Re: automatic updates; previously It wasn't like you think it is

Tina Kurys

I have always installed updates either from the prompt given on booting computer or by going to the help tab on the ribbon of JAWS window. Hadn't ever had a problem until last evening, when the install for the most recent update just quit, at 96% complete. Luckily, my sighted, tech-savy husband was right there. He cancelled the install, uninstalled JAWS 2019, as directed, and downloaded and installed it afresh. I don't think I could have done that by myself. So, I plan to go back and read the entire thread on the topic to find out how to do it more safely in future.

checked in Adobe. That's why it didn't work with OCR. I had protected mode
checked. It wasn't because I did the automatic update. I asked about the

Here is an accessible, easy-to-use site.

Press e to get to the edit box to type in your location. When the page
loads,

press 2 for heading 2 to get to your current conditions. Press 2 again
twice, or till it says detailed forecast, for a 7-day forecast. Save the
page to your favorites, or send it to your desktop. You'll not have to put
in your location again, so just press 2 to get to current weather, as
described above. The link below just uses NYC as an example.

like doing the updates in the updates. My friend could scan the thing okay

Hi Cheryl,

Consider this for a moment. Depending on your download speed it only takes
a few seconds to download the installer and it's yours, but when you try
downloading / installing it through the updating feature it can take a
minute or 2, maybe more. On another note this could be one of those files
that just can't be recognized or OCR'd. If you would like, you could email
this file to me and I can try scanning it to see if it's the file or your
version of Jaws, then you'll know if you need to call FS to have them fix
your problem or not.

Take care. Mike. Sennt from my iBarstool.

Hi Cheryl,

FS tech support has never given a direct reason but, downloading the
installer is what they recommend. Many people on this list can attest to
this as well as many people on this list can attest to having to repair Jaws
after using the updating feature you're using. If you want to hear why call
them and ask them. You're having a problem so, what's going to hurt by
trying something a little different. When one thing doesn't work in other
circumstances don't you try something different? I'm not trying to be
argumentative, just suggesting an alternative. If you have Openbook
installed you can use Openbook's Freedom Import Printer to scan the file as
well. To do it OB trythe following.
1. Open the file in question and press the print command, Control + P.
2. When the print dialogue opens navigate to the, Freedom Import Printer,
option and press enter.
3. Give OB a little time to OCR the file and OB will come up talking and
processing the file, then you can save it in your format of the choices
given.

Google Slides Study in New York City area

Good morning everyone,

Hopefully this is not inappropriate for the list. There is a user study being conducted in Manhattan later this week on Google Slides regarding accessibility. This is a paid study which pays $175 plus transportation costs to the location. They are still in need of 1 screen reader tester and 3 low vision testers. Please feel free to spread this around to anyone you might know. The candidates should be familiar with how to use Google Slides. If interested or know of someone who might be interested please have them email me at  jdinero@...

Thanks

3. Give OB a little time to OCR the file and OB will come up talking and
processing the file, then you can save it in your format of the choices
given.

Take care. Mike. Sennt from my iBarstool.

Hi Cheryl,

Just a thought but, why don't you try using the link below to download and
install the latest J2019 version and maybe updating Jaws in this fashion
will fix the problems you're having. Using the update option from within
Jaws has caused many others problems and that's why Freedom Scientific
recommends updating by downloading the installer executable file and
installing it using the downloaded installer.

not working. It won't work. If only people would either send stuff in Word

Downloading and updating using the updater depends heavily on an internet connection, and if that happens to drop during the installation, parts of the jaws update can be lost. You’re right, it’s annoying, but you’ll get your issue solved if you just follow the advice here and update using the installation file Mike has provided.

I often just hit the applications key and down arrow to open with and select Open Book.
If it is not in the list of available programs, you can navigate to it, the executable in Program Files is obu.EXE.
Or you could arrow to the file, press shift + applications, and press the letter A, and then open Open Book, do control + O, do the paste command and press enter.
I don't know why, I've just never used the Freedom import printer.
