Ukraine War: Joint Statement of Socialist Tendency (Russia) and RCIT

1) Comrades in the Ukraine with whom we are collaborating do the following: They advocate the formation of independent popular militias in order to defend the country against Russian imperialism. 2) However, such militias do not exist yet. Consequently they serve in the VTO - the official local territorial militias which are formally under the command of the army. 3) If they would not do so, they could not defend the country with arms in their hand. Socialists did also defend Iraq against Yankee imperialism and Argentina against Britain by joining the army because unfortunately independent popular militias did not exist. If they would not join the army under such conditions, they would betray the principles of anti-imperialism and would be reactionary traitors. And which Marxist wants to be a traitor?! 4) As soldiers they use the arms they get. If they can use modern arms (from NATO sources) it is better, because with such weapons they can better defend the Ukraine. 5) At the same time - as the statement explains - socialists
warns against the goals of Western imperialism and the Zelensky
government. 6) Fortunately our Russian comrades are better anti-imperialists than most of the Western left which refuse to defend the Ukraine. These Russian comrades therefore totally agree with such an approach. For this reason they have published this statement on their website in Russian language. A very courageous act for Marxists operating in Russia!

I get that you want to defend Ukraine against Russian imperialist aggression, but how do you separate that out practically, on the ground, from the support that the EU and NATO imperialists are giving Ukraine? What does "independent of any imperialist influence!" mean on the battlefield? Does that mean you only support units using 'Ukrainian' weapons? If Ukraine is subject to aggression, why can't they use any weapons at their disposal, including those supplied by other imperialist powers? For me, the war in Ukraine has become a war of inter-imperialist rivalry and Ukraine a non-innocent pawn, so to call for defence of Ukraine becomes a call to support the EU and NATO. Matt. |
