PDF and OCR
Cheryl Traub
Hi guys. I think there was a message about this, but must have missed it.
Anyway, when I get a document and it says empty document and I open OCR, it will say OCR component is not installed. Why does it say that? How do I get OCR to read PDF files? It must be a hard process.

I've had this issue in the past. Try running a repair. I am a bit rushed for time now, But perhaps Mark B or some other

Okay. Well, I had the same results for a while now. My property manager sends stuff in PDF, but it's a picture and I can't read the picture. I ask him to put it in word. Sometimes he does, but sometimes he doesn't. I can read PDF files okay if they're typed out, but it seems like people just want to take a picture of it and send the picture. I don't really feel comfortable doing technical stuff like this repair thing.

I posted this on the list last week, because I had the same question. Tec support told me that in order for this to work with Jaws, you have to select the PDF file, then do a applications key or press F10. Arrow down to Recognize with Jaws then press enter. Jaws will give you the "please wait" and your document will load up. Hope this helps. Best: James

Hi Cheryl,
Just a thought but, why don't you try
using the link below to download and install the latest J2019 version and maybe
updating Jaws in this fashion will fix the problems you're having. Using
the update option from within Jaws has caused many others problems and that's
why Freedom Scientific recommends updating by downloading the installer
executable file and installing it using the downloaded
installer.
Take care. Mike. Sennt from my iBarstool. Book: a utensil used to pass time while waiting for the computer repairman!

Hi Cheryl,
FS tech support has never given a
direct reason but, downloading the installer is what they recommend. Many
people on this list can attest to this as well as many people on this list can
attest to having to repair Jaws after using the updating feature you're
using. If you want to hear why call them and ask them. You're having
a problem so, what's going to hurt by trying something a little different.
When one thing doesn't work in other circumstances don't you try something
different? I'm not trying to be argumentative, just suggesting an
alternative. If you have Openbook installed you can use Openbook's Freedom
Import Printer to scan the file as well. To do it OB trythe
following.
1. Open the file in question and
press the print command, Control + P.
2. When the print dialogue opens
navigate to the, Freedom Import Printer, option and press enter.
3. Give OB a little time to OCR the
file and OB will come up talking and processing the file, then you can save it
in your format of the choices given.

I often just hit the applications key and down
arrow to open with and select Open Book.
If it is not in the list of available programs, you
can navigate to it, the executable in Program Files is obu.EXE.
Or you could arrow to the file, press shift +
applications, and press the letter A, and then open Open Book, do control + O,
do the paste command and press enter.
I don't know why, I've just never used the Freedom
import printer.

Downloading and updating using the updater depends heavily on an internet connection, and if that happens to drop during the installation, parts of the jaws update can be lost. You’re right, it’s annoying, but you’ll get your issue solved if you just follow the advice here and update using the installation file Mike has provided.
