Date

February Club Meeting

Brad Arnold

Happy first day of February everyone! I’m pleased to announce that we’ll be having our first in-person meeting of the year for all who wish to attend. We’ll hold officer elections, discuss new meeting time slots for future months, revisit new dates for the antenna workshops that had to be cancelled, begin the early discussion and planning for Field Day, and more. As always the floor will be open to anyone in attendance after regular business is completed.

I’ll be testing a virtual meeting system to go along with our in-person meetings for those that can’t make it so look out for information on this closer to the meeting date.

We will be vigilant in maintaining distancing during the meeting and don’t forget to mask up! Also I hear the new menu is quite good so I hope to see as many of you there as possible!

No January Meeting

Brad Arnold

I apologize for the very late notice, somehow an email didn't make it out earlier in the week.

Due to covid we will not have a January meeting. I hate this but everyone's safety is more important. The plan is to resume meetings in February which will also be the officer elections.

Again I apologize for the email delay. Stay safe and hopefully we'll all get to meet and talk radio next month!

Brad, K4NHA

December Club Meeting Cancelled

Brad Arnold

I'm sure everyone has already heard about the quite large influx of COVID-19 cases here in Jackson County and surrounding areas in the past 30 days. Due to this fact I feel the safety and health of everyone in our organization is more important than holding a meeting this Saturday. I fear our January meeting and Winter Field Day will both also be cancelled as a preventative measure for safety.

I'm attaching a poll link that asks if you would attend a virtual meeting in January so please take a second to answer! https://forms.gle/oKqr7LU5HX2eoWkS6

Stay safe, stay healthy, and I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a great New Year!

Skywarn Recognition Day 2020

Richard Arnold

SRD 2020 starts today at 6 pm CST and runs for 24 hours.
This year is needless to say different from previous years in that we are all encouraged to follow social distancing guidelines and operate from our homes if possible.
The NWS office is still on lockdown so no operators will be staffing the NWS office nor will they be present at any of the EMA offices as well.
Everything is being handled remotely.
I have attached the PDF schedule sent to me by Douh Mathes, N4CZ.
Doug has requested any hams from Jackson County that can to try to check into the SRD nets between 8-8:30 Friday night and Saturday morning between 10-10:30am.
The schedule lists the various net times and repeaters to be used so get on the air and check in if you can.

"See" you on the air,
Richard.

Re: 2020 A Grinch Christmas Parade

Richard Arnold KB4RMA

Christmas Parade is still a go.
Weather looks to remain clear at this time but the high on Monday is only forecast to reach 47 with a low Monday night of 28.
This means that the temperature will probably start dropping quickly in the afternoon so dress warm.
As they are requesting that everyone wear a mask, bring a scarf, that will count.

Radio operator will be John Hilliard, K4JCH

Candy tossers will be:
Gloria Arnold
Richard Arnold, KB4RMA
Bytron Lauderdale, KN4QVD
Janet Lauderdale, KN4WZU Mel Barlett, KD4PID

We still have one seat on the trailer left open in case someone wants to claim it.
See you there.

Talk-in will be on the 90

The date has been set for the annual Scottsboro Christmas Parade.
It will be on Monday, December 7th and will begin at 6:00PM.
(Rain date will be Monday, December 14th at the same time.)

Line up will begin at 4:00PM at Collins Elementary school as in years past, we will be entry number 30 right behind the new EMA trailer.

Due to social distancing guidelines we will have to limit the club trailer to 1 single operator at the radio station in front and 6 members on the trailer throwing candy. (One seat has already been claimed by the Secretary's Wife so that means there are 5 left to claim)

The Clarion has put out some bad information saying that there will be no candy throwing this year but we have been informed by the Chamber that this is in error and you may bring and throw as much candy as you desire.

Five open seats so please reply as soon as possible to get your name on a seat.

If you don't want to ride, you can always find a good place to watch and take lots of good pictures.

As always, they are requesting everyone to wear your mask as well.

Greetings !

You are cordially invited to tour Jackson County’s newest response asset, The Jackson County EMA Communications/Command Trailer.

This trailer has been eighteen months in the making. Our late Director Felix Jackson saw an opportunity to obtain this trailer at no cost to Jackson County, Google and Google employees saw fit to provide funding for the complete retrofit and installation of equipment and technology, and our partners at the Jackson County Amateur Radio Club and Jackson County Community Emergency Response Team put in countless hours on their own time to build out the systems and make this a reality.

This trailer will not only be deployed to provide communications support in the case of a disaster, but may also be used to support large scale events, not only in Jackson County, but as a Mutual Aid asset to our EMA partners across Alabama.

Please make plans to join us on Thursday, November 12th 2020 at 12:00pm on the West side of the Jackson County Courthouse 102 East Laurel St. Scottsboro Al.

Exercise, Exercise, Exercise. Winter Storm Warning for November 6th!

Richard Arnold

Well, would you look at that NWS bulletin.  Winter Storm Advisory for late tonight/early tomorrow.

For those that have missed the last two ARES meetings the North Alabama Skywarn county SET exercise will start tomorrow morning around 8:00AM and run until no later than Noon.

Due to Covid19 I am not going to be calling for volunteers at the EOC due to the restrictions still in place. I will activate our local ARES Emergency Net around 8:00AM from the EOC and volunteers who want to join in on the exercise are encouraged to do so from your home location.

The winter snow and ice storm has caused widespread power and cellphone communication issues and most roads have been declared closed for all but emergency travel.

Let your imagination run wild as to likely scenarios in your local community and relay them into Net Control.

You may have neighbors that need emergency transport for dialysis, have run out of oxygen, need to borrow a standby generator, etc, etc, etc.

The whole idea is to show that we are prepared if needed to assist with transport and other issues and that we are ready to operate without normal power.

Check in tomorrow and have some fun using the tools we have at hand.

And remember. Every transmission during this training exercise should always start and end with "Exercise, Exercise, Exercise.

"See" you on the air in the morning!

I have 2500 feet of #14 THHN Brown wire (5, 500 foot spools) on a dispenser reel that will be available for antenna building so that solves that problem.

Our October Club Meeting will again be held at the public pavilion at Jackson County Park, 10:00am, Saturday October 10th. We’ll have a workshop after the meeting to build wire antennas for anyone that needs it. We’ll have an analyzer and plenty of soldering equipment on-site. Anyone needing to build an antenna will need to bring the parts as the wire donation that was offered to our club hasn’t been delivered yet.

Here’s a great post on inexpensively building the center insulator portion of a dipole antenna and I can say from experience that these work great! https://bit.ly/3ihuSrY

Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting and building some antennas!
