Re: outlook link in e-mail and the run command.

Adrian Spratt

Justin,

I think messages need to be in HTML format for the links to work. If that isn't the cause of the problem, try moving one character inside the link and then pressing enter. That solved a similar problem I had a few years ago.

Regarding your other issues, I hope people with more tech knowledge will have something to offer. However, I'll mention that my windows 10 search function stopped working properly a few days ago after I did some tinkering on my PC, but it seems to have settled down with time and a few reboots. Maybe your run window will return to normal after a while.

When I click on the link to open it in the outlook message , it won't open.

Is there any reason why?
Also, My run command does not work anymore.
When I go to the run, and type in the internet address, I can't get it to go anywhere.
It happened after I did a system restore to get my pc to run faster.
I've sense downloaded c cleaner and ran it.
Still the same problems.
I also keep getting an internet e-mail pop up that is asking for the password. This just started.
Any help is greatly appreciated?

Hi Adrian.

I have Adobe Acrobat Pro on this machine. It’s an old version (prior to a lot of the accessibility improvements in DC, in fact), but one thing it does have is its own oCR function.

It has the unfortunate habit of completely locking up my pC while it’s processing, but I know for a fact it can work with big files, since I OCR’d an entire textbook and several books about film using this method.

Let me be clear: I’m not trying to start a political discussion!

I’ve searched the Web for a version of the Mueller Report that’s easy for JAWS to read. On more than one website, the entire text is copied, but each of the 440+ pages has a lot of heading text that’s very distracting. I’ve also downloaded the PDF file of the report. JAWS says it’s an “empty document,” and so I initiate Convenient OCR. However, it can’t get past page 182 without getting hung. I’ve tried three times.

So, two questions. First, has anyone here found a readable version of the report?

Second, more broadly, has anyone found a solution when a PDF file is apparently too big for JAWS Convenient OCR to process?

Thanks, Dave. Yes, this experience made me realize I need to install my OCR program on this new computer.

I just now manage to download a completely accessible version of the report from the NY Times, which I’d tried before without success. I don’t know if they updated the option or I just didn’t get it right. I hope it’s the whole report. At over 1,000 pages, as it appears in Word, I hope so. The original 448 pages was going to be hard enough.

Adrian,

Do you have Openbook, or another OCR program? That may be necessary to process such a large PDF file.

In the other version that shows constant headings, have you tried to save it as a plain text file?

PDF conversion software, recommendations?

I used to have Omega to perform OCR, but a Google search indicates it’s no longer as highly rated as it used to be. I’ve just experimented with a free PDF converter, but it can’t convert PDF images to text. Sometimes, PDF files contain lots of text captured as images, so that one is no good.

I see no need for OpenBook. A commercial application ought to be good enough, so long as it works well with JAWS.

I haven’t figured out how to make the .PDF version readable with JAWS. Back in the day, NLS made the 9-11 Commission Report available, so I would imagine they will do the same for Mueller’s.

Good luck.

Subject: [jaws-users] activating jaws

I have a friend who is running windows 7 with
jaws 14 installed. Currently jaws 14 is set to startup when the computer
does.
I gave her my old cd of jaws 17 with a valid authorization.
She has got jaws 17 installed but not
authorized so she is still using 14 and 17 is sitting on her computer.
My question is how can she authorize 17. She
gets like oh no I have no speech what do I do!
Basically because she doesn’

Wow! Here in Canada it cost me more than $600.00 to go from JAWS 14 to 2019.

I agree. This seemed a harsh rebuke from a thoughtful moderation team. I started this thread with a post about a JAWS' convenient OCR limitations and a careful disclaimer that the subject wasn't meant to initiate a political discussion. Everyone who responded was equally careful to omit political commentary. Richard Turner offered what could be a helpful workaround for this JAWS failing. Surely a one-time post that does have an indirect JAWS relevance deserves some latitude.
Or was the criticism, which is ambiguous, of the entire thread? If so, I'm not sure how the thread violated list rules.
More guidance would be appreciated.

Rick,

I thought the original inquiry had to do with JAWS Convenient OCR not being able to handle the entire report?

Adrian,

Do you have Openbook, or another OCR program? That may be necessary to

In the other version that shows constant headings, have you tried to save it

Let me be clear: I'm not trying to start a political discussion!
I've searched the Web for a version of the Mueller Report that's easy for
JAWS to read. On more than one website, the entire text is copied, but each
of the 440+ pages has a lot of heading text that's very distracting. I've
also downloaded the PDF file of the report. JAWS says it's an "empty
document," and so I initiate Convenient OCR. However, it can't get past page
182 without getting hung. I've tried three times.

So, two questions. First, has anyone here found a readable version of the
report?
Second, more broadly, has anyone found a solution when a PDF file is
apparently too big for JAWS Convenient OCR to process?

Yes, that is true, but the post I replied to had nothing to do with Jaws.
