Poland: Demonstrating for Women’s Rights and for an End to the Right-wing Government | Lefteast
Louis Proyect
Poland has seen enormous demonstrations unfold since October 22 when the Constitutional Court decided to ban abortion in almost all cases. It has been a big movement launched by women and the youth, but which different sectors of society have joined. A movement that has also become a catalyst for the people’s anger with the ultraconservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) government. Proof of that widespread anger came last Friday, when one demonstration gathered more than 80,000 people. We have interviewed Dagmara Zawistowska-Toczek, a teacher in the city of Gdansk who has actively participated in the movement, so as to get a good look at how things are on the ground.

Working with wikileaks
jenorem
Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi has worked for some of the country's top publications including la Repubblica, l'Espresso and, now, Il Fatto Quotidiano.
In 2009, she started working with Julian Assange and WikiLeaks on
secret files concerning the war in Afghanistan, the US diplomacy cables
and Guantanamo detainees. She also investigated top-secret files leaked
by whistleblower Edward Snowden, uncovering serious cases of
environmental pollution in Italy and the exploitation of Pakistani
workers in a factory operated by an Italian company, among others. Maurizi was a witness in last month's Assange extradition hearings.
As a London judge ponders over whether to extradite the WikiLeaks
founder to the US, we spoke to her about her experience making powerful
enemies, what she describes as smear campaigns against WikiLeaks and
those working with them – and why Assange should never have left Berlin. Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email.

A view from Berlin
jenorem
Four years ago, I stayed up all night watching the election results. I
was in a bar in Neukölln packed with other people from the U.S. I had
only planned to stay for one beer, but I was still there when the cops
came at 3am. to throw everyone out. We had to search for another bar
that would let us watch CNN until 6am. This time around, I just went to sleep. In a dream, I saw a map in
which Biden had won every single state. But when I looked at my phone in
the morning, reality was exactly as I had expected: Biden had won a few
million more votes, but so had Trump. The two candidates were neck and
neck, and the Times announced the beginning of a “nail-biter” that could last for weeks. People in Germany wonder this could happen. If the U.S. President
were elected in Germany, Biden would win by about 100%. (A dogged
Exberliner reporter found a few Trump supporters in Berlin, but
this is really the exception that proves the rule.) And just counting
Americans in Berlin, my feeling is that Bernie Sanders would be
President for Life Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email.

Ezekial Emanuel on Biden team
John Reimann
Copied with his permission from Rob Wallace's FB page: So I've been commissioned to write a piece on the new Biden COVID task force. One member is Ezekiel Emanuel, Rahm's brother. Do you remember in Obama 2014 he argued in favor of a eugenics for the elderly? At a time when diseases of despair began to ravage rural America, leading to the start in unprecedented declines in American life expectancy, especially among whites in the Midwest and South, with the worst counties undertaking the greatest switch from voting Obama 2012 to Trump 2016. It's a stance Emanuel recapitulated in 2019 to MIT Technology Review: "These people who live a vigorous life to 70, 80, 90 years of age—when I look at what those people 'do,' almost all of it is what I classify as play. It’s not meaningful work. They’re riding motorcycles; they’re hiking. Which can all have value—don’t get me wrong. But if it’s the main thing in your life? Ummm, that’s not probably a meaningful life." One wonders what this will mean for Biden's intervention in nursing homes. Meanwhile the Gates Foundation provided the funds for an article the Guardian published couple days ago on the merits of child labor. Re: Green vote?
fkalosar101@...
I like the things Hawkins says and I like Walker. I can't comment on the quality of the recent campaign because the highly effective campaign of voter suppression by the Democrats, in my opinion, renders all such judgements moot. It's true they weren't much in evidence day to day; not sure why.
I intend to follow whatever resistance Hawkins can summon up against the Biden abomination and agree with his assessment that there is no time to be wasted in waiting for the Bideneers to get their breath back before resisting the political disaster that Biden is IMO stupidly preparing. But despite past differences, I agree with Stewart in that I absolutely do not think that the Green Party of record is the mass party of the future. I have no current plans to join even if I wind up working on their "resistance" whatever that turns out to be. It does seem however, that the Green Party as of its latest incarnation, is something more than a mere leftwing Lesser Evil. Not sure where that leaves one, but, to be honest, while I am glad to see an end to Trump at least for the time being, the Biden reality frightens me in some ways more than Trump did in 2016--though not more than Trump in 2020 would have done. Something needs to get going soon and the 'liberal" democrats in my opinion are on board with Biden permanently. So if Hawkins is starting somethin i am for it at least for the time being. Maybe it's Champ. The damn thing looks like a biter.

This isn’t over!’: Trump supporters refuse to accept defeat
John Obrien
Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi wrote in 1924 in his publication: Young India - where he called for "the death of homosexuals"
and wrote that in two different issues of that magazine. And when his wife became sick - he denied her drugs which
she died from. Yet he then became sick with the same illness and took the same medication, that he denied his wife!
Religion was the reason! Like the popular caste system and throwing the surviving widow alive on the dead husbands fire.
While there were left wing groups and publications condemning this - others were silent - and none defending LGBT.
Many nations leftists have refused to challenge arrests, beatings, torture, medical experiments, murders of LGBT - due to religious "faith".
Look at the various left press when they wrote about this in nations around the world. And in the U. S. left, it was almost only
the left wing anarchists who did.
Much of the U. S. left had adapted and accepted religious backwardness and failed to support those being harmed.
They knew and did not care, because they reasoned that their interests were "the workers" and of course the perverts
were thus "not the workers" they wanted. So ignore all those imprisoned and horribly brutalized.
Instead of accepting wrong - one should combat it. And I work with faith believers as an open Gay socialist.
Some are famous and leaders of their different faiths. But it was not the U. S. left that brought that about sadly.
Religious prejudice is accepted by some or most leftists - showing opportunism and disregard for principles of
"workers of the world unite"
And the Roman Catholic Church has been the worst of all the organized religions, in simple documentation on the
immense blood and damage over two millennium of records, of the lands and people it targeted and exploited, etc.
From: Michael Meeropol <mameerop@...>
If anyone is willing to actually read a book about these issues, I highly recommend KAREN ARMSTRONG'S book (probably over 15 years old) THE BATTLE FOR GOD. It investigates the tension between fundamentalism and a more balanced approach to religion in
the three ABrahamic Religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) --- it is a tour de force --- with lots of detail ---
Armstrong is a former nun who is probably fluent in Latin and Arabic (don't know about Hebrew) ----
(she also wrote a biography of Mohammed which I have not read) ....
Religion is a mixed bag --- Martin Luther King was a believer ---- a practicing minister --- there were revolutionary Cathoic Priest throughout Latin America over the past decades ---- Gandhi was a Hindu as is Modi --- there are pigs in all religions
and there are wonderful individuals in all religions ---
100% generalizations (including this one of course!) are always wrong ...

"Real liberals are concerned from the start with social inequality as such and not as some bullshit godgiven individual rights issue. Very few Americans post-Reagan can even grasp how this is possible. That, not 'engaging' with fake liberals, is the problem the Left faces."Your friends, eh? And of course you are a worker and anyone who calls your bluff is a mere "abstraction" and not a worker. How convenient. But on your thin evidence, this little clique of yours are concerned only with bourgeois rights and with nothing more concrete. That's what I call abstract. But who am I to contest the tenets of revealed religion? I also am a worker--it's laughably arrogant, though very revealing, for you to claim sole title to workerhood--and my assertions are based on hours of direct contact with and conversations with living human beings as well as serious reading and hours of study--not on the self-referential murmurings of a mutual-admiration society. I repeat--real liberals, like Bernie Sanders, begin with a profound appreciation of economic and political inequality and not with the moral abstractions about god-given rights that the vast majority of pseudoliberal Biden supporters are offering up. Then they go all wrong. But Sanders and AOC differ sharply with the facile rights-mongering of most Biden supporters, who will never stop wanting to have their cake and eat it too and who mostly pursue their phony liberalism insincerely. Real American liberalism in the FDR-AOC-Sanders sense is an endangered species that Biden will do his best to eliminate as he pursues the chimerical and politically disastrous war on the left that is at present his sole policy position apart from a possibly serious attempt to resolve the pandemic. Considering the imminent availability of more than one effective vaccine, the latter should not be outwith the capacities even of a reactionary neoliberal government if it at least understands the rudiments of actual governance. Even Bush Jr. could have managed it with a little help from Poppy. The election of Biden is a four-alarm calamity for the traditional semi-social-democratic American liberal--a species barely represented last week in McPherson Square or Lafayette Square. More importantly, it is a disaster also for American socialism. Whoever does not pivot immediately to all-in resistance against the Biden abomination is giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Of course, there is "liberal" in the "neoliberal" and "classic liberal" sense. Perhaps that's what you and your ragged-trousered apostles have in mind.

I notice that none of this slimy faux outrage was visited on Louis Proyect when he posted the comic and repellent video of Paula White gibbering in tongues under a headline clearly mocking her trailer park origins!
That was not only attacking a religious person personally, it was an attack on the proletariat itself!! Who else lives in trailer parks? Shameful, shocking!!

Tristan.
Apparently you are privileged and do not have to endure religious fanatics and their oppression.
Are you really ignoring the violence carried out in various forms against those viewed as "sinful" and "different" and not conforming?
And if not - why are you promoting what the oppressed always hear when they express their righteous anger?
If you choose to not want to be angry, or actively side against the religious fanatics oppression -
could you allow us who are under such attacks our whole lives - not having to hear it is our anger that you state "should" not be harsh.
