Philly Swap Net on Zoom - Tuesday at 7:30 pm

From: Mark Hinkel <mrhinkel@...> To: Mark Hinkel <mrhinkel@...> Sent: Sun, May 16, 2021 11:47 pm Subject: Philly Swap Net on Zoom - Tuesday at 7:30 pm To all Hams in the Delaware Valley,
We are planning to run 2 more Swap Nets; Tomorrow
night May 18th, then June 1st, the first Tuesday in June.
Paul and I will then take a break during the Summer months. With the RF
Hill hamfest on hold again this year, we plan to pickup the Zoom
meetings in October. FYI; We now know that both Kimberton on Saturday July 17th and
Mullica Hill on Sunday September 12th "are scheduled for 2021".
http://www.marc-radio.org/
http://www.w2mmd.org/
The Zoom "Swap Net" is scheduled to
begin at 7:30 pm on the First and Third Tuesday evenings of the month.
See link at the bottom of this email.
Before the Zoom meeting tomorrow night, let me share
a few items that I have not found the time to take pics and get up on
the PWA "For Sale" page. Glenn (KC3INP) has an almost new Icom 2m
mobile, the IC-2300. Another PWA member has a Kenwood 2m mobile the
TM-281. The Kenwood was a door prize at one of our holiday dinners a
couple of years back and has never been out of the box. Either one,
$100. Digging through the estate stuff, I found a couple of Heathkit
indoor/outdoor digital thermometers and another box with the temp
probes. No idea if they are working. We also have two smaller Variacs
(maybe 2 amp) already mounted in Bud boxes
with cord and plug. The on/off switch is 3 position with center off.
My guess is this operates the zero to line voltage in one position --
zero to maybe 135 volts in the other position.
Then there's the box in my attic from my father's
collection; maybe 10 rolls of resistance wire probably came from IRC
down on Broad Street when they moved operations down to Boone, NC. Each
spool is marked resistance per foot. Let me know your needs... Free.
Look on the PWA "For Sale" page. Note, if you see non-amateur radio advertising up there go to the last page and view them backwards. We occasionally have a spammer on the For Sale pages.
https://pennwireless.org/adverts/
I ask everyone to take a full sheet of paper - 8-1/2
x 11 - and write your first name, call sign and either your email
address or a phone number. Please show it to us, when you display your
equipment. This will allow interested parties to contact you off the
Zoom meeting.
I will go over the rules we have used for the PWA "on the air" Swap Net.
1; No more than 3 items per person / per night. There's always next week to bring up 3 more.
1a; Estates may show up to 6 items per night.
2; No up front costs. If your item does sell ?? then the seller will make a donation to the club.
3; As per Fcc rules, no haggling on Zoom. Mention the asking price and haggle on the phone.
4;
Make up a quickie email listing your items for that week. Nothing long
and drawn out. Just the 3 items and be prepared to send it to anyone
who asks... not only people on the PWA email list.
5; No number 5, four is enough.Mark WA3QVU
Thank you to Steve (KB3ORG - PWA President) for
allowing us to use his paid Zoom account so we don't run up against the
40 minute time-out.

Centralia mine fire anniversary special event station
Walter J. Skavinsky (KB3SBC)
The Education Alliance for Amateur radio (KE3AAR) will be operating a special event station on May 22, 2021 in recognition of the 59th Anniversary of the Centralia, Pennsylvania mine fire. The stations call sign will be W3C and the operation that day will be portable from a location in the Borough of Centralia.
The Centralia mine fire is a coal-seam fire that has been burning underneath the borough of Centralia, Pennsylvania, United States, since at least May 27, 1962. Its original cause is still a matter of debate. It is burning in underground coal mines at depths of up to 300 feet (90 m) over an 8-mile (13 km) stretch of 3,700 acres (15 km2). At its current rate, it could continue to burn for over 250 years. It has caused most of the town to be abandoned: the population dwindled from around 1,500 at the time the fire started to 5 in 2017, and most of the buildings have been razed. (1)
Operation will be sequential on 20/40/10/80 meters, using Voice, Digital (PSK31/FT-8), and D-star reflector 63B. Operation will be from 1500 hrs UTC to 2300 Hrs UTC on May 22, 2021.
For questions about the event please contact Bill Stauffer (KA3RMM) james.stauffer@... or Walt Skavinsky (KB3SBC) walter.skavinsky@...

Tom McCullough W1HRO - SK

From: Mark Hinkel <mrhinkel@...> To: Mark Hinkel <mrhinkel@...> Sent: Thu, Apr 22, 2021 9:15 pm Subject: Tom McCullough W1HRO - SK Just heard the news this week, Tom (W1HRO) a resident of Ann's Choice in Warminster, passed away on Christmas Eve.
Tom was a member of the radio club at Ann's Choice, Warminster ARC, K3PDR and the Phil-Mont Mobile Radio Club. Locally, he also supported Bucks County ARES. He was very much deaf in his latter years but also very sharp minded even in his 90's. He learned to operate the digital modes that used a computer screen rather than audio modes.
He had many stories including his Scout Troop's attendance at the 1937 Boy Scout Jamboree in Washington DC where FDR visited. https://oa-bsa.org/history/national-jamborees
Conversation usually rolls around to a question about "How 'bout your children? Are they Hams?" He did not have children, and said his first wife died; I was expecting a story about her having cancer or some other disease. No, he told the story about driving on icy New England roads and the accident where his car slid off the highway and into the trees. (his wife did not survive) However, he later married Doris who had children from a previous marriage. They were very good to Tom, taking care of him at the retirement center even after Doris passed away.
The picture is a rather young looking Tom and his wife copied from Facebook. (see attach)

Thomas Rougier McCullough, of Ann's Choice Community, Warminster passed away Thursday, December 24, 2020. Tom
was born December 18, 1922 in the Philippines, where his parents were
stationed with the US Army. Still with the Army, they moved back to the
United States where his brother, Richard, was born in 1926. Both Tom and
his brother graduated from The Valley Forge Military Academy. Following
this Tom entered the University of Pennsylvania class of 1946 with his
studies interrupted by World War II where he served honorably in the
Battle of the Bulge. His brother graduated from West Point and lost his
life serving in the Korean Conflict in 1953.
Tom spent many years
working for the Lever Brothers Company in various positions from the
east to the west coasts while ending his career in a corporate
engineering position in their New York City corporate offices. Following
his retirement from Lever, he assumed a position with Arnold Bakery
corporation in Stamford, CT. Stamford was his home for many years until
the move to Ann's Choice in Warminster, PA.
Due to Tom's love of
golf, he spent many winters in his Tucson, AZ home. Tom's other
interests were Ham Radio, Barbershop Chorus, world travel, St. Luke
Episcopal Church in Newtown, Photography and computer editing of family
photographs and various charities.
His step children William King, Penelope Carboni, Richard King, Robert King, 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren brought him much pleasure. Tom outlived his first wife Jacquelyn, his second wife Doris, and also his parents Earl and Blanche McCullough.

who asks... not only people on the PWA email list.
5; No number 5, four is enough. Our objective is to offer a virtual place to sell
items including estate radios, test equipment, radio parts and tools to
local radio operators and builders in the tri-state area -- and not
place items up on eBay, QTH, QRZ or other online auction houses where we
need to pack and ship across country. Sell local and make arrangements
off the Zoom for local pickup. We do not offer any warranty or
guarantees of items sold other than "hey it's working" or "no it's not
working". Buyer beware and please don't shoot the messenger. We are
only here to offer an alternative to Hamfests until we get beyond the
current virus. We now see the Sussex Hamfest in Delaware is cancelled
as well as Warminster and Sellersville. Still in the planning stages
are Mullica Hill (Sept) and Kimberton (July).

Thank you to Steve (KB3ORG - PWA President) for
allowing us to use his paid Zoom account so we don't run up against the
40 minute time-out.

Hill) and I have been selling off the Allen Lipkin (W3AEH) estate. Most
of these sales have been local occurring at each of our homes. These
are individual sales with mask on or lately the buyer tells us he's had
the Covid shot(s). ie; not 6 or more people hanging around the table as
we often see at hamfests.
In addition, on March 12th Jayson and I took a number of items
out to the Reading Radio Club meeting held at the Berks County
Agricultural Center in Bernville (West side of Reading). Reading RC
have been back to meeting in person mainly because of the venue; a very
large auditorium at the Agg Center with tables and chairs spread out
more than 6ft apart. Money collected that night was $66, with $7 going
to the RRC.
We still have several items pending ($100 maybe?) and quite a few items to go thru before we can see light at the end of the tunnel. Sarah (the widow) will have Allen's friend Ron Cohen (K3ZKO) come in and go thru multiple boxes in the basement front room. There could be more radio items there but more likely it's just personal papers and maybe manuals. We'll see..??
OK... Can I have a drum roll please;
Dave has collected $400 in Telford with $40 going toward RF Hill.
I have collected $512 in Willow Grove with $52 going toward PWA.
Somewhere in the numbers I'll pull $10 to go toward Warc.
As I count the cash (less club commissions) I currently have $820 which as per Sarah's request will go to the ALS Foundation.
Thank you all for your "totally out of season non-hamfest" purchases. We could not have raised this amount of money without you. I will post a new notice for the "Philly Swap Net" on Zoom to be held this Tuesday evening at 7:30.
