Hi all.

When in a PDF document and I go through the process of activating the
convenient OCR I just get the message "OCR failed to start".

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you,

Adam.

Extracting Individual Application Scripts

Hicks Steven (CORNWALL IT SERVICES)

Hi friends,

There seems to be a problem with my Microsoft Outlook scripts and when I open them and compile, they come up with an error and I have no idea what it is.

Is there a way that I can re-extract the default scripts and overwrite the problem ones?

Tom,

Since that post, my Outlook problems are much the same as before, which is to say basically manageable. I wouldn’t hold back from installing the update. Barring news of catastrophe, it’s best to keep up to date.

Just a couple ofthings that I have noticed with JAWS 2019 January and Microsoft Outlook 2016.

I Am running Microsoft Windows 10 1809.

Sometimes, when I use ctrl+r to reply to a message, I seem to get a blank line to try my reply but when I start typing, I get messages like no next heading as if it is trying to read a html web page.

Is is not all the time and with all messages.

Also, I am unable to shift+tab back to the message subject field with JAWS if I want to read the subject that way, is anyone else finding this?

Re: learning spanish

Shelly Kane <shellykane323@...>

I have been learning Spanish for the past few months by using the website duolingo.com and you can either get the app for your smart phone or use the computer.  I use the computer because it's much easier.  You can also go at your own pace.  When you go on there, set up an account and you can pick five minutes a day up to 50 minutes per day.  I do it for five minutes a day so I can remember things.  I would never do the more advanced in the beginning. When you go on the website, there is a list of courses and you pick Spanish.  After you set up your account, you will get an email with your daily Spanish reminder and right from the email, you click begin challenge.  If you have any further questions, let me know.  Best of luck to you.

Re: learning spanish

Leonard:

I think you will find two of my websites useful if you want to learn Spanish; also, we have an email list with low traffic since it does not allow themes other than those directly related to our podcasts or radio programs, but there you can establish relationships that will help you attain your goal.

First, there is https://EIberoAmerica.com a podcast site, totally accessible since it was created and is maintained by me, who am totally blind. You can navigate it easily with Jaws using mostly headings. It contains:

1. "Entrevistas" or interviews, international in scope, any subject.
2. "Tutoariales" or tutorials, geared for the blind, on Windows, Apple, Smart Phones and other adaptive tech.
3. "Música" or music, remembering long ago composers and performers.
4. "Viajes" or travel, relates virtual visits and legends of many different places.
5. "Poesía" or poems, poems and small bios of poets from different countries.
6. "Libros" or books, interviews with writers, whether they have published one or many books.

You can easily navigate the result page of each of these podcasts, by first pressing 2 until you hear the title of the podcast, then pressing 4 to go from title to title, followed by down-arrow when a title interests you, to find the descriptions and links to listen online or download each.

The second site is http://radiogeneral.com which is an internet radio station with varied programs, movies with audio description, ceded to us by ONCE, the National Organization for the Blind of Spain, many cultural programs including languages, you could learn French orEnglish, which is taught by one of our volunteers, a blind man from Philadelphia; there is also humor, including some O.T.R. programs from Cuba, Mexico, Spain and other countries, too many others to list here but the complete list of programs, with date and time of each, is available at the home page.

The mailing list is with Google groups, you may subscribe by sending a blank message to:

Radgen+subscribe@...

When you receive the email confirmation message, simply reply to it without changing anything.

These websites will not only let you practice your hearing, getting accustomed not only to Spanish, but also to the different accents of Spanish-speaking people from many countries, much as would happen in English with people from different regions of this country, Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, etc.

Most of the interviews however, are carried out by Paqui, a retired lawyer and teacher from Madrid Spain, and I, born and raised in Havana, resident of Florida since 1960.

Hope the above provides entertainment as well as some cultural advancement to you and others, please share with as many people as you all like.

Kind regards,

Humberto

Using jaws 2018 on a Dell laptop with Windows 10, I had a screen come up that said, “We have an update for you”. I used the jaws cursor to try to find out more information on it i.e. where it came from, etc. But it would not say anything except blank. Has anyone ever come across such a thing, and if so, what are the recommendations. I pressed the not right now button, and it went away. Thanks much.

your right. this dialog has never talked. it just says zero in the list. i have to use narrator or n v d a to read this dialog.
what good is it if jaws won't read it?
when there is a update it will list the version update and a checkbox you check then tab to ok or is it install. then the update will download.
you have to unload all screen readers and wait until the installation starts. then the setup will self talk from that point on.

Problems within Google Chrome and Jaws

James Malone

Hi all, this might be a little off topic being it has more to do with Google Chrome then Jaws, but I have a client that has Jaws 2018 on her machine using the latest version of Google Chrome on a win 10 laptop.

When she goes to Amazon, and does a search for something like Dogfood she will add something to her shopping cart, then Google Chrome will kick her out. We uninstalled Chrome, reinstalled it, and also had the disability help desk assist her.

She still has the same problem, and doesn’t have this problem within Internet explorer.

Anyone have any suggestions on what to do here, and has anyone experienced this issue as well? If so, what if anything did you do to fix the problem?

Thanks.

Best: James

Regarding your inability to type in some replies, turn the virtual cursor off with JAWS key+z. this is a problem that several of us have reported for several releases. As you say, it happens inconsistently.

Regarding shift-tabbing back into the subject line, in my experience I’ll get there, but I need to shift-tab two or more times. Irritating.
