Slop Bucket 20 BFO adjustment

Hello all.
I finally got a chance to finish my 20 meter Slop Bucket today (SN #21). Haven't checked the transmit yet but I've been playing with the receiver. I calibrated with a frequency counter (CAL-A) without any issue. Even though the band is weak I was able to copy a few QSOs while tuning around the band. It hears well under -100 dBm from my HP signal generator. 

I wanted to try and adjust the BFO to see if I could improve the sound of the SSB audio. I went to that cal function (bF0), but as soon as I turn the encoder even one click, the signal I was listening to disappears. I powered off without saving and the radio came back up and was receiving signals again.

I put the frequency counter on TP1 and TP2 before I started the bfo adjustment and had 9.000920 MHz on TP1 and 23.160940 MHz on TP2. One click of the encoder and they go to 9.000920 MHz on TP1 and  9.000900 on TP2. Strangely, when I adjust the encoder, the frequency on TP2 changes. I have no idea why the LO would switch from 23 MHz to 9 MHz during the bfo adjustment.

I thought that maybe something was going on with the analog switch, but looking at the test points with a scope showed nice square waves, so my frequency counter wasn't being fooled. Could it be soldering of the Si5351? I would think that it wouldn't work at all if that was messed up.

This was a fun kit to build. Surface isn't as hard as it looks.

Anyway, if anyone has some advice I'm all ears.

I received a dirt-cheap USB camera yesterday that is designed for taking close-up pics of tiny objects. It would have come in handy back when I was building my ATS-3B:

The only way I could get a decent encoder for my Atlas210 project is to make one using
slotted wheel and optical interrupters.  Smaller than commercial but larger than common.

I happen to have three types of china encoders two with detents and one without.
The two with detents have different rates one being more steps per detent.

I also have a few commercial optical that output pulse per position change
and a direction signal.  They are 400 pulses per turn and direction changes with
rotation direction.   I used a bunch of them years back for a non Arduino CNC project.

I have to agree with Dale, my X1M had the same problem with the original
encoder and after replacing it with a known reliable source it now works
fine. In my work I use only optical encoders but unfortunately in most of
the small radios for ham use they are too big and don't fit.

something else, the name of which escapes me at the moment. Anyway,
both work but one will advance on every other click rather then on
every click.
If the encoder only moves in one direction, that means the processor
is not sensing the other channel. Check the connection and if this if
for the Slop Bucket, check the diodes in series with the connections
to the encoder. One may have come loose.

Even from Mouser, they are almost free and at least one has assurance that they passed QC from Bournes, Grayhill, Alps and others.

NOt all encoders are the same I suspect one of two things.

Wrong number of steps by the encoder. 

Or you broke a land and have a missing input to the chip.

At the extreme while working on it you blew the chips input.

The 30m band is only Secondary use for the Amateur Radio Service, and the IARU strongly recommends against any wide band modes including SSB on 30m, and allows this only for sub-Saharan Africa and only during local day time. No SSB signal from Sub Saharan Africa local day time will be heard outside of Sub-Saharan Africa.

On the other hand the Wireless Institute of Australia allows SSB to be used 10115-10140 at all times of the day and night.

The main problem is a 30M version would need another IF frequency. 9 MHz is too close to filter out. I can use 9 MHz for 20 and 40, so that will be the two options for the next batch.

You would need an SSB rig for any of the "soundcard" digi modes currently permitted on 30 mtrs as well.....
