Re: Tue 19 Jan 1230-1430 UTC Join Bobbi Bear and Teacher Vance in Meaningful Play - Adventure Tutorial Safaris #evomc21 #LiveEvents

Tilly Harrison

Hi guys
Sorry I missed this - it sounded fun. I'm a bit overwhelmed with marking and prep for asynchronous and synchronous teaching this week so can't really justify much time playing. I wanted to join for a few minutes today (20th Jan) to meet up and let you know but  I couldn't connect to the server (kept getting timed out). I've started my own survival world in 1.16.5 and have been blogging about my adventures https://tillysreflections.blogspot.com/
Bye for now,
Tilly

Greetings all.

I forgot to alert you to the server's quick restoration when this happened two days ago. It had something to do with permissions when moving from 1.16.4 to 1.16.5. but it's been running fine meantime.

However it's back down again as of two hours ago. The event planned there in one hour may be moved to a different location. You can check this page of updates:
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142133859/2021_Live_Events#WedJan201000UTCPlayandLearnwithOlivetreeGroveontheEVOMC21MinecraftServerandDiscord

It will likely be fixed soon. In case it happens again, please know that server status messages such as "Server has stopped" and "Server has started" appear in the #serverchat channel of our Discord group, so check here if experiencing problems (and come back soon)
https://discord.com/channels/516656532499464202/516656532499464205

Let us know here if you have any questions about EVO Minecraft MOOC (or on Facebook, or in Discord; all are monitored)

Hi all,

There appears to be a problem with the transition from Minecraft 1.16.4 to 1.16.5 which was only supposed to address performance issues (it was working fine before the upgrade :-). You can get on the server, but you can't function there (can't open boxes or doors or drop or break objects). The problem started at 9 am UTC today and we are awaiting word of a fix. I'll let you know when it's back to its normal state.

Meanwhile, you can play vicariously by watching Teacher Vance and Bobbi Bear's videos, made in the past two months, of their epic journey, mostly on easy paths leading from shelter to shelter, from the old Spawn Point (as it looked a month ago) to the wrecked Ark on the alpine plateau, and down the mountain to the plains below where there is a well-tended village, and just north of there to a great gash in the land we call The Trench.

From there we make a figure-8 march along the base of the coastal mountains down to an island where we can boat across to a desert peninsula and explore a number of villages and lost temples before coming out on a beach via an interesting savanna village in an acacia forest with waterfalls. From the beach we boat to a distant island where we have a shelter, put in for supplies, and then cross the channel through icebergs to arrive at desolate badlands on the opposite shore.

The appeal of the badlands is the extensive landscape of colorful terracotta, which make attractive building material, all around you for the taking. Bobbi Bear and I take you to three shelters spaced along a trek through the area, two on mesa tops, and the last one with a stunning sunset view from the balcony, before we bring you down to the red sands and return you to the plains where you find yourself back at the Trench.

If you want to get a feel for what traveling on the server is like, you might like to explore these videos. You can find the complete set at at this link
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142108218/Video_Tutorials

And the one we just produced before the server went down is this one:
https://youtu.be/in4C8C38fVg

When Bobbi went on to Minecraft today she found herself stuck in the shelter she is in at the end of this video, couldn't open the door to get out. Villagers could easily get in, a little awkward, small houses :-)

If you want a tour of the area or a part of it that appeals to you, let us know, and we'll meet you online for some Meaningful Play via our Adventure Learning Safaris.

We'll be announcing more once the server comes back online. We announce our activities in Discord or as Facebook or Google Calendar Events, and track them here where you can easily see them all listed in chronological order
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142133859/2021_Live_Events

Hope you enjoy the videos, and let us know if you have any questions,

Teacher Vance

Week 1 in review, welcome to Week 2 #update #evomc21

Vance Stevens

Hi everyone,

ORIENTATION, Week 1

Welcome to all who have chosen to participate in EVO Minecraft MOOC for 2021 through groups.io. We are just ending week 1 and starting week 2 (of 5) of the EVOMC21 EVO session tomorrow. According to Dave Cormier's reliable pattern of participation in MOOCs, we are emerging from disorientation into orientation in the first week, and entering the 2nd week of declaration. One way to initiate Declaration is to post an introduction here or in Facebook and tag it #m02_introductions. All the tags that people have been using in our Facebook group can be found under More >> Topics or directly here:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/evomc/hashtags

We have identified a lot of things you can read to prepare yourself for entering Minecraft and we've posted them here
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142599177/Pedagogy_of_Minecraft

And there is an infinity of YouTube videos you can find and watch, or you can see a couple dozen tailored to our EVOMC21 session here:
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142108218/Video_Tutorials

This group is where you can post questions and get answers, or you can post questions to our Facebook group, or on Discord.

These means will orient you into Minecraft but not really teach you Minecraft. Learning Minecraft, like learning a language, requires entering a participatory culture. To learn Minecraft in the first place -- and then work out how you can use it in your teaching -- you have to join us on our server.

DECLARATION, Week 2

One way of Declaring your intention to learn Minecraft would be to come online and establish your identify, find or craft a few tools, maybe even build a house on our server which says something about YOU.

We are waiting for you online to help you do that. Bobbi Bear and Teacher Vance are watching Minecraft all day today (Sunday) until 12:00 UTC.

You too can watch Minecraft without actually entering the game. If you want to see when we are online you can go in your browser to http://mc.evomc.net:8123/. On the right hand side you can see what players are online (currently 0/20). If you find a player you can click on their name to see where they are (you will be taken there on the map). You can see what they are talking about, if anything, in Discord in our #serverchat discussion forum at

https://discord.com/channels/516656532499464202/516656532499464205

Both those links will help you time your entry into the game of Minecraft, or if you want to AVOID people so you can have a little free time to experiment on your own, time that. If I see you online I will always ask first if you need help or want company before joining you, or inviting you to join me (teleport).

You can also see when we are planning to be online here http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142133859/2021_Live_Events, and you can write us here in groups.io or in FB to request that someone meet you in MC at a time convenient to you. We aim to please.

WHITELISTING ON OUR SERVER

By now we have whitelisted everyone on our server where whitelisting was straightforward. If you haven't been whitelisted, perhaps you fall into one of these categories:

  • You have registered to join us but did not provide us with a Minecraft user ID. I
n this case you need to obtain a Minecraft JAVA id and provide it to us (reply here, tell us in FB, or write to any moderator personally)
  • You provided us with a Minecraft ID, we tried to whitelist you, Mojang reported that this ID did not exist.
  • You might not fit our profile so we didn't whitelist you.
In all cases, if you have not been whitelisted, still want to be whitelisted, and think you should be, please write us and explain your condition, and we'll try to help you.

Remember that you must register first as an individual user. If you have two users piggybacking off one Minecraft ID, please register each user who will be on our server separately with a unique profile giving each one's true status. We can write you if we have any further questions, but in order to be whitelisted you MUST register with us as an individual who is planning to join us in Minecraft here: https://forms.gle/K2WhQAZNUg698ZCV7

FOR MORE INFORMATION

We have a lot of information and weekly assignments posted on our Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/evomc/
and a user manual of sorts available at our wiki, http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/
You can see there how to join our server, how to set up Discord, and much else.

All the important information appears on the front page at the link above, and on whatever page you are viewing on our wiki, there is a sidebar at right where all the essential links are a mouse click or finger tap away.

If you are reading this information at https://groups.io/g/minecraftmooc/, you can also write this list with any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in our Minecraft world,

Teacher Vance

Hi everyone,

The archive for the EVO Minecraft MOOC kickoff event Jan 11 has been blogged here, https://learning2gether.net/2021/01/11/176472421/

On this page you'll find YouTube video and audio-only from the Zoom session, and also the replay from the FB stream, which may not be viewable now, but I'll fix it later (you should be able to see it on the #evomc21 Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/evomc, which takes you to its direct link here, https://www.facebook.com/vance.stevens.3/videos/10158846255149719).

There are also FB and Zoom chat logs, with questions asked in the Zoom text chat answered here.

This was also Learning2gether episode 505. All were welcome to attend, but anyone who missed it should be able to get a sense of what happened from there artifacts posted here.

Hi all,

The Electronic Village Online events in which some of us participated have been blogged here,
https://learning2gether.net/2021/01/10/electronic-village-online-opening-kickoff-and-evo-minecraft-mooc-pre-session-server-party/

On this page you'll find video from both the #EVO2021 Opening Kickoff and the EVO Minecraft MOOC #evomc21 server party that followed close on its heels - with other online artifacts from the events and descriptive show notes. Enjoy.

Hi - I participated last year, but I have a new account this year and think that I need to be whitelisted again. I tried to load and join the server, but it told me that about needing to be whitelisted. What do you need from me to do that? My user name is (I think) <gidgad2616>. Also, I'd like to play with my son - he tried to play with us some last year, but got a little out of hand with perhaps taking some things he shouldn't have. We have talked and I think he understands that issue better now (he's also grown up just a tad!) -- so could we include him as well? He plays on a Nintendo Switch - will that be possible to still join the same EVO world? Thank you!

That's great Tilly,

I hope it's plain as day once you know where to look.

In the proposal it says to see http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/ for more information

At that wiki it says

What are your first steps to join us in Minecraft?

Learn how we communicate with each other

That last step is what you are doing now, and its purpose is to get you pointed in the right direction.

The other links should work in this message but if they don't they are on the front page of the wiki. The one that says Connect with our 2021 Server should tell you that we are running 1.16.4 and it explains how you configure your Minecraft client to reach it.

should give you the information you need to reach us there.

If you are planning to join us today you only really need Zoom. We're just going to explain who we are and all of the above (or show you where to find the information). How to join the session today Jan 11 at 1400 UTC can be found here

There's also a sidebar on our wiki page where there are links to just about everything you want to know, including the above. There's a lot of noise there but as any ham radio operator knows, tune it just right and you'll find the signal you're looking for.

And for any further questions, just write us here.

EVO Minecraft MOOC 2021 begins with an opening kickoff in Zoom and Minecraft on Monday Jan 11 1400 UTC #Announcement #evomc21 #LiveEvents

Vance Stevens

Hi everyone,

We are using this Groups.io list as a kind back channel this time around because EVOMC21 plans to operate in 2021 mostly on the EVO MC Server and in Discord. In order to learn how to play Minecraft you have to get in the game and play with us. Moderators and other players can help make your experience pleasant and constructive.

Discord is an app which allows us to use voice while playing in Minecraft. It does much else besides, but it's easier to learn with us if we can talk to one another in while in Minecraft (as opposed to using only text).

Teacher Vance, lead moderator of EVO Minecraft MOOC since 2015, will be here in groups.io to take your questions if you need help getting into those two spaces or have any other concerns.

You can find out a bit about me at https://learning2gether.net. When you reply here, please introduce yourself to the group and tell us a little about yourself.

I posted about the EVO Opening ceremony in a previous post. We are a part of EVO. You can find out more at http://evosession.pbworks.com or come to the Zoom meeting on Sun Jan 10 at  1400 UTC. There you'll hear from all the EVO moderators present, and from any participants who wish to speak or ask questions.

You can find out about all the EVOMC21 events that I know about, including the one on Sun Jun 10, at our live events page. After these events take place, they will be archived here as well:
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142133859/2021_Live_Events

You will see there that EVO Minecraft MOOC kicks off in Zoom on Mon Jan 11 at 1400 UTC. At all the listings on that page you can see a link giving the time of the event wherever you are, what it's about, and information you need to join the event. To join the one on Jan 11 visit
https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZctf-6trzMsG9P-x_QmNvhSeIyuIPxGK4vp

We'll try to overview the session and explain the resources available at our portal page http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/. We hope we've explained there what you need to do to join us, but if you have any questions, you can ask them at that meeting. Jane, Bobbi Bear, and I will also go into Minecraft and share our screens in Zoom to give you an idea of what life is like on our friendly server.

EVO Moderators come from all over the world so we're in different time zones. We need to find out from you, if you're planning to join us in MC, what times you can be there so we can be there too. When we start to get a sense of that and who needs help, we'll add more events to try to accommodate your schedules. I'm in Penang, Malaysia, so I'll be scheduling events at around the time of the two scheduled, or earlier, since those times are pushing my bedtime. But we have others who will be available half a world away from me.

In the lead-up to our session I've been making videos of trips Bobbi Bear and I have been making around the server.
http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142108218/Video_Tutorials

You can have a look at those, and if you want to learn to do what's in those videos, we can meet up and get you started.

Hope to hear from you soon and meet you at our opening meetings and on our server this EVO season.

Hi Marijana,

Thanks for replying here. There hasn't been much traffic on this list. Planning has gone over to the Google Doc which you just asked to join (accepted :-).

I expect that this list will be used by people who are new to Minecraft and Discord or not on Facebook who have questions on how to get started. They can get personalized help here. Two dozen people have registered for our session so far. Six have listed themselves as Newbie, and this is only the second day of registration.

Rose Bard has produced a very short video introducing EVO Minecraft MOOC and showing the new spawn point created by Surajmuhke. I've put it on the front page of our wiki here: http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/

There you can also find the registration link for the session, https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc6rsE7QW1u2DW2g6SCzSTqkJbasfFqhbT59WmJHufhpNUAkw/viewform

Each person who wants to join us in Minecraft needs to register. Your registration helps us ascertain number and demographics of our participants, and when you provide a Minecraft user name we can be sure you (and your two gentlemen sons) are whitelisted on on our server for this year.

Please also check the Live Events page for 2021 here http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142133859/2021_Live_Events

There you can see that EVO kicks off in Zoom at 14:00 UTC on Sun Jan 10, and EVO Minecraft MOOC has it's first live session the next day also at 14:00 UTC, in Zoom and in Minecraft, screen shared for those who don't have it yet.

Details for join the meetings and times where you are - for these and events we are still planning - are given at the Live Events page. As soon as we can, we hope to have our meetings in Discord and Minecraft, so Discord needs to be a priority if you plan to stay with us throughout the session; see http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/142231248/2021_Discord

Unless you plan to lurk (and you would be welcome) you'll need to join us in Minecraft itself in order to gain full benefit from our session. Information on how to do that is overviewed on the Front Page of the wiki and also at http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/w/page/141007461/2021_server_info.

That's probably enough for now

Welcome to all our newbies and welcome again to one and all. If you have any questions you can create new topics here and ask them.

Hope to see you 'in world' soon,

Teacher Vance

Hello all!

Sorry for late reply.

I haven't been closely following due to many things happening in my country and some personal issues.

I will try to help within groups.io and Facebook as much as possible at least for the first EVO weeks.

Filip has been a bit ill, caughing a lot, he was also tested on COVID - the results were negative. But, we are seeing doctor. Anyway,  I hope when he finds the time and together with Domagoj, they  will play MInecraft in our server. I will check for their Minecraft accounts to be whitelisted if they are not already.

I will also need to ask for Googe access.

Also, one of my eTwinning colleagues wanted to promote the EVOMinecraft session within her eTwinning group about Games, but I told her to mention that Minecraft needs to be bought first, after she asked me if it was free. I explained and shared the link http://evo2021proposals.pbworks.com/w/page/141302220/EVO_Minecraft_MOOC_2021.

Maybe we get some EU participants. Most EU teachers, if they use Minecraft they use Microsoft EDU edition. I still hope some will join.

Talk to you soon

With an eye on the calendar, if you want to join us in EVOMC21 the call for Participation has been issued by EVO http://evosessions.pbworks.com/
and you can register for EVO sessions officially from Jan 3 through Jan 10, 2021.

EVO Minecraft MOOC tends to be more flexible, and you can register for our session at any time; see our proposal for instructions and more information
http://evo2021proposals.pbworks.com/w/page/141302220/EVO_Minecraft_MOOC_2021

We're having to firm up our whitelist and registration for our session via the form you find at the link above is necessary for staying on the whitelist, or for newcomers to gain access to our server.

The EVO 2021 kickoff event is now set at 1400 UTC Sunday June 10.
I propose that we have our first EVOMC21 event the following day, which is the day after close of the official registration window, Sunday June 11, at 1400 UTC in Zoom. Once we've met initially in Zoom we'll try to move our EVOMC21 meetings into Minecraft and Discord.

EVO sessions run for 5 weeks through Feb 14, 2021.
EVO Minecraft MOOC tends to have people gathering there all year long.

I plan to call another planning meeting for moderators in Discord on Sunday Dec 27 at 1400 UTC, the normal time for our meetings (but not the normal day). By then we should have agreed on the date and time of our opening session

I will announce the event in Discord but if you wish to be involved in these meetings on others days / times you need to let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate other schedules. We need to hear from you though, otherwise we'll stick with the 1400 UTC times because when we have meetings at those times people often attend, and we've had no feedback so suggest we do otherwise.

After the meeting a week from now I'll probably stop using Groups.io to communicate with moderators and throw it open to participants who want to use it to ask questions. Our group will attempt to use Discord and Facebook for EVOMC21 communications, but I recognize the need for an easily understood forum for those who need help with DIscord or who aren't on Facebook, or who might have questions they'd like to ask in an email forum.

Looking forward to the start of EVO 2021. Meanwhile I'll be standing by here (and in FB and Discord) to handle any questions or suggestions.

Greetings to moderators and others who may be getting these mails as participants in EVO MInecraft MOOC,

Hi folks,

It looks like we've narrowed down to a focused group of moderators who are willing to meet regularly and who are all on Discord. All current EVOMC21 moderators are members of this group.io list but this list seems to be a one-way communication channel.

Meanwhile in Discord we have a robot that sets our meetings for us. Sesh has just announced the following:

Sesh bot sez PlannersMeet, Saturday, Dec 19 ⋅ 6am PST

This was not on the agenda last week but needs to be addressed this week
When is our kickoff? (Vance suggests Monday Jan 11); see https://docs.google.com/document/d/19UbZWEE86q328xrTNsE__Mzi7QNHW_Lr5UhmADZZAp4/edit#heading=h.gh2qsajbf30q

The time of the Discord meeting tomorrow, Saturday, is given here as per the WorldClock
https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=EVOMC21+co-moderators+planning+meeting+Dec+19%2C+6+am+PST&iso=20211219T06&p1=234&ah=1

If you can't make the meeting you can comment here or at the link above (the Google Doc) on when you think the EVOMC21 first meeting should be. I propose Monday Jan 11, 2021 at 1400 UTC, which is also 6 a.m. Seshbot time, or 9 am for those of you on the eastern seaboard USA.

If you want to meet to PLAN at different times we are open to additional meeting times on different days at different hours. We could also have the EVOMC21 kickoff on a different day at a different hour but that time seems to at least be when people who attend the planning meetings are up and about (or still awake).

If you have any input here we just need to hear from you.

If there is no further input from moderators here on planning I think I'll focus on Discord for organization from now on, until the sessions start.

I think it will be a good idea to include groups.io as one of the places we suggest that people join us (the others are Facebook and Discord). I will monitor any interaction here and if people come here with questions I'll steer them to Facebook and Discord as best I can.

Facebook is great for sharing photos and experiences but it's difficult to find needed information there. I've tried to put as much needed information as possible at http://missions4evomc.pbworks.com/. Discord is wonderful for interaction and we have channels there that can help filter out information, so it's an ideal portal except that many educators are not familiar with it. Most people can handle email which is why I intend to suggest everyone join this groups.io in January. All of these spaces have their affordances and all have their disadvantages, but with the three of them, everyone has a space they can find what they need to know in the critical early days when people are trying to orient on our activities and might leave in frustration if they can't get their questions answered.

If you have anything to add either as a participant or moderator (we have both as members of this group) it would be great to get your input here,

Teacher Vance
