In Stewart's essay, the word "peasant" does not appear; yet the peasant and the peasant's market was the centerpiece of the economic dilemmas confronted by Lenin, Bukharin, and - by 1928 - Stalin. I encourage people to read Cohen's fine biography, which is also a useful narrative of Soviet history throughout the 1920s.
