Speaking Delay Problem With New Windows 10 Computer

Tom Behler

Hello, everyone.

As some of you may remember, I’m continuing to set up a new Dell Windows 10 computer with Jaws.

The computer has an Intel I7 processor, 16 gigabytes of ram, a 12h gigabyte solid-state drive, and a 1 terabyte mechanical hard drive.

I mention this right from the start, because this computer should have plenty of horse power to work well with Jaws.

I have noticed that, when typing something, after I stop using the computer for 30 seconds or so, I do not get Jaws feedback until I press at least four or five keys.  In other words, there’s a considerable delay until Jaws starts speaking again.

I am thinking this is a Jaws issue, but am not totally sure.

I’m currently using Jaws 2018, and plan to upgrade to Jaws 2019 soon, although I’m a bit hesitant to do so right now because of other known problems with Jaws 2019 and MS Word.

Are there some settings I should look at to try to address this issue?

Thanks as always!

Dr.  Tom Behler from Michigan

Have you checked the display settings in the Windows settings?

There is the time out settings for the screen and display, the sleep settings for the computer as a whole, and possibly the computer is being delayed by parking the hard drive during the time you’re not working on it.  This used to be called the time out settings for the hard disk drive, so you may want to check on those settings and see what happens.

I’ve checked the display settings and the sleep settings, and they don’t appear to be the issue.

Not sure how to check the hard drive park item.

Subject: [jaws-users] Speaking Delay Problem With New Windows 10 Computer

Hello, everyone.

As some of you may remember, I'm continuing to set up a new Dell Windows 10
computer with Jaws.

The computer has an Intel I7 processor, 16 gigabytes of ram, a 12h gigabyte
solid-state drive, and a 1 terabyte mechanical hard drive.

I mention this right from the start, because this computer should have
plenty of horse power to work well with Jaws.

I have noticed that, when typing something, after I stop using the computer
for 30 seconds or so, I do not get Jaws feedback until I press at least four
or five keys In other words, there's a considerable delay until Jaws starts
speaking again.

I am thinking this is a Jaws issue, but am not totally sure.

I'm currently using Jaws 2018, and plan to upgrade to Jaws 2019 soon,
although I'm a bit hesitant to do so right now because of other known
problems with Jaws 2019 and MS Word.

Are there some settings I should look at to try to address this issue?

Thanks as always!

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

Tom, Might as well upgrade, because you can't get to 20 without 19.

Have you tried a restart?

Jorge,
There is no better symbol for the purpose we serve than the emblem every
Marine earns: the Eagle, Globe and Anchor. The eagle represents the proud
nation we defend. It stands at the ready with our coastlines in sight and
the entire world within reach of its outstretched wings. The globe
represents our worldwide presence. The anchor points both to the Marine
Corps' naval heritage and its ability to access any coastline in the world.
Together, the eagle, globe and anchor symbolize our commitment to defend our
nation-in the air, on land and at sea.

Thanks for the additional info on Silenzio, and I'm planning to install it
if I can't resolve the issue any other way.

It's good to know that Jonathan Mosen recommends it.

Tom,

Also, if you have not tried installing Silenzio, which was mentioned by
someone else previously, it would definitely be worth a try. I have
installed it and it has resolved my issue which sounded very similar to the
issue you described.

Here is the link to the article on Jonathan Mosen's site where he describes
the problem and mentions this program as a work-around:

Check your sound card settings. I had to change my setting to the basic one
instead of Realtime. Hope I got that name right. Be aware that sometimes
updates will undo this setting.

I've already checked the general sleep settings and the display settings,

It's a very small app, and installation couldn't have been easier. I chose the option to have it run at startup when I reboot my PC, and I am very happy with the results.

Good luck,
Pam
