top posting

Hi,
Many, if not most sighted folk prefer bottom posting.
To them, it makes sense.
Sighted folk can simply look past all the past info and glance down to the
new information.
I think some Blind folk like to do this because they may feel that it
normalizes them to some degree because most sighted users do this.
I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a screenreader user who prefers
bottom-posting, because we are forced to reread the non-relevant information
at the top.
Usually when we read a message of a particular thread, we have been
following the thread and we just want to read the next reply and that is why
I call that non-relevant.
And if we come into a thread late, it is no big deal to arrow down to
discover what the above message was referring to.
I'm bringing this topic up because I have read some bottom-posted messages
on this list in the past and the moderators prefer that we top-post.
Glenn

Hi, there was a message however it was right near the bottom.

Larry was commenting on the cost for his jaws compared to the price quoted
for the other person.

Larry, the $90 offer is only available in US at the moment but they are
hoping to at some stage open it up to all countries.

Hope this helps.

Yes I agree. I always got annoyed when sighted people in groups would bottom-post and I had to scroll through. Fortunately I don't see as much as I once did but it can be really annoying trying to find the person's reply. Whenever I'd get an email saying "in a message dated" I knew exactly what was coming. I'm glad it's getting better now with most emails.

If only people would actually quote the message they are replying to.
So many posts of late say something like that is true; or I agree; but the rest of the thread is not quoted so you cannot be sure what they were talking about.
So, not only is top posting preferred by most screen reader users, but also allowing the previous thread to remain in case you are coming in late and are interested to know the context.
Any more, if the reply starts with the last message in a thread and it looks like they probably bottom posted, I just delete it and move on.
The same with messages with no context.

Hi.
Not that I'm looking to argue, but I've been on forums and e-mail lists of many different sorts since the mid-90s, and while bottom-posting might have been somewhat the norm in the early days, it's not nearly as common now, especially with regards to e-mail. While it's true that on any php forum the "quote" button will place the message you are replying to above yours, you can slip in and out of the "quotes" whenever you like. The reason, I think, it was originally done, and why some prefer it, is that you can quote specifically parts of the message this way and reply to them as needed. I think once it was realised (probably after the days when internet newsgroups were the most common form of internet "chatting) that most people do not really bother with this, it became more common to place the quoted message at the bottom.

I very much used to do this thing, and still do, on forums: replying to specific paragraphs of a message, and so I am used to this format and still kind of like it. Don't really think it has anything to do with "normalising", it's just a convenient way to respond to messages while covering all points.
However, in e-mail lists like the one we are using right now, yes, putting quoted messages at the bottom is preferred by me as well.

Alan...
I think it's forums, Internet newsgroups and the like where the posting method is often reversed from what you, and many (blind and sighted) prefer on e-mail lists.
The fact is though that many people are lazy about message quoting and so the advantages about placing parts of the quoted message first are rather lost.

And yes, in a work situation you would absolutely not want to waste time scrolling through a train of messages to get to the important latest one.

top posting as did the majority of my co-workers. I'm sort of scratching my

Hi,
Many, if not most sighted folk prefer bottom posting.

Glenn,

That is surprising to me that any list would not want top posting. I should realize at this point in my life not to make assumptions about anything nor to be surprised when behavior varies from what I expect. I try to continually remind myself that my opinion plus a dollar will buy me my choice at the Dollar Tree. Thanks for enlightening me.

Glenn,

I beg to differ with your statement that many if not most sighted folks prefer bottom posting. Back in my sighted work days, I certainly preferred top posting as did the majority of my co-workers. I'm sort of scratching my head wondering where you drew that conclusion since most want to get to a response as quickly as possible whether sighted or not and top posting yields the quickest response.

Hi,
Many, if not most sighted folk prefer bottom posting.
To them, it makes sense.
Sighted folk can simply look past all the past info and glance down to the new information.
I think some Blind folk like to do this because they may feel that it normalizes them to some degree because most sighted users do this.
I think anyone would be hard pressed to find a screenreader user who prefers bottom-posting, because we are forced to reread the non-relevant information at the top.
Usually when we read a message of a particular thread, we have been following the thread and we just want to read the next reply and that is why I call that non-relevant.
And if we come into a thread late, it is no big deal to arrow down to discover what the above message was referring to.
I'm bringing this topic up because I have read some bottom-posted messages on this list in the past and the moderators prefer that we top-post.

Larry was commenting on the cost for his jaws compared to the price quoted for the other person.

Larry, the $90 offer is only available in US at the moment but they are hoping to at some stage open it up to all countries.

Hi LeDon,
Top posting is like this message, where your reply is the first part of the
message and what you are replying to comes after that.
Bottom posting is mostly used by sighted folk, and done properly, if there
are multiple questions they are replying to, they will show the question
they are replying to first and their responses below each question asked.
Most replies have bullets in front of the original message, the eMail
program does this on reply.
But screenreader users usually dislike having to hear all the old
information before they get to the response.
If the original message is more than two or three lines, I escape out and
don't even read it, as I don't want to hear all that old information again.
HTH.

It refers to the location of your reply ina thread, either on an e-mail list like this one, a forum or internet newsgroup. If it's at the top of the message, iE, before a possibly-long series of quoted messages going backwards, then it's top-posted.

Again, I'd like to reiterate that I always saw the whole point of doing things the other way, or so called "bottom-posting", being so you can quote and reply to individual parts of a person's message, but it seems like since the 1990s, most people stopped bothering with this. I did kind of like this and so when I reply to facebook posts I will sometimes actually copy and paste parts of a comment or post and then reply to each bit with my own poitns or rebuttals.

That may be so, but I am not in the habit of searching for a reply which should be at the top of the message, and nor should anyone else!
Refer to the list guidelines for proper posting practices.

Hi, there was a message however it was right near the bottom.

Larry was commenting on the cost for his jaws compared to the price quoted for the other person.

Larry, the $90 offer is only available in US at the moment but they are hoping to at some stage open it up to all countries.

Hope this helps.

If you have something constructive to say, then say it, do not re-post what has already been said.

I hope that will be in the near future but so far no date has been

I have a friend who is running windows 7 with jaws 14 installed.
Currently jaws 14 is set to startup when the computer does.
I gave her my old cd of jaws 17 with a valid authorization.
She has got jaws 17 installed but not
authorized so she is still using 14 and 17 is sitting on her computer.
My question is how can she authorize 17. She gets like oh no I have
no speech what do I do!
Basically because she doesn’
