Date

Five County Digital Training Net Tues 7 pm Nov17 ON 146.835 PL 88 Eagleville

Jim Fisher AJ3DI

**NOTE** Digital MODE in analog FM not digital VOICE(D-Star, DMR and Fusion)

Note repeater/frequency CHANGE: 146.835 PL 88 Eagleville

Please pass on this traffic to local clubs

Tonight's Five County Digital Training Net will be on the
MONTGOMERY county repeater: 146.835 PL 88 Eagleville

This net focuses on training folks how to use sound-card bases modes
for emergency communications: FLDIGI, Winlink, etc.

November 17
Net opens 7 pm for training in FLDIGI / FLMSG / FLAMP
Checkin mode will be announced: likely THOR 22 but check at 7 pm
Traffic mode: will vary Keep your RxID on MFSK128 typical
The high-speed 8PSK 500F mode works well for most ops

I like to keep the radio's own SQUELCH turned OFF so you won't miss
the start of the mode while squelch opens.
Do not use FLDIGI's own SQUELCH option (just ignore any gibberish text
in the Rx window)

Before the net ends, I would like to test one of the FLDIGI ALPHA
(test) modes that was available on an earlier FLDIGI alpha version:
MFSK32wide And MFSK64wide (2 kHz wide)
There were earlier reports of these two modes (specialized for FM) not
working, but I found I could use them between my two radios (simplex).
They are not designed for SSB.

These are extremely robust modes (that means they are slow) with both
a frequency and a time redundancy (like MT63).
They may work with "acoustic coupling" (mic and speaker) and so might
replace MT63-2K (a phase shift mode using 64 carriers) for those
setups without a sound card. I do not recommend acoustic coupling - a
simple shielded audio cable from a headphone or speaker jack on radio
to the MIC in on a laptop is much more robust.

If you can't find MFSK32wide don't worry about it.
It is NOT included in the latest FLDIGI release.
I only need a few ops to test these non-standard modes.
They work fine with SignaLinks and Rigblasters on FM and the repeater
audio should handle this mode easily.

Please prepare some traffic: ARC (American Red Cross) forms are very
useful, as are Custom or Severe weather reports, CSV spreadsheets, and
images. Just prepare something for practice.

Net control may not be me tonight, so listen at 7 pm for instructions
by PHONE on FM. We have been getting good participation from multiple
counties surrounding Phila, as well as a NJ station.

Looking forward to continuing success on the MontCo repeater while the
Bucktown and Roxborough 147.270 is undergoing tests.

GM from West Chester

Many of us who volunteer for the MS-150 "City to Shore" bike ride every September remember Kathy well.  She handled registration for the volunteer ham radio operators.  I've known she was not well for the past coupe of months -- had a blockage / blood clot in her leg and the doctors had her bed bound for months while trying to dissolve the clot.  My wife and I, plus Adam (K3JCP) went to the Mullica Hill Hamfest in mid-September and visited Kathy on the way home that afternoon.  Her Facebook page says she also had cancer and kidney failure.  That I did not know...

Her father, Rev Ed Cook, passed away about 2 or 3 years ago in his 90's.  I believe I'm remembering the father fought in WW-2 and went to college on the GI bill.  Then taught at a high school in California before he went to seminary school.  Does anyone else remember the story??

Kathy's obituary lists a viewing held on Friday evening and the funeral is on Saturday -- both at St Luke's Episcopal Church in Woodstown, NJ 08098.  This is the location where we packed many, many MS-150 packets for all the volunteers.

New post on ARRL EPA SECTION
Nov. 1st at 8 PM: The Premiere of “What Hams Do – Minorities in Amateur Radio” by EPA Admin

Set your alarms for Sunday evening, November 1st, at 8 PM ET for the Premiere of “What Hams Do – Minorities in Amateur Radio.”

This is a YouTube Premiere Presentation at: https://youtu.be/H6zVgGGn6N4

Click the link now to get a reminder. Subscribe to the EPA-ARRL YouTube channel and click the notification bell so you don’t miss future uploads.

In  a YouTube Premiere, chat is live, and the video will be available exactly at 8 PM, November 1st. Individuals featured in the program will be available to join in chat conversations as the program plays. The video will be permanently available after the premiere event.

This second TV show in the What Hams Do series by the Eastern Pennsylvania Section of the ARRL focuses on minority participation in Amateur Radio in America.

Minorities are not only a vibrant part of American life, but they are also a dynamic force in Amateur Radio. This episode of What Hams Do explores the myths and facts about race in ham radio. Four minority Amateur Radio operators in Southeastern Pennsylvania describe how they've connected to this amazing hobby and discuss their view of racism in ham radio. Expanding ham radio among members of minority communities is crucial to growth in the hobby and its membership. How do we do that? Four excellent ideas from four unique ham radio operators provide a roadmap to growth.

Meet our guests:

Keith Perry, N3QQZ, an engineer by training and tech company owner, Keith explores his deep relationship with Amateur Radio and the events in his life that pushed him to greater achievement in the hobby.

Clint Beckett, WB3EHB, a Marine Corps veteran, describes early childhood experiences that led him into the hobby as well as well as a career in electronic communications. Clint, as an officer of the predominantly African American Delaware Valley OMIK club (founded nationally in 1952 to promote Amateur Radio in African American communities) has a very positive view of Amateur Radio when it comes to racism.

Janice Winston, KC3ORH, a recently licensed Amateur Radio operator reports on her 17 years of service the Red Cross. Her service minded philosophy is carrying over into her role in ham radio, which she finds a very welcoming community. Janice also has a blueprint for expanding diversity in our Amateur Radio organizations.

Frank (Francisco) Rodriguez, KC3HRS, leads a ham radio on-the-air network that carries messages from disaster impacted Spanish language communities to the rest of the US. The organization, the Pennsylvania Society of Latin American Radio Operators (PASOLA) was born in the midst of Hurricane Maria's devastating impact on the island of Puerto Rico. Beyond that, Frank is a church pastor who has lost close friends and a brother to the COVID-19 pandemic. Caring for the health and welfare not only of his congregants but also of his ham radio community is an essential part of who he is.

Please forward this information to friends, family members, organizations and others who might have an interest in participating in Amateur Radio.

I have taken down the gateway server to reconfigure the host OS.  I am switching the host to Proxmox VE.  This should give us better flexibility to use USB devices, etc..

If all goes well it should be back on site in a week or two.

Hence, there is no D-Star gateway running at this time.  The d-rats server is running again on the old hardware.

Thank you for your patience.

Best regards,

Free IP Phones

I have the following inventory of Cisco IP phones that I would like to find homes for:

1 ea 7970

2 ea 7961

1 ea 7961 missing stand

1 ea 7960 missing stand and handset

1 ea 7912 missing stand

All of these phone require 48volt power sources either through injectors or POE. I have no power supplies available.

All of those phones are capable of configuring for both MESH or Hamshack Hotline connections.

These are available first come first choice at my QTH shown below.

They are available for free.

Please give a call to 215-651-0357 before coming.

I plan to keep them available for about a week and then they will be recycled.

Thanks
