Re: Toward Class Struggle Electoral Politics – Against the Current

I have a serious question about the DSA,that is a major topic of this interview.Could somebody explain the logic behind the idea that the Democratic Party can somehow be moved to the left? This still seems to be a major tenent of the DSA,and one covered in this interview.

It may be cliched to say,at this point, that the Democrats are the graveyard of social movements. This is a point discussed, and rejected, here, but the history of the Democrats in the last 48 years, seems to bear this out. From the antiwar and women's movements of the early 70s,to Obama, and Occupy. These movements have all been either crushed,or co-opted,by the corporatist, and bourgeois classes that control the party. From George McGovern,to Jesse Jackson,to Dennis Kucinich,to Bernie Sanders,we have seen the repeated efforts of the Democratic Party leaders to crush,or subvert, any left leaning candidate, that gains any popularity or momentum. At what point are those in the DSA going to realize that trying to remake the Democratic Party into a leftist party,is an exercise in futilty? Will they ever?

I have worked for independent campaigns, and for third parties long enough to understand what a struggle it can be,but I do believe if we could pull enough voters,we're talking maybe tens of millions, away from the duopoly, into one single third party that served the needs of the poor, and working class,we could accomplish something.

I know I am not the only one,who was hoping that the government response to COVID-19,from both Trump, and the Democrats in Congress, might have been that event that woke the average voter up to the realization neither wing of the capitalist party cares if they live or die,but no such luck here.Clearly it's going to take a lot worse than 300,000+ preventable deaths, and thousands of new homeless because of the pandemic to accomplish this.
