Success! Backing up Korg disks using Windows 10

o2william

I have finally had success backing up 01/w floppies with a Windows 10 PC using the shareware program Floppy Image:
https://www.downloadsource.net/1747/Floppy-Image/

It seems many modern USB floppy drives lack the on-board circuitry to read/write RAW sectors.  So I purchased an old USB floppy drive from eBay -- an IOmega BXXU013B 3/5" USB drive that I believe was manufactured sometime around 2005.  It cost me $20.

Windows 10 didn't recognize the drive automatically, but I followed the setup process described here and it worked:
https://www.techgeekandmore.com/getting-the-iomega-usb-floppy-drive-working/

After installing the drive, I found that the Floppy Image program can read/write Korg disks as long as they are double-density (720kb).  If you have high-density (1.44mb) disks, those can work too -- you just have to cover the upper-left hole in the disk with opaque tape.  This will make the drive treat it as a 720kb disk.

Using Floppy Image, I just save the disk as an uncompressed image file (*.img) and it works!  The program saves *.img to my Windows PC and can write it back out to a different floppy which the Korg reads with no problem.  Once I back up all my disks I'll probably explore getting a floppy emulator for the Korg.

I also figured out how to write standard MIDI files from the Korg onto a floppy, in a format that can be read from a Windows 10 machine. If anybody is interested, I can write up better instructions for both procedures and post them online somewhere.

Hi William,
Couple of years ago I bought the same Iomega floppy drive for $3.00 (yes!) on garage sale. It didn't work, so I put it in the drawer and forgot about it. After reading your post I pulled it out, and, using the procedure you provided, my Windows 10 recognizes it! Great!

I also tried to download the "Floppy Image" utility, but couldn't get it from https://www.downloadsource.net/1747/Floppy-Image/. When clicked on download, the process doesn't start. So I click on "here" to force the download. Now I'm getting a message:

"Hmmm… can't reach this page"

So, is there other way to download "Floppy Image"?

Thank you in advance for your suggestion. I also need a way to read old diskettes from my 01WproX...

Hm, sorry about that... I didn't actually try that download link.  I already had an old copy of Floppy Image on my PC.

Looks like archive.org has a download:

If that doesn't work, I'll post my copy somewhere so you can download it (it's shareware).

Thanks! I got it.

It’s 14-days trial version. Is yours too?

No actually, mine is really old... files have a modified date of 2001.  I had forgotten I even had it until digging into old files recently.

My license states that it's freeware. So it looks like Anders Rundegren (the program's author) originally released Floppy Image as freeware but then later added features and re-released it as shareware.

Rundegren's site is dead now, but you can still download the 2001 freeware version on archive.org:

I believe that's the version I used successfully.  Seems worth a try!

Obviously this is what had happened. Mine is version 2.3. What is yours? Can you post it someplace to download?

I just created an .imz image of the diskette created on my 01WproX. I’m sooo happy!!!

You have mentioned that you are thinking of the floppy drive simulator. I have tried three different ones from three different sellers and none of them worked on my keyboard. I am waiting for the delivery of another version – from England, multiple lines display window with rotary controller. Should be getting it within the week. If it works, I’ll post the details. I corresponded with the seller and he said he has one installed on his 01W – working.

Mine is 1.5.2, from November 2001. I'll post it with some instructions later, and will let the list know.

Did you try writing your .imz to another disk to confirm it worked in your Korg?

Finally, I have installed USB Floppy Emulator on my 01WproX!

I attempted to install emulators from three different places, with three-digit screens, with little analog window and text information – all gave me similar error messages.
Eventually I found on ebay place in England, which sells modified GOTEK emulator: six different models, all of them with two- or three-line display window (some of them color display), three of them with rotary controller. I bought the one with three-line color display and rotary controller. It came with 16GB USB thumb drive preloaded with a lot of stuff! You can have multiple folders and subfolders on it, each with many floppy images. The buttons and the rotary knob allow you to find images in any folder.
It’s FANTASIC unit! Installation was no-brainer. If the ribbon cable is plugged in the wrong way – you are getting a message on little screen telling you to reverse it.
And delivery to US was very fast – about ten days!

cpmagneticmedia - the person that modified and programmed the GOTEK unit puts on the USB drive hundreds of sound disks and midi files. You can browse folders using rotary controller and two buttons.

The support is also great. You get immediate support when contacted the seller through email.

If interested, you can find these emulators on ebay:
