Re: ARES Meeting, Thursday 5/23

Richard Arnold

Full house for the May ARES meeting. Summer Field Day exercise was discussed.

Summer Field Day will be held June 22nd and 23rd at Jackson County Park.

Glad to see regular club members  Jerry, N4JR and Jim, NK3V in attendance and bringing some really good ideas for Field Day to the table.
We will go over the planning from the ARES meeting and continue the discussion at the Regular Club meeting on June14 at Western Sizzlin.

Let's all turn out and make this a great Field Day for our club.

Richard.

June 22nd-23rd is not that far off and we have one ARES meeting and one Regular Club meeting between now and then.

If you have any plans to volunteer to help out with Field Day, I ask that you make every effort to attend this next meeting to discuss preparation, setup and Field Day operation.

Invite a friend to attend so they can learn more about Amateur Radio and ARES.

Hope to see you there, KB4RMA

K4R, Russell Cave Special Event Station. 5/11/19

Richard Arnold

The K4R, Russell Cave Special Event Station activation is now behind us.
We consider it to be a successful outing with 11 club members present, 1 visiting amateur operator and 3 guests and a good time was had by all present.

We began the day at a disadvantage with two members absent due to sickness and a tragic death in the family and rain delays as well.

We knew this activation would be challenging due to the location of Russell Cave in the shadow of the mountain and weather conditions and while we were not able to operate on all bands planned we did achieve 15 contacts on 20 and 40 meters.

Our dedicated radio operators were Mark Pierson, KN4JXL and John Hilliard, K4JCH.

Members present were:
Richard Arnold, K4NHA.
Ben Lowe, K4QF.
Byron Lauderdale, KN4QVD.
Danielle Fuller, KN4SDJ.
Jerry Rossanno, N4JR.
Jim Clifford, NK3V.
John Hillisrd, K4JCH.
Kendall Mashburn, KN4KYX
Kendall's Wife, Brittney Mashburn.
Kendall's Daughter, Piper Masburn.
Mark Pierson, KN4JXL.
Patrick Gifford, KN4BRG.
Tanya Sparkman, KA4TLH.
Visiting Amateur was Chris White, KK4TLK from Whitwell, TN and his Father-in-Law Jerry Godsby that lives in the cove at the cave.

Thanks to all that turned out for this event and to my setup and tear-down crew.

K4NHA.

Russell Cave Special Event Station

Richard Arnold

One week away! Russell Cave Special Event Station.

On May 11, 2019 we will be operating a special event station under the call-sign K4R for the 58th Anniversary of Russell Cave National Monument. We're doing this mostly for fun but to also activate a National Monument which is part of the ARRL National Parks on the Air for those that are chasing those activations.

One Day Event - Saturday, May 11, 2019 - 6 hours total on-air time

Setup Time will be 8:00am at the entrance to Russell Cave
On-Air at 9:00am
Operating SSB, CW, and Digital Modes.
Operating 40m and 20m.
12v DC available (any radio's will need to use DC)
Shutdown at 3:00pm
Packed up and out of the Park by 4:00pm

There are many rules and laws in place since this land is a Federal Archaeology site. No vehicles can be on the grass at any time, no ground penetration can happen anywhere (no tent stakes, etc.), and the Park Rangers would like us to be gone by 4:00pm so they can finish their end of day and close the park at 4:30pm.

We have graciously been given the two RV/bus parking spots for the day. This will provide plenty of room for the portable antenna trailer (same as used at the fair and field day) and room for a smaller enclosed trailer and the canopy which to operate in/under. This is actually a great location because everyone coming in or out of the park will see us. We'll be setup for inclement weather so rain or shine we'll be on the air. Image showing location attached.

For the antenna we'll be running a G5RV-Jr at around 35' in an inverted V configuration. We have several radio's available but feel free to bring yours if you prefer! We have the following available at this time:
Icom IC-7200
Icom IC-706MKIIG
Yaesu FT-991

Winter Field Day 2019

Brad Arnold

IMG_0568.jpeg

Winter Field Day 2019 was a huge success! We had a large turnout and a lot of fun testing our equipment and setups. Using both portable antenna platforms we had a 40m dipole and VHF/UHF dual band omni on one and a 40m-10m G5RV Mini on the other, both at around 30’ high. Both antennas worked flawlessly through the entire event. Ray Young KM4YCO brought his Icom IC-7300 go-box out and operated on 20m most of the day while Brad Arnold K4NHA brought his Icom IC-7200 which was used on 40m. Richard Arnold KB4RMA setup a full VHF/UHF digital capable station using his go-box with multiple radios. We had over 900Ah of DC power available as this was the first chance to operate on the large DC power system KB4RMA and K4NHA have been building over the past several months.

The highlight of the day was when the kids got on the air. Danielle Fuller’s kids Deo and Alix made a contact with a contest station in South Carolina and Brad Ivey KK4UWF’s daughter Marley contacted the ARRL Headquarters W1AW in Connecticut for the second field day in a row. Rumor has it 7 year old Deo may be studying for his Technician License Exam soon!

With Winter Field Day in the books we’re now looking ahead to our next events which will be the K4R Special Event Station at Russell Cave National Monument in May and ARRL Field Day this June. Thank you to everyone that came out and made this Winter Field Day such a fun event and a great success!
