Re: turning off Space and paragraph markers in MS Word 2013

Sherri,

Try pressing ctrl + shift + 8 to toggle off the display paragraph marks setting. Hopefully this will also take care of the spaces being displayed. I'm not sure which versions of Word this works with but it worked for me with Word 2010.

Somehow, I have inadvertently turned on announcement for space and paragraph markers in my Word documents.  How do I turn off that feature?  Any help would be appreciated, as this is very annoying.

I am using the latest version of JAWS with Windows 10. I have been using a very old version of Quicken on my Windows 7 that works well with the latest JAWS but I'm guessing it won't work well with Windows 10.

Can anyone recommend a program that will work for tracking checking and savings accounts? I'm hoping to get something that will allow me to transfer over my current information, although I realize that will probably have to be an updated Quicken. I was told it doesn't work well with JAWS or Windows 10.

Thanks.

I thought I solved my problem. Well, I did, sort of. Jaws is no longer
echoing words in Outlook or in word. However, it still occasionally says a
random word which starts with a letter that it seems to arbitrarily choose.
For example, I re-read the word, "occasionally", just now to check my
spelling, and Jaws then chose the letter I and said a word starting with
that letter . I've now used the insert 2 method in addition to the more
comprehensive insert 6 method, and I'm hoping that Jaws will stop providing
me with these random words.

JAWS is indicating the phonetic pronunciation of the letter when you
move to it and pause. You can adjust these settings in: Insert+6 for
configuration manager, Text Processing, General, Phonetic Announcement.

My brother purchased Quicken for 2019 back around January and or February.

We’ve tried to contact Quicken both via e-mail and phone calls, with no success.
I’ve even talked with the head quarters of the NFB and ACB and still no luck.
This is a huge shame because up until around 2015, it was a beautiful little program.

Hi Miriam,

Here's a little more to add to what Chris has said:

It's called phonetic announcement and here's how to turn it off:
1. Open the Settings Center with, Insert + 6, on the number row then press, control, shift + D, to open default all applications.
2. Arrow down to, Text Processing closed, right arrow to open, down arrow to, General closed, right arrow to open, down arrow to, Phonetic Announcement,
and rightarrow to open.
3. With Phonetic Announcement open you have 2 choices:
A. Down arrow 1 time to, Spell phonetically always, this is a checkbox.  To turn it on press the spacebar to check this box.
B. Down arrow again  to, When pausing after character navigation, and this option has 4 choices that you toggle through using the spacebar.  To turn off
use the first choice from below.
* Speak character phonetically never.
* After one half second.
* After 1 second.
* After 1 and one half seconds.
4. After making your selection tab to, Okay, and press enter to save and close.

I believe it is JAWS 2019 you installed. To turn off Phonetic announcements,

1. Press JAWS key plus six on the numbers row, just above the letter Y.
2. Press CONTROL plus SHIFT plus D to load the default JAWS configuration.
3. Type the following letters with no spaces between them:

p h o

4. Arrow down through the search results looking for the words

When pausing after character navigation, speak character phonetically

5. Tap the space bar until you hear the word Never.
6. TAB to the OK button, and press ENTER.

Now, as you arrow through a document and pause, you will no longer hear the phonetic announcements.

Re: needing a checking program

Vicki W

Hi Alan,
What you need to do is export your Quicken accounts as separate export files. I only use Quicken for my checking and savings, so if you go into the export submenu of Quicken, it will give you the option of exporting checking, savings or all. You cannot select all. Instead, you select checking and then savings or the other way around. This will give you two QIF files and you import them separately to Money Talks.

For some reason it didn't let me name them on the import and the name I chose for each one didn't show up. That may be only because I'm using the demo.

Hope This makes sense.

Robin and All,

I've been a long-time user of Quicken as well but admit that Money Talks sounds promising after reading through its user's manual at this link:

https://tech.aph.org/mt_info.htm

I got a bit confused when I read that Money Talks only imports qif or csv files for one account at a time whereas Quicken will let you export multiple account data. I'm not sure if this means that Money Talks requires you to keep separate files for your checking account, credit card, savings account, investment accounts, etc. whereas Quicken keeps all of these accounts in the same file. I guess I'll learn more about this if I continue exploring but if anyone using Money Talks can comment, I would appreciate it.

I was a long time Quicken user.  I have downloaded the demo of MoneyTalks from APH.  Others on the list have used it and it seems like it has the features I need.  Havent’ tried it yet, but I think it will be a good replacement for Quicken.  I do believe that it will take the Quicken files so that you can transfer over data. You may need to explore a file fomr Quicken and then import it to MoneyTalks.

you may want to explore Money Talks from APH.ORG

It is old software, but I've heard it still works in Windows 10 and I believe you can download a free trial version.

It should be able to import the data file from your export or backup from Quicken.

I'm lazy, and let my wife handle Quicken since it does not work at all well with Jaws and we do not need QuickBooks.

Can anyone recommend a program that will work for tracking checking and savings accounts? I'm hoping to get something that will allow me to transfer over my current information, although I realize that will probably have to be an updated Quicken. I was told it doesn't work well with JAWS or Windows 10.

Thanks.

Hi Alan,
What you need to do is export your Quicken accounts as separate export files.

Excel Assistance

George Gray

Hola!

I used Excel some 10 years plus ago when it was easy; without ribbons.

I find that I need to creat a couple of sheets for investing purposes
and have no idea how to properly do so with the ribbons, etc.

If some kind person would be willing to take my telephone number and
call me and hopefully answer a miriad of questions I would appreciate
it.

You may contact me at my email address; blindtraveler2@..., and
I will give you my number.

Thanks in advance.
