Ruckus ZoneFlex ZF7762-S 802.11 WiFi routers

Stuart - N3GWG

Edited

Listmembers / Clubmembers,

I want to first say that I wish everyone a very happy, healthy, safe and thug free holiday season!

Some several years ago Tim gave away some 802.11 access points at a meeting (Ruckus ZF7762-S models) that had been taken out of service around Philadelphia (likely from Philadelphia's Earthlink days). I obtained several of these routers and they sat around for a while...until now! I took one apart and was able to find which two pins on the board are for serial TX and RX to the board (granted an RS-232 to TTL level converter was needed to access the serial data), I have its console! This allowed me to capture the full console output upon boot up and learn the partition scheme of the firmware non-volatile memory. Hom hum, so what you say? Well, firstly thesew devices runs Linux on them and secondly that means that I ought to be able to get OpenWRT running on it, and if I can do that then getting AREDN firmware running on it would be the next leap! Now granted these routers are N routers but they are quite capable as I believe they meet the 80MHz or 160MHz bandwidth capabilities for WiFi. By the way, these routers can run on 12V or on Power over Ethernet too! I also believe that the Atheros chipset they have in them is capable of 802.11r/k/v/w and 802.11s also!

More to come soon!

Don,

I’m not sure what you mean by kicked out.
The PWA UHF Fusion repeater, 448.225, is rarely down. The Fusion room also rarely has a problem.
The repeater is in AMS mode.
The repeater and Wires-X are open except for 2 Japanese rooms we have blocked.
Wires-X / Fusion have DG-ID set to 0 which is the default.
There is a 1 hour time out on the Wires-X which will return the Wires-X back to the PWA home room of 21349 if it was on another room.
The repeater is a Pennwireless Club repeater.

Other than that I’m not sure what the problem could be.

This is a challenging subject Glen (KC3INP - PWA net manager).  Several of us have the Fusion radios and PWA has both the Fusion repeater (448.225) and the Wires-x box located in Roslyn.  This equipment is up and running 24/7 but is so lightly used the club might do better by promoting some other type service at the 440 machine. Maybe - but let's try a Fusion net one more time.

A couple of us have come up with the idea of running a Fusion net on Sunday nights but we're unsure what time??  Then Howard (N3FEL) stepped forward and said "how 'bout only once per month" on the first Sunday of the month.  I think we're ready to give it a trial run this Sunday (Dec 5th) at 8pm.  This will be on the W3SK 440 Fusion repeater and we will be operating in digital or DN mode because the Wires-x box is set to digital only. The line above the DN means your radio is in AMS - please select the DN without the line so your radio is not automatically switching back to FM. Remember, Wires-x is digital.

Anyone out there with a Wires-x box (HRI-200) is welcome to join -- our Yaesu room #21349.  I will have the K3PDR repeater/ Wires-x linked in (447.475) and also try to link in the Phil-Mont repeater (444.800). We'll see how well this works.

There is a Western Penna Fusion group that goes by the name of Keystone West -- now called Keystone Wide because they have a couple of repeaters connecting in from Eastern Penna.  Yaesu room #60328.  Problem is, they run their net at the same time as PWA -- both at 8pm Sunday nights.  We will eventually connect there on Sunday night, but lets try our own group first.  https://www.w3pie.org/index.php/wires-x-keystone-wide/

I will run the regular 2m net at 8 o'clock.  (146.79 Pl 131.8). With a limited number of check-ins, the 2m net will probably run only a half hour.

Subject: Re: PWA-Technet: Fusion net discussion

With a limited number of check-ins, the 2m net will probably run only a half hour.

bruce, hello, and thanks for the reply,,,i was wondering  if  it was possible to be timed out,  but  ive never been able to have control of it  for more then a few minutes,,,

I always had a thought that it  was blocked for use in to the rooms,as if im able to get in one, it kicks you back to the main call sign room, i havent  tried it  in a while from work with the HT,,,but  I have from home in  levittown,

some times its stays in the room of choice then switches back to the main call sign room,  is it  possible that it  switches back to the main room if the one,   ( me) selecting the room has not  transmitted in the room in a selected amount of time ?   ide love to be able to listen to fusion/wires X on my  HT  from work, just down the street from the repeater,,,all tho transmitting at work is not an  option for me im too busy,

thanks for your reply,,,,,,don  kc3igj

just my 2 cents, don  KC3IGJ  the 448.225 wiresX doesnt  seem to be on or in a mode to be used at  all times, maybe you  have to be a member of a group ???  ive tried to use it  many times, only to be what seems to be  timed out and  the room selected shut down, I work not far from the repeater site, and  am in a block/metal building with lots of  electronics blocking my HT  from useage  even to listen to other repeaters,,,,all tho im close enough to the 448.225  to be able to log in and listen to fusion/wires x    but seem to get  kicked out, I have no clue what the setting are on the fusion repeater, but  it seems who ever owns it  doesnt  like it  used for fusion >????????

thanks  don     kc3igj

Re: Fw: PWA-Technet: Fusion net discussion

Sounds good-will try to make the net Sunday, though I’m not sure I’ll make it back in time. We’re attending a Messiah sing-along and then going to dinner afterwards.

Is there a PDR Jitsi meeting on Monday? I didn’t see a notification the last couple of months.

The Phil-Mont Mobile Radio Club will hold their 25th annual auction at
the
Ben Wilson Senior Center on Wednesday evening January 12th starting at
7pm
-- setup at 6pm.
Auction flyer / seller sheet is
here;http://phil-mont.org/auction/2022/Auction_SalesSheet.pdf

There will be a area for club donations.  Bring your unwanted bits and
pieces to the auction and place in this section -- there will be a cash

Penn Wireless will hold their general meeting this coming Monday evening at approximately 7:30pm. PWA will hold their business meeting just prior to the general meeting -- at 7pm.  Non-members are asked not to check-in until after 7:30.  See my note on Zoom and the link below...

Presentation on Zoom;
The guest speaker this month is Alan Wolke (W2AEW), ARRL Technical Coordinator for NNJ.  Alan will talk about impedance and the Smith Chart.  I suggest we watch one of his YouTube videos to get a bit more familiar with the material.  His presentation is intended to bring us "up to speed" before we buy the Nano VNA.

Alan has a YouTube channel with over 100k viewers; most topics are on electronics and amateur radio.  Here's his channel home page;  https://www.youtube.com/user/w2aew

Here's Alan's Silver YouTube award;  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPM8CkREAFY
Quote;
Very honored to have earned this Silver Creator Award from YouTube! Of course this wouldn't be possible with the more than 157,000 subscribers that have contributed to nearly 20 million views of my videos. I humbly thank you for your support over the years!
Unquote.

Note there will be no online "Swap Meet on Zoom" this month -- look for the next Swap Meet to occur sometime the week between Christmas and New Years.  Probably the middle of the week - not the usual 4th Monday of the month.

Mark  WA3QVU

FYI...
PWA recently purchased their own Zoom account for club use -- we no longer use Steve's (KB3ORG) business account.  So please bear with us for the first time using this new account.  I have entrusted this job to our computer geeks Bruce (WA3ZPC) and Matt (KC3RLG).  Will try to get things setup so you can come directly into the meeting.  ie: no gate keeper and no one outside the US allow into the meeting.  This setup worked out pretty well in past months for our Zoom Swap Meet.

Here's the link to join a Zoom meeting;
