MS Word 13 and symbols

JERRY MARTIN

Afternoon all.

Using JAWS 2018 and Windows 10 on a Dell laptop, I know that there is a keyboard command of jawskey then the 4 above the alpha keys to bring up an extensive list of symbols. Can anyone direct me to a place where I might be able to download more symbols than what are available? Thanks.

Thanks for the tip, Shaz.

I’m still planning to call Freedom Scientific about this to get their thoughts, because, apparently, it is a known issue.

Hi, I have seen this happen myself. This was on the work computer, so I am going off memory. To read the list, when you first go to it you get the name of the first one but no more. If you arrow down once, then press tab and then shift tab it will then read you the second one in the list. You have to do the same for every entry in the list. This can be quite painful if you have a long list but so far that is the only way I have found to read the list.

Sorry can’t help you with the other issue.

Hello, everyone.

In light of the problems I am having with regard to effectively navigating and editing an e-mail group, I got some assistance, and have now created the group I need.

However, in creating the group, the group accidentally got saved to the wrong Outlook contacts folder.

Does anyone know how to move an e-mail group from one contacts folder to another?

I have tried the standard copy and paste method, but have been unsuccessful thus far.

Any help would be appreciated.

On a related note, I’m going to call Freedom Scientific and possibly the Microsoft Accessibility Hotline about the ongoing problem with navigating e-mail group lists with Jaws, and will let the list  know if I find out anything of major importance.

Once again, for the record, I’m using Windows 10, Outlook 2016, and the latest build of Jaws 2019 here.

Thanks, all!

Re: chrome extentions

Mike B <mb69mach1@...>

Hi Sandy & LeDon,

This might be a little more of an explanation than y'all wanted but, it's below the URL where I got it.

What are extensions?

Extensions are small software programs that   customize the browsing experience.   They enable users to tailor Chrome functionality and   behavior to
individual needs or preferences.   They are built on web technologies   such as HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

 An extension must fulfill a
single purpose
that is narrowly defined   and easy to understand.   A single extension can include multiple components   and a range of functionality,   as long as everything
contributes towards a common purpose.

User interfaces should be minimal and have intent.   They can range from a simple icon,   such as the
Google Mail Checker extension
 shown on the right,   to
overriding
 an entire page.

Extension files are zipped into a single .crx package   that the user downloads and installs.   This means extensions do not depend on content from the
web,   unlike ordinary web apps.

 Extensions are distributed through the
 Chrome Developer Dashboard
 and published to the
Chrome Web Store.
  For more information, see the
 store developer documentation.

Take care.  Mike.  Sent from my iBarstool.  Go Dodgers!

Mike,

First, thanks to you for that link to the archived list messages.  Might I suggest that would be a nice link to put into the footer of the group's messages.

The old instructions I posted were six years ago and involved using the Amazon MP3 downloader.  It also worked with Jaws, but in that message I also addressed a quirk with Window-Eyes, because I did quite a bit of AT training then.

If you don't have the Amazon Mp3 Downloader,
Go to this link and find the install link
http://www.amazon.com/gp/dmusic/help/amd-bm.html?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0

Last time I used Amazon Music downloader, some time in July, it was still working. I can look again, but here is a help message I posted a few months ago.

Your downloads will go into the folder specified in the Amazon Downloader program. So, you need to look at the program, usually the default location is my music\amazon mp3\ArtistName, where ArtistName is the artist of the album you ordered. If you ordered a single, I'm not sure if it follows that
convention or if it puts your single in the various artist folder.

Here's a small help file I did for someone else a couple months ago. The refreshing issue only occurred with Win-Eyes, so you probably can disregard the last part of the message.

Blank
Ok, this appears to work with Win-Eyes 7.5. I tried alternatively using Jaws 13.1, but I had problems with it focusing on the correct link with my IE8 and Windows xp. But, Jaws 12 works well with the Amazon downloader though. I didn't try System Access, but I expect it would work well too.
To download an Amazon mp3 album:

Find the mp3 album you want. A page will appear with the track listings.

Click the one-click checkout which is located above the first heading.

A table will open which will confirm that you want to order the album.

Click the continue link.

Another page will open with a bunch of typical Amazon links including a table. In the table, you will see a reference to opening the album in the cloud player. Right below that is a download link. Click on that. You may have a warning that comes up from your browser, simply confirm you want to download the file.

I just had to update to the latest version of the Amazon Downloader, so I then got a message that I had to authorize my computer; I think this was in reference to the cloud player, but I did it. You should only need to do this
once.

If you didn't have to authorize, you probably got a double-beep pop-up warning that asks if you want to automatically download the album to the Amazon player on your computer. Up near the top of the screen, there will be a yes button, a no button, and a checkbox that you can check if you don't want that message again. I just clicked on the Yes button.

As the album is downloading, if you go to the Amazon music downloader program by alt-tabbing, you should hear a progress bar. It will go up to 100% for each track, so you will hear it cycle through several times to complete all the album tracks.

Now, after Karen clicked the download button, she had no response. Here is what we found out using WinEyes:
Blank
In case anybody else had the same issue Karen did, here is the solution.

When you get the beep from IE when you click the Get MP3 link, hit alt-n for the info bar. It will say IE blocked this download. Hit the application key and allow the download.

Now, in Window-Eyes 7.5.4 on the XP machine, it shows a blank screen. Do a screen refresh in Win-eyes insert-backslash. Now, if you go back to the table and click the get mp3 link again, you will get the do you want to save or run the file dialog. Click on save and it should download into your amazon downloader directory, which should be in your my music directory. That is the default area for downloaded purchased music from Amazon.

Re: Outlook 365 editing emails

Adrian Spratt

Graham,

When you open a message, it is a static document. You aren’t supposed to be able to edit it. However, there are at least three ways that you can set up a message to be edited.

You can press control-r as if you were going to reply or control-f as if you were going to forward the message. At this point, the entire message can be edited. I think it’s safer to set up as a forwarded email in case you accidentally reply to the sender. In that case, to make absolutely sure, I enter my email address in the “To” line.

The third option is to copy the message to a word processing file. But then you’d have to create a new email if you want that content in email form.

Re: OCR and jaws

Adrian Spratt

What you’re looking for is a secondary layer, which you access with JAWS key+spacebar. If you want to perform OCR on a document, after pressing that key combination, press d.

There are a series of OCR layered commands. To read through the list, press JAWS key+spacebar, then j, to access the list of all secondary layer commands. Type ocr in the search field that comes up. Then tab once, then arrow down through the numerous results.

ADMIN: List Guidelines Reminder

Rick Justice <ricjustice@...>

About JAWS-Users-List
English (USA)

Hello and welcome to the JAWS Users list. This list has been created for The
purpose of discussing all aspects of the JAWS for Windows screen reader
Program.
So everything that pertains to JAWS in regards to working with a software
package online web page or program is fair game. For example asking about
what
software packages work well with JAWS or how to make them work better with
scripts, keyboard short cuts and so forth. Another example might be asking
for
help with the Bank of America web page, or a post asking if there is a
software package that does a specific task and works well with JAWS.

No newsletters of any type pertaining to an online event, software package
or hardware device should ever be posted to the list prior to receiving
moderator
approval.

Everybody should familiarize themselves with the content contained in the
footer message that accompanies every message posted to the list.

Now this is a very important point in my opinion, asking the list for exact
instructions every time is not a good thing to do for a major reason. It
creates
a dependency situation even if you don't realize it does. The ideal place I
am hoping the list will arrive at some day is that everybody no matter how
new they might happen to be with JAWS or computers will have the confidence
to try things on their own, and yet feel if they get stuck the list will be
there to help put them back on track.

Trust me when I say that help is quicker to arrive for somebody who is well
known to ask for it last than first.

So try it yourself first whatever it is. If you get stuck then let the list
know what you've done to try and resolve your current dilemma. Then I'm sure
help will arrive with in short order.

The rules of conduct are quite simple and straightforward. Be polite and
Patient with others. There will be absolutely no fighting, and no bashing of
Freedom
Scientific on here at all. If you have a problem with them then take it up
with Freedom Scientific directly. Please try to keep subject lines relevant
and descriptive as possible. Signatures and tag lines should not be more
than a couple of sentences, three or four at the most. If you wish to
include
a tag line, don't make another message of it. Placing anything else in there
simply increases the bandwidth required to handle the posted message and
make
it more work for a person who wishes to follow the given thread back to
review previous messages, as they have to plow down past an overly long
signature.
Also please place your message above your signature line so as not to force
people to read it before they get to your message. Attachments are removed
before any message is sent to the list. This is done for your protection.

When contacting any of the list moderators privately please be descriptive
in the subject line as to the purpose of the message. Also, if you have a
question
for the list that falls within the guidelines, then post it accordingly.
Don't contact the management team with questions that are more appropriate
for
the list itself. Your question may or may not receive an answer for a number
of reasons.

Occasionally there might be some difficulty with your email address and you
may receive an email from the server asking you to reactivate your account.
Please do not simply delete this message. Instead open it and follow the
directions to reactivate your account. If you do not after receiving a

not make it all right. Posting to a single address IE this list is the
preferred
acceptable practice as we do not allow cross posting. That is simply posting
to more than one list or address in the same message. You can post the same
message to multiple list, but not at the same time.

Now to the matter of replying to a posted message. The proper practice is to
simply hit the reply command in your respective email client, IE control +
R is used quite often in many programs.

The SUBJECT: field should be short and to the point without including any
member names. Also please do not reply to a posted question simply to say
you
don't know the answer. All that does is create more traffic on an already
very busy list for no reason at all. Lastly please no jokes, virus warnings,
recipes, safety tips, or pleas to help dying kids, should ever be forwarded
to the list.

Forwarded messages and attachments are not permitted. If you have an article
or message you feel relates to the Nature of this list send it to the list
owner and if it is appropriate, it will be posted to the list. Additionally
if you want to make an announcement about another list send it to the list
owner for consideration. Do not post it to the list before obtaining
approval.

No auto responders are to be used on this list! Those who use auto
responders for vacations and so forth must make sure that this list is not
included.
Any person who sends an auto response message will be removed!

My hope is that this list will always be a place where everybody no matter
what their particular skill level can feel safe to ask any question at all
within
the guidelines that I have set forth. It is my experience that such rules of
conduct are important to keep good people on the list.
