Hi,
Here's Eric's message about the Chrome update.

All,

In the March update of JAWS, there were changes made to prepare for the
release of Chrome build 74 and higher. If you have Chrome installed, and
go to the about box, you should get that update installed now. Here is
what was posted in the release notes and I think a great reason to move
to
Chrome if you have not already.
Improvements With Selecting and Copying Content in Chrome
After working closely with developers at Google, we are pleased to
announce that starting with Chrome version 74.0.3717, an update scheduled
for release by April 2019, selecting and copying text using the keyboard
will now include the HTML markup as we have done in Internet Explorer for
years. The functionality is included for all users of JAWS and Fusion
2019, providing the ability to copy live links, lists of items, and even
tables from the Chrome browser and pasting them into Email messages or
Documents without losing the formatting.
Regards,
Eric

*** The next JAWS monthly update should be out by the end of April.

LeDon,

Looked up on the FS web site and here is what it says about the Invisible Cursor:

6.4 Invisible Cursor

The Invisible cursor was created for the sole purpose of accessing information on the screen. You have probably not used the Invisible cursor during your
daily use of JAWS. The Invisible cursor is identical to the JAWS cursor. You can move it anywhere on the screen, but you cannot perform any mouse actions
such as a left mouse click.

You use the same navigation keystrokes as you do when other cursors are active. You can activate the Invisible cursor from your keyboard by pressing NUM
PAD MINUS twice in succession. When you only need to read information on the screen, then the Invisible cursor is the best cursor to use.

I think we just have to play with all three cursors sometimes to see what will work.  I’ve been on web pages where nothing will activate a “clickable” and where nothing can see the “play” button the website says is there on the top left of the screen.

And the print button on the Southwest Airlines webpage certainly did not work either.

When I scan a file or folder with Eset, the JAWS cursor will read the results, as will insert b.

I played with the touch cursor just now.  When I press control-home with the touch coursor activated, JAWS says Eset Antivirus Window.  But I could not read the contents of the window.

Thank you for this Becca.

The only question I have then is if the touch cursor will see things the Jaws cursor won’t.

For example, when you get a dialog box where Jaws just lands on the button and so you have to perform an insert+B command to read the entire dialog box, so, to avoid doing this, I’ll try the Jaws cursor to simply move up a line or two instead of having to listen to a whole bunch of text.  In this instance, the Jaws cursor will simply say blank, no matter where you go.  Will the touch cursor read this types of things instead of the Jaws cursor.

I would think this a very useful cursor to use in place of the Jaws cursor, but again, Jaws has to be able to see this stuff, and if it’s only as good as the Jaws cursor, then it isn’t much use, save for apps such as the ones listed.

Subject: [jaws-users] Touch Cursor Information

I’ve had this stored for a while, and can’t remember now if this came from the Help Menu or from the Vispero website.  It mentions Windows 8, but I think the information is still relevant for Windows 10.

Object Navigation Using the Touch Cursor

Certain applications, especially many of the modern-style apps found in Windows 8, do not always work as expected with JAWS when navigating with the standard cursors such as the PC and Virtual PC cursors. Activating the new Touch Cursor enables you to use the

ARROW

keys on your computer's keyboard, or the controls on your braille display, to navigate through the actual objects in an application similar to using gestures on the touch screen of a tablet. Application objects include everything from menu bars, toolbars, and progress bars, to form controls, regions, links, etc. Press

SHIFT+NUM PAD PLUS

, or

SHIFT+CAPS LOCK+SEMICOLON

if using the laptop keyboard layout, to activate the Touch Cursor. To turn it off, activate one of the other cursors, like the JAWS or PC Cursor. Pressing the PC Cursor command (

NUM PAD PLUS

) will cause JAWS to say "Touch Cursor" and the Touch Cursor will remain active. If Tutor Messages are enabled, JAWS will also speak the message "Double tap to activate PC cursor". Press the PC Cursor command twice quickly to turn off the Touch Cursor and activate the PC Cursor.

The Touch Cursor is enabled by default in certain Windows 8 applications to improve navigation. These apps include News, Weather, and Store. Whenever you move focus to one of these apps, the Touch Cursor is automatically activated. To automatically enable the Touch Cursor in another application, press

INSERT+V

to open Quick Settings while focused in the application where you want to use the Touch Cursor, expand the Touch Cursor Options group, and then select Automatic Activation. You must do this for every application where you want to have JAWS automatically turn on the Touch Cursor.

Once the Touch Cursor is active, pressing

RIGHT

or

LEFT ARROW

will move to the next or previous object on the screen. This is the same as doing a left or right flick on a touch screen. Pressing

UP

or

DOWN ARROW

will move to the previous or next object by type. By default, these commands will move by region, or group if you are on the Windows 8 Start screen. This is the same as doing an up or down flick on a touch screen. To change what object type these commands move by, press

PAGE UP

or

PAGE DOWN

to cycle through the available types. For example, if you want the

UP

or

DOWN ARROW

keys to move by headings, press

PAGE UP

or

PAGE DOWN

until you hear "headings". Now, pressing

UP

or

DOWN ARROW

will move to the next or previous heading.

Press

CTRL+HOME

to move to the first object and press

CTRL+END

to move to the last object. To announce the current object, press

INSERT+UP ARROW

. To perform a Say All, which will cause the Touch Cursor to move through the application and speak each object, press

INSERT+DOWN ARROW

.

As you navigate using the

ARROW

keys, the system focus does not follow the Touch Cursor. This allows you to freely navigate objects without changing the position of the PC Cursor or mouse pointer. Pressing

SPACEBAR

or

ENTER

on the current element will move focus to that element and perform the appropriate action similar to double tapping on a touch screen. For instance, opening a menu, selecting a check box, or activating a button or link. In addition, a rectangle will be displayed around the currently selected object to visually indicate the location of the Touch cursor for sighted users.

If the Touch Cursor is on an object containing text, such as the body of a news article, you can press

INSERT+ENTER

or

NUM PAD SLASH

to enable Text Review. In this mode, you can use the

ARROW

keys as well as all other standard reading commands to read the text as if you were reading a regular document. Pressing the

ESC

key will exit Text Review and return to Touch Cursor navigation.

A good example of using the Touch Cursor is in the News app, where it is enabled by default. Once the app launches, you could press

DOWN ARROW

to move to the /Top Stories region and then press

RIGHT ARROW

to move to a particular story. When you find the article you want to read, you can press

INSERT+ENTER

or

NUM PAD SLASH

to switch to Text Review so you can use the

ARROW

keys or the braille display to read the article. Once you are finished, press

ESC

to close Text Review and then use

RIGHT

or

LEFT ARROW

to select another article from the current region, or

UP

or

DOWN ARROW

to move to a different region.

Touch Cursor Navigation Quick Keys

While the Touch Cursor is active, you can use Navigation Quick Keys to quickly jump to various types of objects, such as regions, headings, links, form controls, and so on. These commands are similar to the Navigation Quick Keys that are used when navigating HTML and PDF documents with the Virtual PC Cursor

By default, Touch Navigation Quick Keys are not enabled when the Touch Cursor is activated. This allows you to fully use applications that support typing in the main window. For example, the News app lets you type so you can quickly locate specific stories.

If you would like Touch Navigation Quick keys to be enabled automatically when the Touch Cursor is activated in a specific application, press

INSERT+V

to open Quick Settings while focused in the application, navigate to the Touch Cursor Options group, and select Touch Quick Keys. You can also press

INSERT+Z

while the Touch Cursor is active to temporarily toggle Touch Navigation Quick Keys on or off.

Advanced Object Navigation

For advanced users, specifically those who may be involved with developing applications, Advanced Navigation provides more detail about all objects in the UIA (User Interface Automation) structure.

With the standard Touch Cursor, you can only navigate objects that are visible on the screen in the current application. In Advanced Navigation, the Touch Cursor traverses all UIA objects in a hierarchical manner. All Objects, whether visible or not, can be traversed in Advanced Navigation.

To enable Advanced Navigation, press

NUM PAD STAR

, or

CAPS LOCK+A

if using the laptop keyboard layout, while the Touch Cursor is active. Once active, use the

LEFT

and

RIGHT ARROW

keys to move to the previous or next sibling object and the

UP

and

DOWN ARROW

keys to move to the parent object or the first child object. To view more Advanced Navigation commands, press

INSERT+H

while this mode is active. Press

NUM  PAD STAR once more to turn off Advanced Navigation and return to the standard Touch Cursor.

Getting Goldwave to announce peaks in db value instead of percentage

JM Casey

Hi everyone.

I’m posting this to a JAWS list because, although I’m not absolutely certain, I believe that the function I’m asking about is a function of JAWS scripts.

I’m using Goldwave v6.35 and the version of the scripts that’s supposed to work for versions 5 and 6. Not sure of the specific script version number because it doesn’t actually seem to say anywhere?

Anyway, in the control window, you are supposed to be able to read the peak values of your audio as it’s playing or if you stop at a specific point. I am getting a percentage value for both channels. It’s all right, but I would like jAWS to announce the decibel values instead. I thought that pressing “d” was supposed to do this, or at least that’s what I read somewhere, but it’s doing nothing for me. I looked in the keyboard commands list and even in the manula just in case I was missing something, but cannot seem to find a reference. How can I switch this so that it tell me the peak values in decibels instead of as a percentage?

Any help would be appreciated! It’s annoying the heck out of me that I can’t seem to figure this one out.

Stascom, New and Final Version Released

Mike B <mb69mach1@...>

Hi All,

You can read more about the program using the link below.  Supported operating systems and download instructions are below the URL.

A new and final version of Stascom has been released, version 2019.4.
Operating system support

Stascom will run on Windows 7 and 10, both 32 and 64 bit architectures. As support for Windows 7 will be discontinued in January 2020, Windows 10 is recommended
from a security perspective.

Downloading and installing the program

Should you read this after downloading and installing Stascom 2019.4, feel free to skip to the next heading.

The following caveats apply to downloading and installing the program.

list of 5 items
• There is no need to remove an older version of the program before installing version 2019.4. The setup program will close the previous version and replace
it with the latest update.
• Depending on the local security policy on the user's system, Windows 7 and 10 may report that the origin of the file, "Stascom_setup.exe," is unknown.
This is normal for any program that does not have a signed certificate. As Stascom is a free program and not sponsored by any means, it does not warrent
the expense of such a certificate.
• When using Internet Explorer browser to download the setup program, Smart Screen Filter may inform the user that the program has not been signed by the
developer. Refer to the explanation above.
• When receiving these warning messages, simply instruct Windows to continue with the download or installation. The same holds true for the second part
of the installation where initialisation is done for first run of the program.
• Users might be greeted with silence from their screen readers in these scenarios when another message from Windows is presented. Pressing tab or shift+tab
will echo the following message from Windows:
Windows protected your PC. Windows SmartScreen prevented an unrecognized app from starting. Running this app might put your PC at risk. More info. Don’t
run.
This is normal for any program that does not have a signed certificate. Enter on "more info" and then on "run anyway." Stascom has been tested extensively
on various systems, so the user may continue with confidence at this point.

Weather Research it

Holly

I am using Windows 7 and JAWS 2019. I haven't been able to get my weather research it to work. When I put in my zip code, or any other zip,it just says 'no weather information available'. Anyone else use this feature and had any problem with it?

Thanks for any help
Holly

Yes, it's broken, been that way for a while.
You'll have to use the web, or an app of some kind.

FS is aware that the weather research it is broken. There has been quite a bit of conversation on this or the other JAWS list and someone found a site that was good, which I don't recall. But, for now, don't bother trying to use Research It for weather.
You will need to go to a weather site with your web browser.

Thanks Richard:

I saw a few posts about weather apps, but didn’t see any subject lines with the research it feature in it, so probably didn’t open the emails.

Thanks.  Will wait for a fix.

Hi Holly,
It was a topic a while back, like a month or so, about the weather as well
as other parts of research it not working.
I thought it was on this list.
I think FS is letting it die.

I don't know about whether they are letting it die but I surely would not be
surprised to learn it isn't a priority. Nor should it be, imo. Must be a
real pain in the a*** to maintain, and when all information is easily
obtainable from other sources, I guess they ought to be spending time and
effort concentrating on making sure JAWS is up to speed with doing what it
is supposed to do, namely, functioning as a screen-reader.
I do use the dictionary lookup and currency conversion because they are
admittedly very convenient. The former, at least, shouldn't be changed too
much with the passing of time. Still expecting it might stop working one of
these days though.

Holly,
From the gist of the conversations on this list about the problems with researchit, I gathered that there will be no fix for the utility.

Re: Weather Research it

Was that confirmed by anybody?

Even if not, it makes sense to wean oneself away from it, I think. They could make a fix next week; it could be broken again by next month.

I thought someone said that Erick from FS said something like that.
I did not pay a lot of attention much because I don't use it.

The sight is the National Weather Service. You can find it easily with a Google search. All you need to do is type in a zip code. This probably wouldn't work for other countries.
