the result of extensive collaboration and input from our partners and supporters, and our focus now will be to foster an open and active community around MOSIP that will take it in new and valuable directions.”

MOSIP is made available under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, and it embraces open standards. It is a critical part of our mandate to develop and evolve out in the open, with the involvement of, and contributions from diverse groups and individuals from around the world. As a result, we see this release as just a first step towards making this a vibrant project, carried forward by its contributors, and ensuring that the leading developments in identity management, privacy and security find their way into MOSIP.

We therefore invite contributors to get in touch, learn and use the platform and collaborate with us - below are some resources to get started. Our first open event is a ‘Digital Open House’ Webinar on the 26th of July at 8pm IST (2.30pm UTC) to introduce the project and answer any and all questions. Follow this link to sign up.
