PSK31 is dead. Everyone is using FT8 now.

 

Sending PSK31 isn’t too hard to do, decoding it is a trick to do with a simple, low speed processor.

wish the digital screen I wonder if there is a possiblity of psk31 capability?  Maybe thru bluetooth and external keyboard?  I never did get the psk31 upgrade for my ATS-4b.

I just discovered something call a “compander”. Basically, it compress or expands the dynamic range of an audio signal. Looks like just what I need for an AGC circuit. Gonna have to get one to try out.

Great idea to support Steven in his efforts!

It can even be thought of partial solutions:

We formerly had a very successful action with a "group buy" that allowed many of us to build the MTR5 on 80m. Well, I know that this group-buy was the effort of one single person and I doubt that that person would do it again. Even now, years after this action I still feel indebted to this person and can not show enough my respect for what has been done. I think of this and sent blessings each time I tune my MTR5 to 80m!!!

But what if the action would be better coordinated? Just let Steven do the PCB's, the firmware and maybe kit those hard-to-get parts. And then find somebody to kit the resistors, the inductors, the semiconductors, the hardware... and the load is distributed on more shoulders. We are a group here, aren't we? The individual price would probably go up because of the multiple shipments to pay for...  I am too far away to volunteer, but I would if I could. Most of the parts can be found in the net coming from that remote BY land.

Another option would be for Steven just to kit the items named above and for us to see and look each on himself for the rest of the parts. After all, several of us (me included) have happily built the coaster-board for the SodaPop Rig using self provided parts. At least for me, this action has enriched  the relationship I developed to the rig by me having to caress EACH part separately, think twice of it function and thirce if I can not replace it with a nearby value of which I happen to have some in the bin!

Sure I would prefer to get a complete kit from Steven, but If he would do again a very limited run with restrictions implied and I would get none, if he would care to make some, a couple, a dozen of PCB sets more than needed for the run, I would be glad to grab the PCB's and try to populate them on my own. I would take them with a hand-kiss even if they were the result of a misshap like those coaster-boards were, needing some flubby brain work to fix.

PS: wishing it had more bands, just say two, even as modules, should be forbidden by the group rules... ;-).  But so: let us start a pool: which band would you want your V5 to live on? Me.. I would love it on 17 aaand 30m... Uuups, I did it again.

Hi Steven,
probably you already found a solution for a volume control pot with a lower profile. In this case, my 2 cents here is obsolete. But if still searching: maybe it would make sense to choose another option to adjust the volume, not by a potentiometer having a steady, continuous adjustement, but by using a BCD switch with several fixed resistors, more like a step-attenuator.

You yourself were the person that taught me the fact that for field day use rotary adjustments are NOT well suited. The rotary tune knob is enough exception from this rule.

And if there would be some sort of an AGC behind the audio (at least like in the fine old world of the ATS3x era), well then any adjustment of the level would be obsolete: only some rough level-setting-impedance-adaptor to suit different types of earbuds would be necessary on a set-and-forget basis. And this could be done by some BCD switch hidden somewhere at the side, either with primitive jumpers or with tiny sliders like the PC had to set the interrupt vectors.

Just thinkig loud. Fine project you have there again!

All getting very exciting now Steve.. the idea of kitting so many permonth till the demand falls seems sensible and realistic vis a vis demands on your time.

The radio itself is looking very good...the inclusion of a screen really shows how far radio tech has come. On my bench I have a marconi 1155/1154 pair.  Almost  (almost) 100 years old and going well, but that 100 year gap between them and yours really highlights how far in some ways we have come.  Yet both radios use electromagnetic waves and both use Morse.  It makes you think.

The top PCB (front panel) sits on top of the tin. It’s the distance below the bottom of the panel which is important.

 

Anyway, the problem has been solved.

Doesn't look like the top PCB is doing much.  Just order it in thinner material?  If that would mean higher costs I guess it wouldn't be worth it, but half thickness stuff would likely be plenty strong enough.

Yes, I added a ‘386 after burner. All kinds of audio now. The volume control needs to be before this or it will be driven into clipping with strong signals.

 

I’m still on the fence about adding level limiting, other then the clipping diodes on the first audio stage. But I reduced the gain of that stage so they may not actually be needed now.

 

I just got the receiver working this afternoon. Once I play with it for a while I’ll make up my mind if level limiting is needed or just be quick with the volume control.
