Yaesu FT-891 and the loop controller WORKS!!!

Jay Christensen

Hello All,
I have a Yaesu FT-891 and wanted to get it working with Loftur's Magnetic Loop Controller, and I need to thank Jonasson Loftur VE2AO, and Joe Street VE3VXO for all your help. Joe recommended a USB Host Board from Hobbtronics.com to take care of the TTL to USB conversion problem. (https://www.hobbytronics.co.uk/usb-host/usb-host-board-v24) The only problem was it took forever to get one delivered here in the states. That along with Jonasson's help as to were to look in the software to make my changes, it all came together today. It works perfectly with the modifications I made to the FT-450 rig software. I use it as a single VFO as the Ft-891 does not have a command to see which VFO is in use. I set it up as VFO A only. That's  it, Works Great. And a shout out to Colin ZL2ARL just to let you know that it can be done.
Thanks again Jonasson and Joe.

This is a beautiful loop Jay. I am new to HAM radio and am building my first loop. I would love to bounce ideas off of you.

Hi Jay

Glad to hear you got it going!  I was using mine on field day with a 160m loop!  Once you get everything set up it just works like a charm.  The way a magloop was always meant to be.

Jay it looks great ,. I can't wait you guys are making me work hard on this lol,, so far loop is working and got my vac cap n stepper clutch drive set up with a 8 -650pf 3kv and it is turning great by hand, waiting for the board from Jonasson, got most my parts sourced getn to the fun part... And I may have to do some more experimenting with the loops had a impulsive buy the other day when I came across a 25 to 4000pf 5kv  cap,. I'm betting I'll be able to tune a 8ft loop with spoon n fork heheh.. thanks for all the inspiration guys,. Couldn't have done it without all your knowledge n posts..  ,. I almost bought a precisionrf lab tuner kit few weeks ago when I thought I could get the tuner in a kit for 275,. Uhhh ya when he sent me the invoice for 1550$ I said.  Uhhhhh yaaaa noooo.. just trying to make a antenna n tuner box not trying to pay my rent for 2 months.. that was shocker. When he said the lab tuner kit was just the tuner part , I needed the whole box controller box to go with it,. I said I thought that's what the lab tuner kit was ,. The box and electronics in a kit.,. ,🤣🤣🤣. Uhhh no.. I'm off to bed it's late n work in 4.5 hrs uhhh. Not enough time in my days..

Hi Jay

The email address I have for you doesn't appear to be working. Can you please share the changes you made to the code for the FT-891?

That loop is a work of art BTW!

I am building the loop controller. I figured since FT-897 is in the list it would work for FT-891. Oops.

May I too get the code changes for the FT-891?

Did you receive my email and attached files?
What do you think?

Hello Jay,
I am planning on building the loop controller to be used with Yaesu ft-891. Could you please send me the code and info how to get it running?

Mikko,
Send me your private email address and I will send you the code.
*** Be Aware You Will Need To Purchase A (USB Host Adapter Board V2.3) From Hamtronics With Serial Firmware Installed***  to convert TTL to USB, simple TTL to  USB Adapter Cables DON'T WORK,  I have tried. They are NOT Host Boards.

HamTronics?
or Hobbytronics?

I checked Hamtronics.com and couldn't find mentioned Adapter Board.

At hobbytronics i found the USB Host board, and even a newer version of it: 2.4:

Is that v2.4 a version that is supporting the goal ??

Thanks Jay!

This board should work as long as you get it with the

USB Host - Serial Driver for FTDI, CP210X, PL2303, CH340/1 and CDC

Software installed.

Hi Jay,
Thanks so much for developing this solution. I was going to use a different radio but would rather use my FT891 so I'm sending a request for your code to your address from the digest. You should be able to reply direct to my email address from that.

John,
I sent all the information to john.siefers@... On June 5th.

Jay,

Been reading this thread and am interested in how you are connecting/controlling  the Magloop controller to a Yaesu Ft-891.  Can you point me at a source for code and an explanation of what connections are necessary?

Thanks.

My email  is correct on QRZ and the information you request is easier transfered on email as it requires file attachments. Send me a private email.
