Subject: Final HHW Drop Off Locations for 2021

Not sure if I'll make the next hamfest for the area (Red Rose Repeater Hamfest in New Holland - Oct 2nd), but I know I'll have items to take to a Household Hazardous Waste drop off before the end of year.  That includes the longer florescent tubes (2ft and up), old gasoline or other car stuff from the garage, oil base paints and varnish, thermostats with mercury bulbs, etc.

The HHW drop off people apparently do NOT take electronics or smoke detectors.  They are making it difficult to "not just throw it in the trash".  However 611 Metals in Willow Grove do take the old computers and odd pieces of test equipment we've found in recent estates.  611 Metals do charge for TV and oscilloscopes with CRT tubes.  (about 80 cents / pound)
http://www.611metals.com/

Since everything is now made of plastic, I'm in the habit of taking apart the plastic housing for hedge trimmers, electric shavers, old fans, etc and throwing the plastic parts into the recycle bin the township provides.  Municipalities nowadays provide several trash cans or bins on wheels - one specifically for cans, glass and plastics.  One man drives the truck, which is equipped with a long articulated arm that reaches out to grab the can, then swings up and over the truck to dump the contents into the trash truck.  Read that half or one third the labor costs.

Read the pdf here, many drop offs now have registered times;

We attended the Gloucester County ARC Hamfest in Mullica Hill and had a freebie / donation table setup in recognition of several local hams who have died from Lou Gehrig's disease. Allan (W3AEH), Denise (KB3ANO) and Dave (WI3Y). All money in the coffee can at end of day goes to the ALS Foundation.
We collected $175... thank you all..!!

Hurricane Ida had quite a few surprises for us here in the Philly area including several tornadoes, one here in Ft Washington, but the worst of which hit the Mullica Hill area.  The Gloucester County ARC lost 2 of the big towers at the ham station next the 4H Fair Grounds where the hamfest is held each year.  The club started a Go Fund Me page and has almost hit the 10,000 dollar goal.  Attachment is my pic showing the one tower folded in half.

The next hamfest in the Southeast Pa area is Red Rose Repeater Association held on Saturday October 2nd at the Garden Spot Fire and Rescue Station, New Holland, Pa. Vendors at 7am and general public at 8am.

See Google maps for location;

I understand there will be no Sellersville Hamfest this year - RF Hill will move to a new venue for 2022.  However Paul (N3TMX) and I will pickup the PWA "Swap Net on Zoom" probably the last week of October -- so get your skeletons ready.  We don't have details worked out just yet, but we may alternate months with the PWA general meetings held on the 4th Monday of the month.  ie: PWA meetings in September, November, January, etc. (always on a Monday)  Swap Net held the 4 week (Monday or Tuesday) in October, December (after x-mas), February, etc.  This is tentative...  but working the Swap Net twice a month was just too much.

Joe Di Bartolo (KC2FSB) is making a last minute plee for volunteers to help with the MS-150 "City to Shore" bike ride.  We have lost several communicators this year and need to bring on-board "new people".  If you can find the time to volunteer, please join the group.

The Philadelphia Multiple Sclerosis Society depend on local Ham Radio operators to do the job of radio communications.  This event is the largest in the area with approximately 5 to 7,000 bike riders showing up early Saturday morning at the Patco Woodcrest Station and heading down to Ocean City NJ.  The event is held the last weekend of September (25th and 26th) and usually involves a Friday setup day for several of us.  The riders stay overnight at hotels in Ocean City and come back to Woodcrest Station on Sunday.

If anyone wishes to join me Friday afternoon ?? I usually head down about 12 noon to setup the radio equipment while others setup APRS radios used to track the SAG vehicles.  The South End is upstairs at the Ocean City Music Pier where the MS officials (ride director) and the APRS units are tracked. The North End (where I go) is located just across Woodcrest Road from the station.  I go down on Friday and setup two masts, one with a 2m / 440 antenna and the second with a GMRS antenna.  Extra people are needed to jockey the vans around the lot and tag the keys so they don't get mixed up Saturday morning.  Watch or help install the APRS equipment and make sure it's working.  And help with the masts and antennas.
I use a Max Gain System push-up mast;  https://mgs4u.com/fiberglass-push-up-masts/

Where most volunteers are needed is ride support;  Joe likes to have a ham operator every mile or two along the route to be eyes and ears for the riders.  On the radio you'll announce your location when you arrive, the first rider through your "spot" and the last rider -- and call in any breakdowns.  Riders are instructed to turn the bike up-side down by the side of the road and wait for the SAG vans.  Always 2 vans, one passenger van for people, one box van for the bikes -- SAG vehicles always travel in pairs.  End of day there's always a follow-up vehicle to release the ham operator.  This is the easiest job in the world.. just sit in your car and call in the rider numbers.

Most people from the Philly area will choose the North End for our route spot.  This will be road intersections or street corners anywhere from Cherry Hill down through Atco to Hammonton NJ where the lunch stop is located.  The route is clearly marked for the cyclists -- communicator volunteers will be given clear directions.  If you have a house at the shore, you can select the South End.  These are from Hammonton down through Mays Landing and on to Ocean City.  Saturday route spots start early in Cherry Hill because the riders start at 6 or 6:30am.  Route spots down below the Hammonton lunch break start later.  Reverse is true for Sunday.

I don't know if Joe has any openings, but communicators are also used in Staff Cars.  These are usually the small Subaru Outback wagons that travel the route and make pit stops along the way for riders who are in trouble with break downs, having health issues -- some are older riders or riders with MS -- they keep a close eye on these riders.  Or road closures due to vehicle accidents.  These communicators can be non-hams using GMRS radio.

In previous years we've needed volunteers to be loggers.  This can be a non-ham operator with typing skills;  these people sit by a radio listening to either a ham repeater or GMRS radio and type all traffic coming over the radio.  The computer is internet connected and goes through a server to the Ocean City location where it pops up on a screen and the information is used by the ride director.  Basically it's a time stamp on radio traffic, when and where did it happen.

So whether you're a Ham, SWL or just interested in the hobby, your skills are needed somewhere along the route for keeping the riders safe.  I hope you can join us.

A  DESPERATE  PLEE  FOR  HELP

We are only 3 weeks away from the event.  YES – JUST 21 DAYS.

This past week we received enough volunteer registrations to only cover 4 route check points.  This still puts us in the need for 25 to 30 more HAM volunteers.

Ladies and Gentlemen !!!!!!!!!!
I don’t know what else to do to get out the word, to bring in additional volunteers.  I am shocked that so many of our volunteers from the last 5 years have not come back.  If some of you folks have complaints and criticisms on any of us, the event, or how we try to support the event fully, please contact us so that we can understand and hopefully clear things up.

This is probably the last week that we have to get the volunteers we need, so that we can start assignments.  Remember, even if you have already signed up, you are receiving this email to help spread the word.

Please put the 25th and 26th of September on your schedule to come out and support the 2021 Ride MS – City to Shore as the public service event that is supported fully, to ensure the safety and communications to help the all too many folks living with Multiple Sclerosis.

Please sign up at:               https://forms.gle/YzGMjT9aMojLA3Xt6

Or email back the attached form as soon as possible.

We look forward to working with as many of you as it takes to support the event fully.

The Hamfest in Mullica Hill New Jersey is still scheduled for next Sunday;  See below and view the pdf Flyer.

Here's a Google Map;  (address is 235 Bridgeton Pike, Mullica Hill, NJ)
https://www.google.com/maps/place/Gloucester+County+fairgrounds/@39.7156859,-75.2141362,564m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x89c6d8f912646861:0x63839733c38e3890!8m2!3d39.7156818!4d-75.2119475

I plan to be there with more odds and ends from the latest estate / clean-out with multiple items located under one of the drive-up pavilions in the back.  One of my tables will be marked "Donation Only" to the ALS Foundation.  Allan (W3AEH) died from complications of Lou Gehrig's disease - family has instructed that all money will go to ALS.  We collected $250 at the Kimberton Hamfest back in July -- let's see if we can do the same here at Mullica Hill.

Mark  WA3QVU

PS:
As far as I know, the tornado damage caused by hurricane Ida did not damage the 4H / Gloucester County Fairgrounds in Mullica Hill.  Here's a quick video of Marvin Lane located on one side of Bridgetown Pike -- the Fairgrounds are on the opposite side of the road.  Miraculously no one was killed - the houses are ripped apart.

Re: DMR problems

Even stranger, I can get in ok from a Fusion radio to the DMR bridge in Openspot3, but not direct DMR either via the repeater or hotspot.

DMR problems

Anyone having issues transmitting on DMR Brandmeister servers lately? I seem to have been partially blocked for the last few days.
I can receive OK on my hotspot, and connect or disconnect talk groups, but no one is hearing me on any of these methods on talk group 3142, 31360 or the Parrot test group
      - local Waterford Works WR3IRS repeater. I can't quite hit K3PDR consistently.
      - Openspot3
       - Clearnode (All-Star to DMR analog bridge using DVSwitch)
       - DroidStar

I've had almost the same code plug for a year now on any Anytone 878, and it was working earlier this month, though I heard that statewide talk groups are blocked on DVSwitch. I checked with one of the Brandmeister
admins, and he says that I'm not blocked, as the connect/disconnect commands are getting through, but he got very grouchy when I mentioned that I tested with DroidStar, as a few of the admins there are not crazy about non-RF connections to DMR. Any ideas what could be wrong?

I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the below, but there may be some who have first hand information.

Jim  WA3EHD

From: Steve Martin <sem7388@...>
Subject: Ham Radio Manufacturer News

Kenwood is pretty much out of the ham radio market, due to inability to get parts.
They have no ham mobile radios left.  That chip factory that burned down made chips that went into all their mobile radios.  They bought what they could find but decided to dedicate that inventory towards building radios for their more profitable commercial line.  For them to reenter the market, they would need to redesign all of their radios.  I imagine that they would have to do this for their commercial line anyway, but the end result is that if they re-enter the ham market,
it will be a year or more from now.  I don’t know what this means for their HF radios, but they haven’t had much of a presence there in a while.

Yaesu had to drop their most popular HT due to parts shortages from the same plant.  The FT3D is also discontinued due to parts shortages.  There is a FT5 coming out that will be here shortly; it will be able to decode digital on two bands at once.

Icom seems to be doing well.  For instance, HRO has 500 IC705 radios in inventory. Icom projected sales of 20,000 for this radio and ordered parts accordingly.   Icom is redesigning their DSTAR repeater line but no word on when they will be available.

The only good news in this is that this seems to be due to parts shortages rather than lack of demand.  If the market still exists maybe Kenwood will come back.

Steve K3KQ
