Hello Mr.Ed, you forgot to say that you have to be in an open email body. This will not work when an email is highlighted and the alt key must be held down because if you mash it and release it you will be in the ribbons.

Hello, everyone.
I used to be able to read the various fields in an open Outlook 2016 e-mail message using the alt key, followed by the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc..
This now no longer works.
Whenever I hit these key combinations, I get an “unavailable” message.
Does anyone know if something has changed to no longer make this possible, and is there a work-around?
I also find shif-tabbing through the various fields to be very unreliable.
I’m using Windows 10, Office 365, and the latest build of Jaws 2019 here.
Thank you!

Portable Version of JAWS, How To
Mike B. <mike9902@...>
Hi Teri,
I found this information buried in my notes and hope the steps still work: The following briefly describes how to first download and install the thumb drive application, second, download the video intercept driver, and third, start the thumb drive application on another
computer.
Application Download and Install
1. Plug your USB thumb drive into your computer's USB port.
2. Select the appropriate thumb drive download link (32-bit or
64-bit) that appears at the end of this procedure.
3. When the dialog box opens, choose Save, and select a
location on your thumb drive where you can easily find the downloaded executable
file.
4. Run the downloaded executable file and extract the files to
your thumb drive.
5. Repeat steps 2 through 4 if you are installing both
products.
Video Intercept Download
1. Select the appropriate video intercept link (32-bit or
64-bit) that appears at the end of this procedure.
2. When the dialog box opens, choose Save and save the file to
the root of your thumb drive. (If needed, this file will let you install the
video intercept
driver on any computer that does not already have it
installed.)
JAWS/MAGic 32-bit Video Intercept (32.8 MB - FTP
download)
JAWS/MAGic 32-bit Video Intercept (32.8 MB - HTTP
download)
JAWS/MAGic 64-bit Video Intercept (34.4 MB - FTP
download)
JAWS/MAGic 64-bit Video Intercept (34.4 MB - HTTP
download)
Start Thumb Drive Application
1. Unplug the USB thumb drive and plug it into a different
computer. Windows automatically displays a dialog box asking what action you
want to take next.
Select "Start JAWS" or "Start MAGic" and then press
ENTER.
If this dialog does not appear, press WINDOWS Key+R, type
"X:\JAWS100" or "X:\MAGic110" (where X is the drive letter assigned to your
thumb drive) and
press ENTER.
Note: If the video intercept has not been installed on the
computer, choose the Cancel button when the Autorun dialog box displays. Next,
press WINDOWS
Key+R, type "X:\FSVideoIntercept.exe" where X is the drive
letter assigned to your thumb drive), and press ENTER. This installs the
necessary JAWS and
MAGic video components on the computer. You must have
administrative privileges to install these files.
2. You can now use JAWS or MAGic just as if it were installed
on the computer's hard disk drive. Any settings changes that you make are saved
on the USB
thumb drive so that you can use them next time. When you are
finished working on the computer, quit JAWS or MAGic and remove the drive from
the USB slot.
Take care, Mike.

Hello Linda,
I am using Excel 2016 & Jaws 2019. I would have thought Excel 365 would work the same as Excel 2016 but can’t say that for sure. I have no problems using F2 to edit a cell. To insert a column, I hit alt I then C. This inserts a column to the left of the column I am in. To insert a row above the row I am in I hit alt I then R.
Hope this will work for you. Sherry Wells

Yes, this always works too. Smile. As long as I can remember what the

command to route JAWS to PC is! Insert-minus. Not remembering, I'd switched to the JAWS cursor, pressed control-home to go to the top of the page, and arrowed down. This works too, but for some reason, not all the time. Then I have to remember to turn the PC cursor back on again. I think I only have trouble with this because Window-Eyes had the mouse available all the time without having to switch back and forth. Old habits die hard. Smile. But as usual, we're given many ways to do the same thing.

Insert F2 works for me onJAWS 2019 latest gbuild, Win10 and Office 365/Excel 2016. But I recall that earlier versions of JAWS may not edit cells well. JAWS 18 came out in November 2016 and even with its updates it may not do the trick for you in Office 365.
I hope someone else has a better answer for you.
The workaround is to copy the cell to notepad or to a Word file

I’m also finding some inconsistency. However, you can pretty much rely on reaching each of those fields by holding down the alt key and pressing the number twice quickly, e.g., alt and 2-2. These are the keystrokes for not just reading, but actually landing in, the field you want. Not ideal, but they enable you to move around a message pretty fast.

When you press alt-enter to bring up properties, all you need do then is to press insert-b for JAWS to read the dialogue box. Just sit back and listen. If you don’t want to hear all the extra stuff, as soon as you press insert-b, virtualize the window with insert-alt-w. Now you can arrow through the text with your up and down arrow keys, or left and right arrows or any of the other combinations we use for reading by letter, word or line. You can also copy and paste.
