Sticky Trident Manual

Here's the manual for the Trident. It's the first version so feedback is very much welcome. I tried to keep it specific to the mount itself but please let me know if anything could be added to improve it.

Awesome!

Hi Mark,

I think it also a good idea to include the info you have for the controller within the Trident Manual.

This stuff….

Highlights of the JTWstep

  • Low power consumption, depending on load -
    • 2 to 5 watts tracking
    • 6 to 20 watts slewing
  • 12 VDC
  • 256x microstepping
  • Supports absolute encoders
    • BiSS-C, SSI
    • Up to 32 bit
    • 250 kHz readout speed
  • Trinamic motor drivers
    • StealthChop - Silent running
    • Missed step detection
    • CoolStep - Saves energy
    • On-the-fly microstep reduction for fast slewing and fine tracking
    • Plugged into headers & can be easily replaced in the future
  • WeAct BlackPill microcontroller
    • Powerful
    • Cost effective
    • Plugged into headers
  • LOLIN Pro WiFi module
    • Smart web server for tuning parameters without reflashing the controller
    • Plugged into headers
  • On board high precision real time clock & backup battery
  • ST4 Guide Port
  • USB and WiFi connectivity to computer
  • ASCOM and INDI Driver
  • App that turns mobile device into a highly featured hand controller
  • Additional features not relevant to the Trident
    • Can be used with direct drive motors
    • Ra+/Ra-/De+/De-/Ra home & De home sensor inputs

Controller Layout

Connectivity to your computer is best achieved via the USB port but to access the parameter tuning and smart web server you will have to connect via WiFi (also applies to using the mobile app). It should be noted that the controller takes only a few seconds to boot up, you'll hear the motors locking up but the WiFi SSID can take 20-30 seconds to appear in your list of available networks.

The LEDs are pretty self explanatory. Power will illuminate when you plug the mount in (ground breaking stuff!). The tracking LED is a good confirmation that the controller is working properly as the mount starts tracking when powered on & this LED will flash. If you have modified the firmware or applied one of our software updates and this LED is not flashing after a restart you have a clear indication that something went wrong. The alarm LED will illuminate if something is wrong such as a motor overloading or limit is hit.

Good idea, Brendan. I'll put that in. Thanks!

Hi Mark,

It might be wise to also put this link "USING ONSTEP" https://onstep.groups.io/g/main/wiki/3865  which contains relevant information on its use.
I think any Trident user with the OnStep controller should take a look at this group.

Thanks for that link Alain - looks very informative. I also joined the onstep.io group a long time ago....but have not gone back there in the intervening time....I had no interest until now :-)

Brendan.

Looks good! The only thing missing is info for us in the Southern Hemisphere – the Ra direction needs to be reversed in the SWS Config page

Cheers, Mike

In the Manual, maintenance section you state:

"If the mount is stored outdoors or in an unheated observatory and has not been used for a while it's necessary to remove the cover from it and allow it to air out, this should be done at least once a month."

I recommend specifying with a drawing what "cover" you are talking about in order to avoid confusion and issues.

Hi frederico,

Mark in this sentence refers to page 2 of the manual, paragraph 8: "Always cover your equipment with a waterproof cover when not in use if stored
outside or in an unheated observatory/building".
It is therefore necessary to remove the cover from time to time to ventilate.

Alain

Frederico Arez

Yes! That makes more sense now.

Frederico Arez

I recommend adding the motor tunning instructions to the manual

How to do it and what each parameter does.

Also, common troubleshooting procedures.

Mark Woodward

Thanks for the feedback, there's an updated manual being uploaded at the weekend. We also have a German translation thanks to Mario Zauner. Big thanks for that!

👍

Just looking at the manual again this evening and think there is an error or omission here:

Functionality Test
This step is optional but we recommend to quickly test the mount before spending a lot of
time and effort to install the instrumentation
• Install the OnStep mobile app, either OnStep in the Android app store or Gotomote
for iOS
• Ensure the drive of both axes is disengaged and the brakes are on
• Turn the controller on and connect to the WiFi
◦ SSID – 'JTW Trident'
◦ Password – 'password'
• Start the app, turn tracking on and perform some movements using the hand pad
to ensure the motors operate as expected.

You say "Ensure the drive of both axes is disengaged and the brakes are on" but then how can one "perform some movements using the hand pad
to ensure the motors operate as expected."

Brendan.

Brendan Kinch

Sorry - forget that last one - I guess you are saying just to test the motors - but not move anything. OK.....got it.

Brendan.

This might sound stupid but never underestimate pictures that illustrate what you are explaining in a manual to make it more user-friendly.
Setting up in a cold observatory in winter can affect your ability to concentrate :)

Kind regards
