Hi Tom,
If you're using the search box on the Start menu, you often get better results if you search for a specific category of results.

One way of limiting  a search to a category is by typing the category followed by a colon followed by your search terms. For example, if you are looking for a document which is either named fred or contains the word fred, you can type doc:fred. You can use the following words to specify the category which is searched: app, doc, folder, music, photo, setting, video, and web. Where appropriate you can also use the plural form of these words, so for example, you could search using either app:fred or apps:fred. You can also use document rather than doc, if you really want to type the extra letters.

Use alt-f7 instead of f7.  This is a Microsoft command.

It’s much more screen-reader friendly.  You can just arrow up and down through the list of misspelled words without tabbing anywhere.  If you want to confirm the spelling of the suggested word, press the JAWS command for reading the current word, insert-numpad 5, or capslock-k on a laptop twice quickly to spell the current word.

When you find the word you need, or ignore, or ignore all, press enter to confirm your choice.  It does not automatically move to the next word.  You have to press alt-f7 for each spellcheck.  If it finds nothing, it says so.

When I press the insert-numpad 8 I hear “read original sentence” and it reads the original sentence.

I can arrow to the dictionary choices. This is very tedious and not expected behavior. This is a clugey work-around at best.

Can you get the misspelled word verbalized by pressing JAWS key+numpad 8?

As for the alternatives list, try tabbing once to land in it and then going through the list with the down arrow.

This works for me in Outlook 2016. Word can function a little differently.

Hi. I had this problem on my previous computer, but not 100% of the time. Now it’s 100%  (or maybe 99.999%) reproducible.

I go into Outlook or Word and generate an e-mail or document. I spellcheck – either by pressing F7 or by sending and having Outlook auto-spellcheck. The first error and suggested correction works fine. When I press a key combo (change, ignore, add, etc) the programs go to the next error, but JAWS does not  read them. It stops and says nothing. If I right-arrow I can hear the error letter by letter, but not the change suggestions.

I’m using latest JAWS, Windows-10 and Office 2019. This is a major issue and seems to clearly be a JAWS interaction issue.

How can I fix this?

Hi Alan,

What you need to do is export your Quicken accounts as separate export files. I only use Quicken for my checking and savings, so if you go into the export submenu of Quicken, it will give you the option of exporting checking, savings or all. You cannot select all. Instead, you select checking and then savings or the other way around. This will give you two QIF files and you import them separately to Money Talks.

For some reason it didn't let me name them on the import and the name I chose for each one didn't show up. That may be only because I'm using the demo.

Hope This makes sense.

Robin and All,

I've been a long-time user of Quicken as well but admit that Money Talks sounds promising after reading through its user's manual at this link:

https://tech.aph.org/mt_info.htm

I got a bit confused when I read that Money Talks only imports qif or csv files for one account at a time whereas Quicken will let you export multiple account data. I'm not sure if this means that Money Talks requires you to keep separate files for your checking account, credit card, savings account, investment accounts, etc. whereas Quicken keeps all of these accounts in the same file. I guess I'll learn more about this if I continue exploring but if anyone using Money Talks can comment, I would appreciate it.

You may need to explore a file fomr Quicken and then import it to MoneyTalks.

It is old software, but I've heard it still works in Windows 10 and I believe you can download a free trial version.

It should be able to import the data file from your export or backup from Quicken.

I'm lazy, and let my wife handle Quicken since it does not work at all well with Jaws and we do not need QuickBooks.

There's a newsletter called Truthout and toward the end of each article,
there's a kind of insert where the reader is told that he or she can receive
a daily summary by filling out the following form. There's then a place for
one's email address and , if I remember correctly, a sign up button. Before
my calamitous move to Jaws 2019, I was able to just arrow through that form
quickly and resume reading the rest of the article which continues
underneath it. Now, I can't do that any longer. I'm stuck there. I can't go
back above it and use insert 2 to just read everything. I can't get to the
bottom of the article and arrow up. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Another issue, Jaws is set at intermediate verbosity, where it was before. I
often copy articles and post them on the Blind Democracy list. I have a
routine way of doing that. I've copied the article into the message. I then
go to the top of the message where the title is, copy the title, and shift
tab once to the subject line where I paste the title. I can still do that.
However, Jaws is not saying shift tab as it did before. It says nothing when
I press those 2 keys in that situation.

Another thing it has stopped doing, it doesn't tell me that I'm in the
original message after I've replied to a message. I can find out, but it
almost never tells me that automatically.

Perhaps this is all just a punishment for still having a Windows 7 computer?

Hi Miriam,

It sounds like your, Forms Mode, is set to turn on automatically when you come to an edit field.  I don't know what setting you prefer, but if you only want the Forms Mode to open when you want it to, let the list know and someone can provide steps.  Or, steps can be provided to transfer your settings from your previous version into this newer Jaws version, if possible depending on which Jaws version you were running previously and if it's still installed.  Transferring your settings would probably be your best option, if possible.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go dodgers!

Hi, catching up on old messages here. I also am going to take note of these instructions because I think this is what is happening at work. The other day we received a newsletter in PDF and I opened it and got nothing. I tried OCR and I got the message that it couldn’t start because it wasn’t in acrobat reader. I double checked and it was in acrobat so I couldn’t work out what was going on. In the end I forwarded it to my home email and when I got home I opened it and read it with no issues. After reading these messages I think the problem at work was it was running in protected view but wasn’t telling me this. So on Thursday if I get the chance I will have a look into these settings and see if it is the problem. The only other difference between the two computers is that I am running Jaws 2018 and work is running Jaws 2019. I am able to upgrade to 2019 but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.

Thanks all.

Adobe did something that Broke JAWS, as Vispero tech support said, but it’s easily fixed.

Open Adobe, either from the icon on your desktop, or from the start menu.

Press control-k.

Press s till you hear

Security enhanced.

There is a checkbox that says,

Enable protected mode at startup.  It’s checked.  Press the spacebar to uncheck it.

If you get a warning message, that’s okay.  You need to change this to make it work.

Tab to OK.

Tab to OK again.

Now it works as it should.

Hi,

I have Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on my new windows-10 computer using the latest version of JAWS. My memory is that, when we tested Adobe a couple of months ago I was able to open and read a .pdf document.

Now, when I open a .pdf document using Adobe Acrobat Reader DC, the keyboard seems to be disabled and JAWS does not read the document. I’m unable to arrow around the screen using my keyboard. Interestingly, my friend, who helped me set up the computer, is able to maneuver around the screen using Quick Assist (he’s remoted into my computer) and is able to see documents on the screen.

This behavior is not document specific and is making it impossible for me to read important (to me) .pdf documents.

Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.

John

Ps If there is an alternative  program to Adobe that will let me successfully read and convert pdf documents to Word, I’d love to hear about it.

Thanks.

Go to:

Go to the tips and tricks page, then go to the heading for e-mail clients.
The first item below that heading is Windows Mail.
Press enter on that link, and you should be able to find what you are
looking for.

Re: jaws stops reading article because of an edit field

I had it set to turn the forms mode on automatically before, but this never happened before. Also, the person who was supposed to be helping me and who had to leave, told me it was best to remove the previous version because with Jaws 2019, I didn’t need the previous versions. I wasn’t comfortable with that, but I assumed, at that point, that he knew more than I did.

Go dodgers!

Try pressing the PC cursor twice quickly.

There's a newsletter called Truthout and toward the end of each article, there's a kind of insert where the reader is told that he or she can receive a daily summary by filling out the following form. There's then a place for one's email address and , if I remember correctly, a sign up button. Before my calamitous move to Jaws 2019, I was able to just arrow through that form quickly and resume reading the rest of the article which continues underneath it. Now, I can't do that any longer. I'm stuck there. I can't go back above it and use insert 2 to just read everything. I can't get to the bottom of the article and arrow up. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Another issue, Jaws is set at intermediate verbosity, where it was before. I often copy articles and post them on the Blind Democracy list. I have a routine way of doing that. I've copied the article into the message. I then go to the top of the message where the title is, copy the title, and shift tab once to the subject line where I paste the title. I can still do that.
However, Jaws is not saying shift tab as it did before. It says nothing when I press those 2 keys in that situation.

Another thing it has stopped doing, it doesn't tell me that I'm in the original message after I've replied to a message. I can find out, but it almost never tells me that automatically.

Perhaps this is all just a punishment for still having a Windows 7 computer?

Miriam

Last week FS presented a webinar on using Excel with JAWS.

Go to the JAWS main screen, insert+j.
press 'r (resources).
Press 'w' (webinars).
Wander down the page to the June 6 webinar on Excel and have at it.

Good luck!

You skipped one step. After starting the Jaws main screen, you have to go to Help.
